Default DV8R, who is flying them and what would you change?

I will be resuming work that I started a few years ago on a broken DV8R and I'm curious to know if anyone is flying them and what changes do you suggest ( bigger 125%, smaller 85%, turbine size, wing incident/position, stabs angle, gear, nose shape, more wood/less, wing incident on the ground, horns/push roads position internal/external )

I have a 29 lbs. thrust turbine flying a Boomerang XL, I like to have a second airframe on standby for the future.

Thank you.

I'm sure whoever monitors this site waits for me to type a lengthy reply so they can take it off line for whatever stupid reason!

Not going to the trouble again - built smaller one, changed nose, flys good

Thank you for replying, I had a feeling you were going to post, I've seen the pictures of your modified DV8R before, very interesting, I will be working on this project in the months to come, I'm not in a rush at the moment and have other projects that I like to complete before dedicating 100% of my building time.
I'm also planning to do some mods but not by much, I like to keep the looks as much as possible ( different is what I'm looking for )

Is that a build up wing or foam cores? Does the wing have a wash out/in build in it?

Thank you.

Yes, it's a foam core using the building methods of the original.

It has a little washout (about 6mm on the templates pinned to the foam blocks).
I had no details of the DV8R wing section so I used the Selig section from the
Top Flite P-47.

Do you have the build manual? If not I can email it.

John.

I was thinking to mount the Rudder servos on the vertical stabs and the Elevator servos on the elevators stabs by mid point, I had a Cermark Viper set up that way and It did fine at all speeds, used the JR 3421s for the Elevators ( one each ) I was also thinking to modified the nose to a wider one like the one on the Reaction, the nose retract to be mounted like the new Vipers, to retract backwards, build up canopy, again like the Reaction, Robarts struts like the original PCM one, Robart like hinges for the flaps so I can get a 90 degrees deflection and fiberglass hinges for the Ailerons, a center drop tank under the fuse to be used to carry smoke oil.

I got me a broken DV8R from Johnny Woods and he send the manual with it, I think it is the manual you get from TBM since the jet is the ARF one, if you have the original one I would like to have it.

Thank you

Those are nice pictures Mike, did you end up making two openings on the sides for a better airflow to the turbine, I'm thinking to some how supplying the turbine with more air when the jet is on the ground.

John
You mention on another thread to add more wood to the fuse because of all the holes around it, I will be considering that since I'm planning to mount a 29lbs. thrust turbine.

Yes Carlos, I covered the top NACA Scoop that the original manual suggested and opened up the two side holes to direct air into the turbine section. It makes the model more interesting and works well. Really a fun model to fly. Its fast and predictable with a 30lb thrust turbine.

I had the TBM DV8R version and the turbine really wasn't getting any air to it. I made a Venturi Air Intake to the turbine and it seemed to really help. I never did like the TBM landing gear. It made the jet sit too low and I feel the springs were completely wrong for the jet of this weight. Anyway, I had a ton of flights on the DV8R and just recently sold it. It's a good jet and looks great in the air!!

D Mike
Could you post or send me some pictures of the Elevator and Rudder control set up, which struts are you using? How long? Those looks like 3" main wheels with 2 1/4 wheel on the nose. Did you moved the CG from the original spot.

Thank you

Have an original PCM DV8R that is powered by a older 160 Titan. Got this plane RTF used with 500 flights on it and I flew the
crap out of it. Had a flame out and found a post where the plane ran out of flying speed and sheared off the wing. Had a
flying buddy rebuild it last winter and she is as good as new and only needed 2 clicks of aileron trim........... The only thing
I know of that the original builder did was add triangle stock to the glued fuse joints and this baby is proof that it can take a
licking and keep on ticking ;-)

Carlos, I have the original settings from the original PCM models manual. Struts are from Robart 7.5" tall. Main wheels are 4" Intairgo Nose Wheel is 3". As you can see in the picture that airplane sits perfect on the ground with plenty of clearance for landing nose high. CG is at factory recommendations. My airplane is heavy at 34 lbs empty. I have 120 oz of fuel 40 oz of smoke, drag Chutes and bombs. Take off weight is 43+ lbs

Mike
Is that a Titan you have on her? Which servos are you using on the control surfaces? What is the function of the two servos at the end of the fuse?

Thanks

Still flying the original DV8R from the first kit Pat McCurry produced. Still fly it with one of the original p-120s with smoke system and 120 oz fuel tank. Been flying off of grass field for the last 6 years.

You're telling me that you're flying a 43 lbs. jet on TO with only 19 lbs. of thrust then if so, how long is the TO run for the jet at that weight?

How much fuel are you carrying? and how many minutes do you get with the P-120? ( 27 lbs. thrust ) I assume 8 minutes with two go around, anyone?
