Default How a Wal Mart static display can go very wrong

This thread is not meant to be political or stir the pot in any way, shape or form, only to inform others so they do not have the experience we did. I hope any political comments are deleted by the mods. I’m a member of the WARPS RC club in Berwick, LA. We host 2 fly ins every year, one in the spring to coincide with a local festival and one in the fall, usually the first or second Saturday in November. The Saturday prior to the fly ins, weather permitting, we do a static display at the local Wal Mart to hand out flyers and promote the events. We’ve done this display for years without incident, this year was different. We had been set up for about 2 hours when two ladies who claimed to be managers came out and asked if we had permission to be there and who had given the approval. Our club secretary who had obtained permission from the store manager spoke with the ladies. One of the ladies said we could not have political displays this close to an election. Apparently the 1/10 scale 727 done up as Donald Trump’s original private plane was considered by them to be political advertisement. Not sure how as he is not on the ballot and even though we did not agree with their objection we agreed to cover the Trump name on the side of the plane. At that point the other manager said we could not display swastikas or other racist symbols and had to remove two other planes. When we asked what racist symbols we were displaying she pointed to the two ugly sticks that were done in the traditional red and white with iron crosses on the wings, fuse and tail. When I pointed out that they were iron crosses, the German air force national insignia which is used to this day on all German military aircraft, and not swastikas we were informed we were causing a disturbance and had to pack up and leave or they would call the police. While we started packing up our club secretary tried to reason with the two managers, to no avail. One of the ladies stated that even though they weren’t swastikas someone might mistake them for one. Shortly after that the ladies left, and as we continued to pick up two sheriff’s deputies arrived. The managers had called the police on us, even though no voices were raised, no threats were made and we were cooperating. The deputies treated us with respect, understood the situation and were just doing their job, but the fact they were called in the first place is an issue.

I understand that it is their property and they have every right to decide what’s displayed there, and with the exception of the 727 that was just recently finished, this display was no different than any others we have done in the past. My advice to any clubs that do this sort of display is to get your permission for the display in writing and make sure the person you get it from is the final word, as apparently at Wal Mart any manager can call the police and throw you off the property.

I’ve attached pictures of our display, including one showing the Trump covered up. We didn’t have any German WWII planes with swastikas on the tail or any allied warbirds with swastika kill markings.

That's ridiculous. This world has gone way too soft and who is walmart to worry about being controversial. Some of the richest CEOs going with some of the crappiest wages paid. I suppose you were promoting terrorism as well by showing remotely piloted vehicles that could potentially carry explosives.....

makes me happy to play hermit in my shop.

With today's level of triggering and outrage, the Walmart managers may have been doing you guys a favor saving those planes from getting stomped on by some social justice warriors passing by on their way to protest in front of the store.

I had a small extra 3.25 years ago built from plans it was roughly 1/12 so I used a barbie type doll for a pilot from the waist up. Yellow ping pong ball for a helmet with black wire insulation as the rubber trim. Every time it was on display at the field it received a ton of votes as spectators choice from the little girls because it was one of the only ones with a female pilot. At the mall show someone complained it was too busty and was obviously sexist. I took it home after the first day as suggested by the mall manager. Be careful how you breath someone may complain your taking more than your share of air?

lucky you guys you don’t have any fully white painted aircraft it could be taken as some white power stuff or something like that.

Like Freud said, "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar". People like that will never see the obvious...they are just models.

You should report this to your local newspaper and TV news station and get them to do a story on it. When they interview you encourage people to not shop at Walmart.

I can see the media twist on that now. " A group of white supremacists were at Walmart attempting to recruit our youth using toy airplanes as bait".

Blatant political posts removed, replies quoting them are gone too.

Keep it about the situation specifically, or the RC aspect of it without getting off track please.

I have seen the trump jet multiple times, even seen the maiden. I have pictures of it in my collection, its one of my favorite jets at the events we attend becuase it is different and it is a beautifully done model aircraft with a fantastic paint job, plus I love my president. Keep your head up buddy. You guys are not the problem, the enjoyment and passion for sharing this hobby is something desperately needed. Unfortunately this crap is an example of what our country has come to. I guess we should be happy this story didnt end with a mob trying to dole out a politically correct wal-mart whoopin, and somebody destroying your planes, to be honest, that would not surprise me either. These are some Crazy times brother,,and no matter how hard I look I dont see a light at the end of this tunnel..

Unfortunately just like swastikas can be a symbol of repression to some, I can totally understand how the Trump brand label could do the same to others.....specially minorities and woman.

Crazy times indeed.

Just like I can't compare a caravan of desperate folks seeking asylum, a mob.

Please, let's continue this conversation...................

Falcon wings, not going to take this political but have you seen the videos of the caravan throwing rocks at people and destroying and looting everything in their path when they meet resistance? Remember throwing large rocks at people used to be a form of execution so yeah, they’re violent. Just making sure you’re informed
