SM 1/5 F-86 "Black Angel" FliteMetal Weatronic 10-22 Gizmo Receiver Build Thread
An oldie but goodie. This kit is one of the very first kits SkyMaster built. Originally sold to Sung Kim maybe 6-7 years ago, it sat in Master Builder Henry Ngyuen's shop un-completed. I just acquired.
First job plan the radio install. I cut a hatch in the scale location.
I still need to install air fill valves, as well as one or two smaller pressure gauges.
FliteMetal is moving forward as well. I like to start with the smaller panels, and do rivet work on each part, as I go. My Scheme

Hi David,
I'm really looking forward to your build. I don't know if these pictures will be any help but shows some of a build I did around five years ago.

Yes, patch antennae is the plan. I have one installed at the top of the nose intake pointing down and forward. The nose will be painted, as the nose intake on the real jet is composite, so no FliteMetal to obstruct the reception. The second antennae I plan to install at the rear top of the cockpit, pointing up and back. The canopy frame will also be painted. The antennae will be located above the FM fuse radiating thru the clear canopy.

I'm using the Bat 60. On the waiting list for the 64.I saw the Bat 60 for the first time at BITW last year. Woody, from Ultimate Jets had a booth. Though, admittedly I had been talking about it with Oli some time before. Picked it up at tha AMA Show in Jan. Awesome radio! Now with the PowerBox involvement, I'm really excited.

The jet has been set up for internal, work done by Henry Ngyuen, but I am leaning towards going external on the ailerons, maybe the rudder, as well. What's been your experience? I'm open to input.

BTW - The scheme you've selected looks awesome!

I started with external on the rudder based on feedback from Dustin at BVM. On my second flight my ailerons fluttered (internal linkage) at medium speed, so I converted to an external linkage and never had another issue, even at high speed. Have you decided on an engine? I suggest something in the 180 range. I had a 160 in mine and it was anemic. It could barely maintain level flight with gear, flaps, and speed brakes out.

I'm planning on a 40lb Jet Central Rhino for power. Was thinking about the JB220 but they are back ordered for months. Saw one used on RCU, but someone else got it before I could.

So.....great timing....I'm seriously considering using flite metal on a project I have on my bench. Is Flite Metal similar to the Aluminum tape they sell at the hardware store, or is it more "stretchable" or heat treateable?
Not trying to undermine the product in any way, just trying to understand how it is applied so I can "plan" accordingly. I really want to do this!
Thanks,
David

"Similar" yes. There are a couple different types available, at Home Depot, for example, that I use for small panels/sections, as it only comes in 3"" width. One is very similar to FliteMetal. For large fuselage and wing sections, I've found nothing better though than FliteMetal. The FliteMetal is much more workable for stretching around curves etc.

Wondered same. using tape, the panels would limited in size to about 2"x 2". tape sticks well but in the heat of the sun? Whereas David shows a large panel applied with FM and imagine it does well in the heat based on other models. Looks great.

These were all done with the Nashua tape I picked up from Home Depot. Works great and gives a nice contrast to the larger FM panels, as the material is slightly different.
Finished with FM
