West Michigan Jet Rally - June 9-11
A couple folks have been asking if we are doing the Jet Rally this year. The answer is yes.
The Lake County Modelers Flyers is hosting the third annual West Michigan Jet Rally June 9-11. Accommodations are listed on page 2 of the flier. Accommodations are < 1/2 mile away. Full service camping is just up the road a 1/4 mile. Primitive onsite camping is also available.
For those that have not been to the LCMFA flying site, we have a 3800' paved runway with paved taxiways and pit row. The sun is to your back all day. Please see the attached flier for more details.
This is an AMA sanctioned event. Typically we have 20-30 pilots from all over the State and even a few from surrounding states. This event has proven to provide lots of stick time for all. This is a low stress, high fun-factor event.
Our flying site is located at the Baldwin Municipal Airport, Baldwin Michigan. We have very little full-scale traffic. So we ingrate full-scale and RC traffic. Occasionally, we even have folks that fly in for the event.
So, why not load up the trailer, come in and make our third annual West Michigan Jet Rally your event. If you have RC cars bring them along. We have an excellent RC Car Track too! In the evening it gets really laid back. Who knows what you will see flying through the airspace in the evenings! We even have a couple night flyers! However, for this event priority of airspace is to jets.

Hey guys all of the West Michigan jet guys plan on being there for the weekend. We have added an additional 50 feet to each end of the pit lane and hope to have it black topped before next weekend. Also have added 2 concrete start up areas along side of each of the taxi ways out to the runway. They are 15 x 40. Hope to see you all there

We just finished the seeding around the Pit Row Extensions. I may get out there tonight and get some new pics. Had to get out of the sun for a while. Pit Row is now 200' long. Need some rain this weekend to get things growing. It has been really dry here.

Len,
Am going to try and get over there really late Wednesday night in my RV, is that going to be an issue? I plan to just find a spot to park overnight and then figure out where to move in the morning.
Thanks,
Randy DesRosiers

I will be arriving there Late Wed. afternoon and will be there through the weekend. Len usually will have his trailer there by then also. Any idea what time you might be pulling in.

Thanks for the invite and a great time. Best year out of the three yet. Each year it gets better. I know the visiting pilots appreciate all the hard work you and your team do to make this event one of the best. Hope to see some of you again throughout the year.

I personally thank every pilot, family member and club member that showed up! W/O the pilots and family helpers there is no show. W/O the club members that set up and take things down after the show, this would not be possible. Thank you!
Well, ... we had 35 registered pilots. That is nearly double the number we had last year. We also picked up several new club members.
One EDF crashed and one Turbinator's gear fell off on takeoff and kind of burned in the resulting grass fire. The weather was great even though a short thunderstorm slipped through during one night. The Army's helicopter blew down Jon's large tent the night before the event. But we had it repaired and up before Jon arrived on Thursday. The food was great with Dave's Riverside Cafe set up on sight. As I understand it, all the local motels were booked. Thanks guys! Our business people are sponsors and help us pay for the event! They look forward to and appreciate your business.
We had one plane spit its pipe, but Jim brought it in w/o a scratch or burn. Fortunately it was only the inner pipe. We had one of Nicks planes burp off the front of the turbine. Arnold's EDF just kind of took off on its own path and wound up out in bear country. We express sympathy for your losses! Other than these few incidents all the hardware was working fine. Guess our local rule that all crashes have to be pre-scheduled helps!
We had fliers from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Rosendo came all the way from Tennessee. Rosendo went home with the Prize for furthest traveled. Marshal , ...Thank you for that excellent donation. Also we gave out about 50+ other pilot prizes. Most pilots went home with something.
Below is a video Jim Maike took while we had a few jets lined up for the spectators. I am not kidding when I tell you that we have a 3800' runway with your sun to your back all day. Check out that asphalt Pit Row and RC Taxiways! Flying RC at 7D3 is just like flying full scale out of GRR.

We have another event lined up for July 7-9. The West Michigan RC Expo will have Jets, Giants, Nitro planes, and Gas planes, Electrics, Cars and Helis. Whatever is RC is welcome. We even have some club cars and planes to loan out. Hope to see some new folks there. We typically have about 40-50 pilots and lots of spectators for that event. Why not come and join the fun?
Again, ... Pilots, families and members, thank you for all you do!
