Fea bao jets hawker hunter FGA 9
this thread is for the fea bao jets hawker hunter only, this is the ground attack version with a stronger wings to take 2 tanks per wing and more weapons watch out for more news soon. meanwhile look on ACE JETS website for photos and more info, and possibly David Gladwin can put his extensive knowledge to good use on this very fine aeroplane.

I was with Colin Straus yesterday and he had his third flight with the FB Hunter. He now has it flying nicely with the correct CG and the correct movements. Looks good in the air.

that's great I see it fly on the first video the landing left a bit to be desired probably because of the model being tail heavy, this is going to be a very impressive model on the ground and in the air. I am told that FB JETS will have one on display at jet power in September but apparently it is already sold, but orders are being taken now and I am told that a first batch of twenty are being built for delivery in November/December.

Yes the video of the second flight was still tail heavy and Colin has now loaded more lead in the nose and it is about right now. His information on CG is vital to having a safe flight and those that follow will benefit from his test flights.

So far as the FGA 9 is concerned, the only noticeable external differences between a 9 and 6, from which the 9s were converted, is the brake chute housing and the cutaway on the outboard edge of the flap to allow carriage of the big tanks and weapons pylons.
Other mods were internal, additional wiring, strengthening, better a/c etc.

Hi Guys,
Thought I would share a few pics of the Big FB Jets hunter. Their product keeps getting better and better. This is one large jet. Over 3m long. It arrived a fortnight ago. Pretty much complete now and ready for me to finish the decals and weathering (my choice) before clear is applied.
All the servos hatches as is usual with the FB stuff are direct mounted with 3mm into t nuts on the surfaces so they are supper strong. There is a massive amount of room. Standard fuel tanks total just under 6L.
The main thing I was impressed with was the retracts and wheels. Fitted with great ball-bearings and working significantly better than some previous retract units. Some of the retracts out of China at the moment have very small tolerances, where a little more would generally be nice. I am just waiting on some details from Catherine who is touching base with Colin, but other than the CG, pretty much ready to go. Very nice build and as usual much easier build than some other kits.

Hi Gents,
I have had about 17 FB Jets models over the year and have done a lot of the construction manual for the new ones too. The LG and wheel on the hunter have obviously had a bit of work done with them. When I get a model, the retracts come out. I locktite everything and bold them to the underside of my work bench and check the minimum pressue they need to start moving. Obviously, they have more air pressure aginst them in the air. The nose retract retracted at 28psi applied and released at 12psi. The Mains retracted at 31psi approx for both of them and released at about 14psi.
The Wheels are now fitted with Ball Bearings each side for the axle and are very free spinning. I will take a video tonight if you like.

Hi Extra, By the looks of the struts, wheels and retracts, a fair bit of work has been done on improving them. The are strong and the entire retract area has been reinforced greater than any other models of both FB and other manufacturers have done. While I have never had any issues with the first production models from FB Jets that I have done testing and builds on, these seem to be another step up. The Fin elevator setup is strong and supper smooth and all the parts wings, tail etc take no effort to assemble.
Model is pretty much finished. Just need to fit cockpit and screw the boards in. I will take a heap of photos tomorrow for you to look at of the internals and close ups.

Yes Tyson they certainly look workman like. It's what's inside the leg that's important though, I understand considerable modifications have occurred in there. I had the chance to inspect the model during its second outing and the first main landing gear was totally inadequate pressing on the model the leg would hardly move and when it did, it jammed, preventing full retraction.
Colin and I had long discussion about the model and what we needed to see to improve it. The external rudder link was considered ugly and the engine needed to move forward to reduce the considerable nose weight Colin was forced to use. The jury is still out as to whether an aluminium outer pipe is necessary (you will no doubt report on this shortly) The one disappointment for me is the "live" hinge elevators, it was mentioned to the factory but they said "it would be too difficult to change now" I intend to modify mine to match the aileron format. Lastly Colin and I intend to convert to hydraulic gear operation, mine will have external cylinders on the mains as the full size. Anyway Tyson yours undoubtedly will fly before mine so I look forward to the rest of the assembly and the flight report/video.

My Dolphin gear was quite stiff when I got it. I took it apart and cleaned the ram and cylinder. Not the retract but the shock absorber. It had a lot of paint residue from overspray. Other than that the gear has been great....even with my landings.

CG recommendations

After about a dozen flights with new Hunter. I determined that the 105-110 mm CG is perfect!
The fuel burn-down during flight will transition the CG toward the aft point I've listed. The aircraft has absolutely zero bad handling qualities at these points.
The only weak point on this design is the landing gear carbon mounting area's! As delivered, the factory is not generous with the application of their version of HYSOL?
I strongly recommend removal of the flap area to drill HYSOL access points along the trailing edge to ensure a good coating of HYSOL along the gear plate box area's that you can not reach thru the gear areas!
Good luck with your build, it is otherwise a very strong structure.
