Default ATJ 220 SV turbine arrived

My ATJ 220SV turbine has arrived and I will be testing it out. Not to many people in the U.S. are using this turbine but it appears to have good usage in Australia, Asia and some parts of Europe. I will be putting it in a sport jet, to see how it runs (should be easier to land in case of a dead stick than scale).

So far it looks nice, It seems to be a combination of kingtech and Jetcentral with internal solenoids, xicoy ecu, but metal starter housing. The compressor is forged aluminum, however. Price wise its was $2700.00 from Taiwan, not too bad for a 22KG (48.5 LB) turbine. The warranty is 3 years but needs to be sent to Taiwan for service.

the temp/rpm cable is a CAT5 plug (Ethernet) and not the RJ11 plug found on most other turbines.

Good luck with that
I started my experience in turbines with this company. Wasted time, wasted money, their servicing is total crap.
Moved on to Kingtech since, haven't looked back, and so have most people I know who fly in Taiwan. Haven't seen a single ATJ flying, other than mine, which did one season after I had to rework it to fix the problems it came with.
1) combustion chamber sealed to diffuser with silicon -> blew out at the first full throttle test
2) cold soldering of the starter wires -> broke off after a few starts
3) high operating temperatures, hot spot -> the EGV got corroded and ruined within 10 hours of runtime
4) internal kero start burner -> 'burned' after the second start (not like it was working well to begin with, fuel was not even igniting, just smoking.....)
5) temperature probe not well supported on the sensor board -> got sheared off after a while

Should I add that Joseph in Taipei never bothered to answer me about any of these issues and I moved on to repair it myself, to fly it for about 10 hours until the bearings failed. Haven't bothered fixing it again and it's a paper weight for now...

It's a 120ti

It was damaged in a crash early on and I sent it back to the factory to be restored to new condition. They charged me about 85~90% of the full price and the result is what you see in my previous post.
After opening it later on (when my requests to get it working were promptly ignored) I found out they hardly changed anything other than the electronics (and the compressor wheel, which I did not send them in fear they would reuse it, deeming it not fit for the repair).

Hrm,

well I will keep on an eye out, I pan on doing bench test today, do you think they did bad repairs with the silicone or was it like that from the beginning? This SV series seems nice from the outside, of course that doesn't matter if the inside components are not up to par. We shall see, I talked with some pilots they had put 14-15 hours on there turbines and they said the engine has been running fine so lets see if the SV fixes some issues the TI and original turbines had.

I've owned Atj engines since the beginning of the company had issues but at the time others were going through the same pains. Never had issues with getting swift service living in Australia probably helped, all I can say is the company has improved with quality and service the new line of engines are great.

Well bad news to report:

GSU reports a BAD GLOW error! Emailing them and see what they say, is it possible the internal burner got damaged during shipping?

The seal was badly designed to begin with: the lip of the diffuser into the outer case is too thin and thus did not have enough space for a decent size groove to accomodate the sealing o-ring, which is too thin.
So they used silicone to 'make it work'.
The worst thing though, was the way they basically 'sold me back' my own engine, really angry about that.

I took the can off my 120ti to have a look when I puchased it wasn't sealed with silicone looked OK wonder if they had issues with quality control at the time.

Today I flew the turbine and it went very well. The ATJ 220 SV is a very strong and fast accelerating turbine, I would say on par with the Behotec 220. Performance is also very good. My issue with the bad glow error was because of a bad cable, the ecu/burner were fine.

So far everything went well, the only thing of concern is that its a pretty thirsty turbine, I'm guessing around 25-30 oz/min at full throttle? But overall very pleased excellent price/performance ratio.

So, whats the verdict? Would it be total waste of money getting one of new SV series? 220vs190, only difference is power and exhaust temps?

Only ground ran it so far, waiting for maiden flight.

Start was uneventful. Pretty loud compared to VT80. Spools up nice and did all the tricks I was able to try on our yard. Didn't stall even tho I had a lot of air in the system, just kept getting back after a hiccup.

Feels ok.

We have several ATJ 220SV running in Israel - they are powerhorses! plug and fly.

To continue the user report..
17 flights so far in Mig29. This turbine gulps gas but delivers also power. 4 liters of gas for 6 mins of flighttime + few mins on ground and taxi. Starts are weird as 5000mah lipo gives you 2-3 successful stars and after that temps do not go up enough to initiate ramp sequence. 8.0 V in lipo will not start the engine... only flames inside and smoke..

I also have experienced flames at starup , may be caused by my fuel which is diesel. Maybe different settings like kingtech has for diesel..?

I had to send my to factory as I noticed fuel seeping between front cover and main housing next to festo fuel connector. It bubbled out under pressure and evaporated. Maybe solenoid leak or somehing. That extra fuel leak also might cause excessive fuel usage..? Or not.

downside is that that the turbine is now in taiwan in the middle of flying season.

Some bad luck my 190sv has over 100 flights just over 18 hours without one issue.
