Wow.... Three days worth of reading, multiple neurofen tablets for reading off my cell.... And 700 Euros less
Took the plunge and ordered a BRIETLING Albatross.
Wren gold and dx18 with ar9020.
Just a quick question... Anyone ever installed the eFlight electric retacts 46 size of horizon hobbies?
I was looking at installing them to keep weight down.... And use the set I have in a box
Now the wait starts

I have used the 46 size retracts from Horizon. They work reasonably well but are a bit weak for the weight and speed of the model, a heavy landing and the will bend. Many have used Springair retracts which are very robust and light weight. I built several jet models with these retracts.

Hi guys - I still fly my L39/Wren 44 Gold regularly, and every time I fly I can't understand why I don't fly it more! It's fun, fast, stable and predictable, and will fly great even in
a heavy wind - just let it fly itself and don't over-correct! It looks great and is one of my all-time favorites!

My first one is 9 years old with 220+ flights on it. Still going strong but looking a little worn.
So happy with it as an everyday flier that I'm building a second one. I'm putting e-flite retracts (25-46 on the mains, 60-120 on the nose), TamJets trailing link offset struts and DreamWorks e-brakes/ Intairco wheels on it so no more air needed. Got a brand new kero start 44 Gold to put in it also.
The e-flite retracts were the only ones that I found beyond Spring Air's that will fit. I tried the small DreamWorks Pro-Link gear and it would almost fit but the air-fittings got in the way. Maybe the electric version would fit better. Jet 1A retracts not readily available in the US, and very expensive also.

George.
I'd have preferred the 60-120 size on the mains also, but they are too big to fit. I have a lingering concern that the 25-46 size will be too flimsy, but time will tell. Almost ready to fly it; just working on equipment install.
I am using the 105deg nose retract on a specially mounted plate in the nose. I can get the gear fully retracted inside the plane and also have the leg at 90deg to the ground when extended. NWS steering servo is also mounted on the same plate. Should be solid.
I also drilled out the gear pins to 3/16" and replaced them with piano wire. The supplied pins are too brittle and snap rather than bend.
The Tamjets strut links are;

George,
The 46 E-Flite retracts work great with the Tam struts - I have them fully installed in my new L-39. My only concern is the long term robustness of the retracts, as noted also by John Wright.
I have given the SpringAir retracts a beating in my old L-39 and they haven't complained. It's hard to get anything other than piano wire legs to work with the SpringAIrs though, and I wanted something more resilient than piano wire. With the Tam struts on the SpringAir retracts they just don't fully retract which looks untidy.
The current L-39 does seem to have a significantly different construction than my 9 year old version - the fuselage of the new one has a lighter glass layup with local carbon reinforcements, but without the foam core in the front fuselage skins that was a weak point in the old one. The wings seem the same from what I can see.

Thanks Paul....
So I will order the Tam struts and wheels.
Would it be to much to ask for a picture of your fitment?
The jeta1 are lovely, but heavy in material and price. Those will be my last resort if the 46 fail.
I will be using the 46 all round, not just mains....
Would love to see how they look and had them set up...
Thanks Paul.

Thanks Bob. Well since I have a set e flite retracts, might as well use them and keep the weight down.
Paul, how did u install the nose strut? L shaped bracketing from aluminium?
I just checked from xicoy the 57mm wheels and brakes plus controller. 195usd... Not bad! Awaiting from tamjet to confirm shipping. 17dollars to Europe would make me believe they will be shipped ground! Some three month wait!
As a general question, would electric retracts and electric brake weigh less then the jet a1 combo.
Weight is the determining factor, coz the difference in the price from jeta to Tam jet combo, is about 300usd...
Are the jeta and all the valves, switching servos, canister and plumbing much heavier then the electric equivalent?
Thanks.

Was getting these.... And re drill struts for 3/16 pins....
Agree?
Reread your post and saw the nose wheel is fully retracted.
Any picture of the nose mod?
