One minor issue...the "Thunderbirds" lettering on the side of the fuse is not paint in the mold but Vinyl Lettering. It was not positioned in the same place from left to right. This will drive me nuts. I sent an e-mail to CARF asking for another set of these decals so I can position them evenly.

Here is a look at the Hardware and accessories. I wont be using that fuel tank since I have the Jet Tech tanks. The CARF tank looked very nice but is nowhere near the strength of the Jet Tech. The bypass ducting looked very nice with some very strong carbon fiber employed. The inner SS Pipe is incredibly strong! I have ever seen one this strong!

Well that's it for now. I will get some detailed photos of everything as I proceed with the build. I may get a chance to start today!

I would lay money that the supplied instruction manual is an old original classic flash one that has never been updated from day one -

I believe there's an addendum of a few pages at the end of the original manual for the Ultra.

Yes, and I really like the CARF pipes. I have had enough issues with kero-start engines ruining pipes that are built "light" but are in fact too light, that I'd rather have a robust pipe that can handle a little extra heat than save the 2 or 3 oz. that the "light" pipes save you...

I'm with you Bob on the pipe. Especially since the turbine is buried out of sight.

The instruction do appear to be old since they reference getting the first release kit out with some updates pending. I will have to look for any updates at the end of the manual but I did not notice that. The manual that came with the kit is identical to the one I printed off the CARF website.

John Taylor....good to hear from you.

What are the dimensions of your carbon bell-mouth pipe entry - accurately as possible , it is a bit hard when installed & hard to do accurately when installed
Thx.

Melanie from CARF responded to my E-Mail in less than 8 hours (awesome considering the time zones). She has a new set of decals on the way and wanted the photos so she could follow up with the Quality Control Team at CARF.

Great Service!

Dom, there are only minimal differences and they are covered on the first page in the download labeled Ultra Flash

What are the dimensions of your bell-mouth inlet to the thrust tube ? all facets to include height , length , thickness , diameters of inlet & pipe connection

Mine is installed and without a heap of disassembly it will be hard to measure exactly -

Reason behind this - add to my data base for inlets currently on the market made from c/f , a c/f will perish under a wet start scenario , I am starting to make replacement spun alloy inlets

An alloy inlet bell-mouth will stand up to a bit more heat than a c/f , weight penalty is minor/negligible

Your c/f bell-mouth inlet is not installed as yet - thought you might take 5min to write down some details

Thx.

Hi Scoeroo.
Here are the dimensions you asked for the ID of the pipe end is 3 5/16" and the id of the bellmouth end is 5 7/16". The wall thickness of the CF is 1/16".

Dividing my time between my other hobbies, I am only working on this jet about once a week. Being a paint in the mold airframe, there are seams where the halves are joined. The wing was not that bad but the stab had a more pronounced seam than I cared for. The thunderbird scheme takes maximum advantage of hiding these seams based on where the color breaks are. Still I wanted to see if I could improve things a bit. I used various sized sanding blocks to work the seam down. I also spent some time cleaning up the excess glue on the control horns. I also sanded them in preparation for paint.

After sanding I was left with an unpainted section that was between the blue and white color breaks. I masked this off with fine line tape then paper and masking tape.

At this point I gathered up all the control linkages and screws used throughout the airframe that needed to be white in order to match the surrounding area. I purchased the CARF Touch up paint which is a 3 part Urethane (color, hardener, reducer). Using my airbrush, I painted the stab seam, control horns and all the hardware.

Next I gathered up all the linkages and other hardware that needed to be painted blue and sprayed those with my airbrush.

I received my replacement "thunderbird" decals in the mail today. Looking forward to doing some building this weekend. The painting I did yesterday will set me up to get some actual work done.
