Very interesting article....
Somewhere in the future are small turbofans for the hobby.
I saw the X 48 recently and it had AMT turbine logos... maybe testing was done with those engines as well.
At the time I didn't know what the large nacelles were for.

Very interesting research. It would be interesting to see them try for some sort of "pusher" (aft fan) arrangement where exhaust flows straight through the turboshaft PT wheel and into the free exhaust. A lot of their challenges seemed to do with the drag on the exhaust structure and compressor inlet air issues. But, I suppose, since that's not how JC and Wren are making the TP gearboxes (the aft fan idea) then that's not gonna be how an off the shelf solution is found.

I'd love to hear what that setup sounded like.

Then there was this guy back in 2010 that was trying the traditional bypass fan approach...

I also met Gary quite a while back on an old project. Nice guy. It seems moving to Dryden fit him very well!

Originally the X48 had 3 x P200's fitted as per the works on the fan version, after this they went to 2 x AMT Titan's to see how two engines would fair as a big part of the project is involved around reducing sound - theory was two bigger turbines would be quieter than three smaller ones.

Not old news.. The Wren version doesn't put out 45 pounds of thrust, now does it?

Very interesting and informative stuff, thanks for sharing. I am a little surprised that they used their engine reverse mounted and lost the trust of the turbine, I guess they were only evaluating the fan.

I searched the PDF and it was published in 2009. I guess nothing new has happened.
