Chris or Kris, Any pics of the cockpit outside of the plane? Slowly trimming all that vacu formed stuff to try to figure out this jigsaw puzzle of a cockpit.

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

Dang, I forgot to look for pics this weekend. I'll see what I can find tonight. Also, if you're interested, I have a resin cast cockpit set that has all of the details molded along with paper templates for the cockpit tub. It builds into a much nicer looking cockpit.

Ditto, Chris. I need a cockpit for my A-7, also.
Thanks!

Got the PM's guys, I'll reply here shortly. The cockpit consists of the following resin cast parts and uses the kit supplied vac formed ejection seat. As mentioned, there are paper templates provided for building the cockpit tub from (I used 1/16" balsa). There's a full set of instructions along with decals for the instruments (the dials on the instrument panel need to be painted white before applying the decals). I had intended to release it as an add on kit for the airplane, but ended up not offering it for various reasons.

Resin cast parts -

Painted cockpit with pilot (our 1/10 scale full body pilot was made for the A-7) -

Regarding the pipe length, I will check tonight and post here.

The tam pipe I used on barrys A7 is 14 1/2 inches long. But keep in mind the engine is installed pretty far back. It was electric before and I used the existing mounts and I don't think they where stock.

I finally remembered to check the pipe length. For the wren 44 and the intended placement, we used a 20" pipe. As Kris noted, a shorter one can be used by adjusting the engine location.

Hmmmm I have a short one from the avanti project that I think I will use. I like the turbine farther back. I bought a pipe from your dad, but 20" would put it pretty far forward, not sure I could get the tank where I want it that way.

I'm still blown away with the quality of this ARF.

Barrys balanced perfectly with the kingtech receiver batteries and ECU battery all the way up in the nose. No weight added. Think I used a 40oz dubro tank also on this one.

Dang, yeah that firewall mount won't work.

Ok, it's the 555RS. 90 deg retract that retracts towards the cylinder. http://robart.com/collections/retrac...ostrut-ready-0 It should do the job.

I got the cockpit kit from Chris. Ten times better than the vacu-formed stuff. And almost as important, really good instructions. I need to take some time to add some more scale things, but for the most part, I'm happy with it. I didn't have any gloss black, will need to go back over the visor.

I've got all the flight control servos and linkages done. I ordered a low profile servo for the nose steering, that little dip right on the bottom of the fuse just behind the nose wheel is perfect to run regular steering cables. The 40oz tank will sit just above it.

Had to butcher the mains to get the intairco breaks and wheels on, would have been miserable without my little mill. Still not the prettiest job, luckily the hubs will hide all the cutting I did ;-)

I got the templates for the fins on the scale drop tanks (thanks Chris) Just not sure how far forward to from the end of the tank to make the cuts. Anyone have them assembled? A picture of the back end would tell a thousand words.

Hope this helps. It only has 3 fins also.

Mike,

Looks like you got it sorted. Here are some additional pics including how the templates are intended to fit within the glass tailcone.

Ok, got the pylons to wing done, how are you mounting the drop tanks? Chris, I see you made the scale shackles, but how do you really secure the tank?

Thanks

Mike,

In my case, I've not actually setup the tanks and bombs to fly with them. In the picture, the tank is held with magnets to the sway braces purely for placing them on the airplane on the ground only. That being said, you can simply place them onto the pylons for flight using two servo screws (ones with integrated washers) on the pylons and key holes in the stores. The screws are screwed into the bottom on the pylon hanging down. Depending on whether you have the scale openings like I do or not may require gluing in some balsa blocks for the screws first. Then, using a dremel and a small 1/16" cutter bit, dremel a couple small keyholes into the stores at the appropriate locations to match up with the screws. The orientation of the keyholes should be such that you slip the store on and then back (to the rear of the airplane) to lock it in place. It's a friction fit and you can adjust the pylon screw lengths to the desired length for the amount of friction. Hopefully that made sense? It's a really simple and effective way for placing stores on our airplanes. I've been flying the wing tanks on my mirage like this for years.

Came home to an empty house last night, a rarity. Got some work done on the A-7. Equipment layout is one of my favorite parts of the build process. Trying to put all the necessary stuff up higher so I can access it with the top wing panel off. ECU will go right behind the pilot.

Gotta paint it and make it look pretty, but this is a good start.
