Default Aviation Design Mirage 2000 1/5

Hi!

I received a kit of this excellent model recently and i am planning to start the build soon. However I am looking for a complete landing gear set. I would order at A/D directly but the delivery time is very long, so maybe someone has a set avaible or for sale?

This is a great kit, looking forward to the build. I'll share pics when i start.

Cheers

Roy,

Yes, Actually i am still working on it and it'll be ready to fly by the end of the month. I just didn't feel to report about it because it took a lot of effort (and nerves) to finish it. I always work on 2-3 planes simultanously. When I am fed up, I'll put it aside and continue a few weeks or months later. I did split the wings on the Salamander as I felt it was too complicated to transport. Fitting wing tubes and reinforcements took a lot of time.

The Mirage will be a long time project as well. I'll plan to have it ready next year same time.

Cheers

Tuggs,
Nice, only a few of us salamander pilots around. I am looking forward to your mirage build. I have looked at that kit many times. I do like that airframe.
Hoping to start my F-89 Scorpion soon. I did get a Y pipe from Tamjets before he closed his doors. Decided to take your advice and go single turbine, JM 200XBL

Hey T,

Beautiful and one of the most rigid airframes out there. I would compare it to none, you need to get the kit in your hands to understand how rigid this is. Like made out of metal. Eric and Aviation Design know really well to make this kit.

I wouldn't say the same though about the landing gear. AD Jets used to have a supplier from Russia for the LG. Honestly? Cr@$*%&&#p

The worse scale landing gear out there. As I've heard (better late than never) Eric's looking for a new supplier for the LG for this kit but may have not found one or this is just rumors hence the delay in shipment. I know a few others currently waiting for this kit but cannot receive it due to landing gear missing. But what I can do is share with you my personal experience after the last 3 years that I’ve owned this kit.

Both main legs broke in 2 separate occasions, one 2 years ago and one last year in November. Hard landings? Naaaaaaaaaaaa. Cr@p material/workmanship? Yip.... the stock legs are for static display only. Also the air cylinders rusted. Yes you read well - rusted in just 2 years. Below are some pictures. So I decided to convert the system to electric and pay another 1k$ by having them converted in Down And Locked (great job by the way).

Today I have a functional plane but I really wish I didn't have to go through the ordeal after spending tens of thousands of $$$ on this kit.

You're doing well to find the correct LG first, if I were you, I wouldn't go for this kit until I found the right LG and for sure I wouldn't buy the stock ones.

Wish you the best of luck in this project, if I can assist with something, please ask, but in general the built is straight forward more or less.

Enjoy, Tassos

Tassos,

Thanks for your wrap up. I received the kit on Saturday and I must agree with you.The airframe is great and the surface details are also superb. I am really looking forward to get started but the landing gear is causing me headaches. If AD is changing manufacturer, great. I am looking into other gear options right now and will let everyone know.

I'll put some pics of the kit soon, it is a real beauty.

Cheers

Good luck T,

By the way, you could find a few more interesting details with these guys in France gamme Dassault MIRAGE - Boutique you might want to add to the kit. I've added a few things of what they make.

Looking forward for your built.

Tassos,

Some nice details actually. I am definitely going to order one or two of them.

I have made some progress regarding the landing gear choice. A german manufacturer (HAWE) is producing a nice landing gear set for the Mirage. There are some slight modification necessary to the gear mounts in the wing to make it fit. The main legs are reversed, so not correctly displayed on the photos. I think I will go for it. Price is also interesting. I spoke to a Mirage flyer here in Germany who used the HAWE gear - he is very happy with it. It pulls up the 152mm wheels without problems.

Hey T,

Looks very interesting. Yes the cylinders need to be on the opposite side of the legs and fit into the wing due to the low wing profile. They look, simple, nice and sturdy. Much better than the stock ones. Good you found these.

In regards of the landing gear you guys all right they both snapped when I went off the runway into the grass no damage to the mounts or the airframe though but now I have found a local CNC guy and I had that cast aluminum parts made with aircraft aluminum and I have no issues at all it cost me $60 per retract I have two sets one standby . I also beefed up the airframe right under the canopy it was too flimsy with carbon fiber and the airplane flies unbelievably stable and it lands very slow I fly it with a P300 jetcat. Here is how I made my engine hatch on the mirage from aviation design check out the pictures. I do not like that canopy hatches they keep breaking so I incorporated a piano wire.
