Congrats Doc!

I agree, I wish prop RPM was available. I plan on "adding" it to mine soon using an Futaba sensor.

Congrats DocYates. Plane looks great and glad to hear the KT turboprop performed well for you.

Doc,

I forgot to ask which prop and what RPMs were you seeing on the ground?

I just went back through this thread in researching my 2-blade options and see the SEPs are highly "loaded" compare to other props of similar size. That has me rethinking all the props. If the SEPs are an anomaly compared to others, the all the data we have been collecting using the SEPs is skewed badly.

I have a Seidel 27/14/3 that I wasn't even considering trying, but now I think it would be wise to try it, but still would like to try a 2-blade.

My prop is the three bladed Biela prop which they make for this engine. Did not have an accurate rpm senor on the ground, so am not sure what I am getting, but the prop is pretty large and has a 20 pitch I believe.

Hi Doc,

Where did you get the prop? I'd be willing to try one and take some ground rpm readings.

I ordered them from Biella importer here in the states. I think they were around $150-160 each.. I have another one, as a back up, which I could send to you to try, but it will have to be after Top Gun, since I need to have a back up prop in case something were to happen.

Hi Doc, Sounds good. If you're taking the Air Tractor to Top Gun, you may be able to find someone there that can get ground rpm's. If not, we can talk when you get back.

I just ordered the Biela 5 blade 23x14 prop. I'll be testing that one in the next coming weeks.

Kirk,

Try Gerhard at Aircraft International. He was able to get in a few of the Beila 24x22 three-blade props specifically designed for the turbo prop engine. If I remember correctly, the last time I ran my K-60 tp (October) with the Beila 24x22 prop, it reach 4750 rpms on the ground. Not sure of the accuracy of the tach, but just thought I would share my info. My plane has not yet been flown with the Beila prop, but hope to get it back in the air soon.

By the way, Brett (Chief Aircraft) did his maiden flight using the Beila 23x14 at Kentucky Jets last year. I don't believe he was very happy with the preformance of that prop. I did let him use the five-blade 24x23.5 five-blade prop that is sold by Skymaster. According him, the performance of his PC-21 was much better with the Skymaster prop.

Hi David,

Thanks for the info. Glad to hear you'll be getting the PC-21 back in the air. I'll be out of town next but when I get back I plan to start changing the PC-21 over to the Jeti radio setup. Then I'll be ready to test a couple of props against what I was getting with the Solo prop 22x22 three bladder. I'll post the findings.

Advise needed
Put a Biela 26x14 three blade prop on my new kingteck 60 had to take rpm back to 152,000 on ground as the prop was doing 5000 rpm on ground.
Beila make a 26x16 turbo prop any one have any thoughts on this as a smaller prop on my 1/3 scale pc21 would look strange to say the least.

I ran the Beila 23x14 5 bladder and saw 5600 rpms on the ground and it was pulling pretty hard. When I fly it I'll try and video.

Planning to try an SEP 24x18 three-blade prop tomorrow. Tried a Biela 24x22 three -blade the other day, and at full throttle (159000 rpms shown on ECU) prop didn't seemed to povide much thrust. Also the tach indicated prop was spinning at only 2300 rpms. There has got to be a problem with the tach.

T6racer, Vogelsang has an SEP 26x18 three-blade prop you might consider.

Here's some video of the Biela 5 blade 23x14 prop.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a53XGr-kHDE After putting the gear down and backing off on the throttle I noticed the rpms had not changed and the plane wasn't slowing down so I didn't deploy the flaps. On the go around the turbine flamed out. After getting the plane back to the pits, it was noticed that the mpx plug at the turbine was partially unplugged. We figured is once the mpx plug has disconnected, the turbine kept the last known good rpm until it flamed out. No damage to the plane but two blades on the prop broke. I put a new prop on the plane and spun the prop by hand it felt good so I started the turbine. During startup the prop never started spinning so the turbine was shut down and it is on its way to Kingtech.

Kirk,
Did you run out of fuel, or did the engine just flame out? Also was the performance of the plane much improved with the five-blade Biela prop?

I still had half a tank of fuel after belly landing. At some point during the flight the gray mpx plug had disconnected from the turbine. That plug handles the starter motor, solenoids, and burner.

As far as performance goes, it was a little faster and had better vertical than with the 3 blade 22x22 prop I used last year. The 5 bladder did take a little longer to spool up and at 23x14 the Biela 5 bladded prop doesn't have asmuch pitch as the Skymaster 5 bladded prop, which is at 24x24.5. so there's probably less heat generated in the gearbox.

I just picked up a Kingtech TP after my Jetcat gearbox died. I also have owned a Wren TP

Question is, for the Wren, you are supposed to use three mounts - both sides and bottom - for the Jetcat only the side mounts - can't figure out for the KT which method to follow?

Finally got a Beila 26x16 three blade prop for my Kngteck TP60
Wound the turbine back up to 16000 rpm just on 5000 on the ground.
Best it's ever gone.
Here it is at a recent meet in Canberra it's the the one after the biplane.

Currently using an SEP 24x18 three-blade prop. On the ground spinning the prop 5050 rpms. My PC-21 had good speed (if Spectrum GPS is accurate, speed 130mph)and performance with the K-60 tp and this prop combination.

If you have any difficulty finding a 24×18 three-blade SEP propeller, try the Fiala 24x17 three-blade prop. I have used both, and both worked well on my model.
