RE: Yellow Aircraft F/A-18 Twin!
Hi Thomas,
I now understand the process; thanks for the explanation.
What is the point of this method; is it to save 'weight' by reducing the amount of resin to fill the fiberglass weave, or is it for 'strength' or both?
Thanks,
Joe

when you lay the 100% polyester cloth over the fiberglass and epoxy (west systems, Zap Finishing resin etc) you want to use an old credit card or flexible spreader to squeeze whatever excess resin there may be through the polyester cloth. don't worry too much about wiping away the excess because when you peel back the polyester cloth all that excess will come with it.
i think the link i provided talks about it in greater detail. i believe B1 Bob also mentions it in his videos.
happy to help
cheers

Buck,
I think I understand the purpose of the polyester cloth; the polyester cloth is used to soak-up the excess resin and in most cases, eliminates the need to sand after the resin has cured.
I'll pick up some 100% polyester cloth and give it a go.
Thanks Buck,
Joe

Gotcha. Yeah I figured there would be some sanding to knock-off the high spots etc. I'm looking forward to giving it a try. Thanks again for the info on this method, I'll likely do it this way from now on; anything to avoid manual labor.
Off topic; do you know if Joe McBride is flying his with a 'single' P-120 or twin? I'm just curious as I've seen his Youtube video, which is very impressive and even more so if this is a single. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoipfg8kGAk
Thanks Buck,
Joe

that's the single engine AIR START Fire Breathing OLLIE amigo. if you watch the video again (i never get tired of watching the master either) just after he runs it up he removes the umbilical cord which hooks up the air, propane and glow.
Old Red is probably the heaviest Hornet out there (aside from maybe the SWB Big Red or the Original Pink Hornet from AMT)
good old girl for sure

She is officially retired and will live out the rest of her days as the queen in Joe's hangar. Lot of memories of the 'ol gal.
I probably shot 30 of her flights over the years.

Wow...that's amazing and the best landing I've ever seen!!! He stuck-it brother!!!
I may end up doing a red & white scheme as well. I've heard that the Hornet is particularly difficult to see in the all gray scheme and my vision is so-so.

Thanks. I remember cringing when I first watched this video. All I could think about was those weeds wrapping around and yanking at all that resincast gear detail bolted onto the struts.
I called Joe that night, and he was like "OMG, I didn't even think about that".
To this day, that is the best test the gear has been through without a scrape.
I can tell you that they don't fair too well when the "shear pins" shear, and the gear go slinging down the runway separate from the rest of the aircraft :-)

That is goooood to know! You're right, the Yellow F-18 is a big mama-jama. I could go all gray and maybe do the centerline tank in day-glow orange as a compromise until I get used to drive'n her.
I concur, Paul Reese has the 'right stuff' with those gear. The landing gear is such a prominent attribute to the F-18; it just desires the very best attention to detail. Look at me; talking myself into a set. Shoooooot Yeah

Yeah....
How long do you plan to live? Here's what you ought to do: Call Paul and find out what he's asking for the gear right now. Take that amount and put it in some kind of interest-earning device. Even with today's screw-the-consumer banking practices and interest rates, you should be able to get the Reese gear AND a the Yellow F-18 Twin ARF to go with em by the time the gear are ready.

If you don't have a substantial amount of both, these gear will kill you.

RE: Yellow Aircraft F/A-18 Twin!
I cannot thank everyone enough for all the info that I have used from this thread. I built a twin 120 powered F-18 for a fellow years ago and gathered info then, and now I am about to glue the fins on myown F-18 and was wondering if someone could please give me the distance between the top of the fins.
Thanks very much, Dennis.
