Hmmm. I asked an IMAC competitor this last weekend the same question and he said they are forbidden. I love the technology, but I don't compete. This is like allowing steroids in bodybuilding… LOL

I'm devastated to hear the Beaufighter went down. I saw it fly in 2013, I believe the first year it competed, and it was incredible to see in person.
This year was great though. Machinchy flying the 12' F-104, I think another one of Wigley's planes, was a treat. They had lg issues with that one, but I don't think it suffered too much damage.

There is no advantage if everyone is allowed to use them. It's only a disadvantage if you are allowed and don't use them. The choice is yours. It is simply silly not to use them when everyone else does. And there is no way a person can fly better in competition without them in windy weather. For years I didn't use them either. But as I got more into competition where my competitors were allowed to use them it made no sense what so ever to not use them.

This is the same for the Jet World Masters.

Funny, I just put this pic up on my Facebook page....I should have come in last using your logic. I know it is an uphill battle I am facing but call me a purist.

by the way, I am not trying to start a pi$$ing match and mean no disrespect. I know (and accept) the rules and play by them as I see fit. Regarding gyro issues we should probably head to a new thread if we want to carry on....this thread is for pictures! ;-P

lol, I'm not either. To each his own. It's kinda a confusing message though saying that they are a "hugely unfair advantage" especially if one thinks they can fly better (ie the "it can be done" proverb) in competition without them. Moreover, even if you agreed that they do improve someones flight scores how is it an advantage when they are available to all to use if they want?

I keep thinking of switching to the dark side and adding one to my plane but I have to say, I really enjoy "flying" my aeroplanes. I enjoy kicking in a little rudder and having to coordinate my banks.......Maybe I will just plug one in for TG next year....NAH! ;-)

Correct me if im wrong, but only Rate gyro's are allowed, No? If so, does that disqualify gyros such as the demon cortex, As3x technology, etc?

ALL gyros are allowed up to and including gps enabled i-gyros.

Most guys had Demon Cortexes or Powerbox I-gyros......

Everyone flies in rate mode anyway... The GPS on the Igyro is for adjusting gyro gain according to airspeed. These things don't fly your plane for you!! The gyros I have tried to use in heading hold mode don't fly the maneuvers the way an airplane should and I don't use it anyway and stay in rate mode.

Top gun is all about placing the maneuver and flying it correctly. The gyro does not do that for you. What it does do is help take the wind out so your aircraft flies more scale. Those of us in scale after all are trying to make our aircraft look as scale as possible. That goes out the window when you plane is bouncing all over the place in the wind.

For me I love using them because it makes flying much more enjoyable. Even if I was not competing I would still use them. It would be like trying to drive your car without power steering. Can you... Well yes but it sucks.

Jeff Foley finished second in Masters by half a point does not use any sort of the 3axis gyros. He does have a rudder gyro that gets turned off when the gear goes up. I was with him this year and he is quite proud that he did so well without the aid of a 3 axis gyro, and he flew a small plane by TopGun standards. His tiny 86", 28 pound Me109 handled the wind quite well. Of course his flying skills had a lot to do with that too!I wish I would have taken more pics to share, but I was just having fun walking around and I hate carrying a camera around.

Ok I hear you man 3x Gyro is the way the wind blowing these days. I bought my first 3 axis two week ago and been testing it on a 100cc extra 300 before putting it into my Jet but yesterday I almost lost the extra because of some unexplained flight control problem. On inspection I found the green and red led flashing on and off each time I throttle the engine. Seems like a bad solder joint oh well I won't give up on my first 3axis gyro attempt

Guys use a gyro............in the end if you can't fly your crosswind landings will suck and you will not score well.

As someone stated earlier, gyros will not fly the plane for you, may not even help you in landings. You have to know what you are doing. If you cant see yourself benefiting from use of gyros, perhaps your flying has not matured enough to realize you need one.

No gyro here, never will be. I am old fashion and have no intention of trying one out.

I sure did have a fantastic weekend of flying and walked away feeling that I had flown about as good as I could have. I have always felt that it's a personal contest against myself so when the dust settled I was really happy with my final score.

David, I guess my flying has not matured enough yet, maybe in another 40 years

Not talking about gyros, but something that always impressed me from top gun and in general in U.S institutions is:

When something good shows up, regardless of who made it or from what country comes, it is given its deserved merit.

The guys saw this plane flying, and gave a thropy to it,,simple as that. To me this atitude is everything,, congrats to the organizers and all participants of this event and also thanks for everybody that uploaded pics and videos for us who couldnt go there!

Or...you're flying is very "mature" and you know that a gyro would be an asset, BUT, you choose to fly the plane without one for personal reasons.

Some David Hart shots of the F6F my son flew at Top Gun. He didn't pace but we sure had fun with the Warbird Alley bunch.

Fact: of the 600 or so flights flown at Top Gun 2015, only one (Peter Goldsmith, F-104) had a higher single average flight score than my non-gyro heavy wing loading taildraggin' warbird in a crosswind. Tell me it can't be done ;-P........Sorry, couldn't resist. All of these naysayers saying that your scores will suck in a crosswind if you do not have a gyro. If someone wants to start a gyro thread, I am on it :-)
