finished my home built turbine
Hi all
I finally finished my home built turbine.
Thought I would show you the final product.
The major parts I made were the outer case, bearing tunnel and fuel injector system.
Machined a turbine wheel from a blank cast (.Artés).
Incorporated a MW-54 type bearing cooling system
Then tweaked the burner/injector for best fuel efficiency.
It passed its AMA homebuilt test in the Alabama mid summer heat.
It’s been a long road. Thrust is around 16 to 17 # in the heat.

RE: finished my home built turbine
Johnny, just doing my weekly look at RCU and noticed your posting. The engine looks different than when I helped signed it off this past summer. I thought the engine I signed off was a KJ 66 Kit from JDE with some famous Johnny Klinner enhancements (at least that's what I wrote in my notes. The red nose cone is a nice touch and sorta sets the hole engine off.
Oh yeah, I just getting my hearing back from those test runs...

RE: finished my home built turbine
Hi
Bob
It’s understood in the turbine building community if it’s not a 54 it must be a 66.
Yes the core turbine came form JDE with caged bearings I replaced them with full component angler contact bearings.
This changed the preload witch lead to a 2 year R&D on my part. The results are an effortless low temp start, cool and smooth operation
Remind me if I am wrong the temp was over 90 close to a river with high humidity and some runs on the turbine were below 500 c.
A kit-turbine should never go under the home built waiver that is why the AMA requires kit’s to be a copy of a production turbine of some sort.
This makes the kit work the first time out of the box and is AMA approved after the assembler does a test run at home no witness needed (by theory).
The assembler is not required to solve problems also the kit may not be modified in any form.
On the other hand the home-built are opposite although rules must be followed you qualify your work by a working turbine.
As I always say to you “if you do not have a lunch you may have mine”.
You’re a great asset to this hobby.
So hears a proposal (not that type)
The AMA is about to change a lot of turbine rules if the buddy-box and the CD-turbine signoff is adopted.
I will supply my jets for you to get all the airtime you want so you could get you waiver.
That way Alabama will have a turbine-CD.
Bob you fly great already and with your personality it would make a wining combination.
How does Saturday sound to get started weather allowable?
Sincerely
Johnny klinner

RE: finished my home built turbine
Johnny, with an offer like that how can I refuse such an offer - I accept. But I would like to do the ground school so I can learn and learn the basics like you have. I'll print off all the AMA turbine paper work that is required and have it with me. If the weather is good - I'll get to the field after the morning club breakfast, then at the field all day. It'll be like the ol' days with you at the field, the last time I saw you was when Joey Hamilton and I signed off the engine and yes it was one of those typical Alabama summer days. Where are you doing your flying?
As for the proposed rules changes, "The AMA is about to change a lot of turbine rules if the buddy-box and the CD-turbine signoff is adopted." I haven't heard about them, I'd be a little leery about that - AMA doesn't move very quick when relaxing safety rules.
What specifically is needed to become a turbine-CD?
If you get a chance come to breakfast Saturday morning at Chik-Fil-A.

RE: finished my home built turbine
Bob that’s the best news all week! Saturday we will get you starting turbines. Did I see you at the field when we test hopped Jeremy smith hot aileron Bobcat? (We hade to doge the Suicide crop dusters).
Flying at R.A.M.M’s when the weather is good and with the cows by the house when the weather is not.
AMA rules say that no one may fly a home-built turbine but the builder. (Easy fix I will pop another turbine on the Roo)
And until the buddy box is adopted no one may fly a turbine at an AMA field without a turbine waiver. (Another easy fix we fly with the cows until you get your waiver)
Become a turbine-CD? Until we have changes in the rules it would be easer for a fat man to for through the eye of a needle.
Saturday morning at Chik-Fil-A, if I get packed up and out in time.
Will call tonight
Johnny

Johnnyjet GOOD JOB on your home built turbine. Welcome to the (S.L.F.S.R) SPEND LESS FOR THE SAME RESULT club. . By building your own turbine you will understand the inner working and can do any repairs needed.

Johnny
That is a good looking turbine.
I have a JDE 54 which I bought a couple of years ago. I assembled it and tried to run it but didn't have much luck. I sent it back to Dennis and he replaced the combustion chamber and ran it. I have tried to run it since but haven't been able to get it to go. I have been trying to learn 3D so I haven't messed with it much in the past year. I was wondering if you are going to be at any of the jet flys in the spring. I thought I hook up with you and see if I could get it running.
I am in Mississippi so it might be possible to get together.

RE: finished my home built turbine
Thanks unknown
“(S.L.F.S.R) SPEND LESS FOR THE SAME RESULT”
I wish I could be in that club.
After years of labor my, little free time a milling machine and lathe.
Not to leave out 3 turbine wheels, 2 bearing tunnels, 6 ceramic bearings, 4 outer cases, 2-fuel manifolds/injectors and 2 EGV.
I could have gotten a part time job at McDonalds and bought 2 jetcat p120’s in 2 years.
Took the parts money and made a nice down payment on a new truck to haul my p-120’s in.
If I had a chance to do it over again, - you know what I would do different?
Nothing no not zip
Hi
Hal
I may have email you before my in-laws live in aliceville AL
How close are you to them? We will get that 54 running like a top.
I thank you all for your kind comments.
