I built a twin 120 powered F-18 for a fellow years ago and gathered info then, and now I am about to glue the fins on myown F-18 and was wondering if someone could please give me the distance between the top of the fins.

if you set the fins at a 70 degree angle (double check the manual) you'll be all set. perhaps you can PM Shaun for measurements to be more precise. i'm going off memory

I have recently acquired a yellow f18 twin from a fellow rc member at a price i couldnt refuse. its the older green fuse version. Its never been flown but has been built for turbine installation. the only concerns that i have is that i have read some of the other threads(about the plane breaking apart in mid air) the bulk heads seem to be 1/4 inch plywood. i am in the process of making an extra 1/4 inch plywood to double up the bulkheads. Is that sufficient enough? Has anyone done any other modifications I should know about? Also, the pipe is already installed, the front of the pipe is 3 1/2 inch in diameter andin the exhaust nozel side is 2 1/2inch. I am planning of using a mamoth or a p200. Is that sufficient openings or do I have to replace the pipe? Also if anyone has a manual that can make a copy and send it to me, I will compensate you for it. Thank you in advance, chris.

My understanding on the topic of the bulkheads after talking to Charles (the owner of yellow) is that he redesigned the bulkheads years ago to accommodate a jetcat 180. There is a new bulkhead kit that you can get off him if you like. Shaun Evans here on RCU can probably help you with that too. I think Charles also stocks the appropriate pipes (and they are very nicely made and packaged for shipping) but if not I am sure Tamjets would have what you need.

I have the kit and ARF version which I am yet to fit out but they are a great flying jet with the correct ground stance for smooth takeoffs.

hi graig how are you?.........the problem is that thebuilkheadsare already glued and i don't know if i can remouve them without dameging the fuse, also how can i put a new pipe wen the bulkhead is already glued

Why don't you post a couple of pics of the bulkheads, and I'll let you know whether you are good-to-go or not. Depending on the pipe and your bulkheads, you may be able to get your pipe in and out just fine. What pipe is it?

Hi,

Weeellll....looks like you might have a couple of issues going on there. First, you definitely need to reinforce the front former. What you have there is correctly identified as the older, ducted-fan type bulkhead in there. Basically, the same one that was in the Hornet that blows up on the video. Like that bird, this one doesn't appear to have any glassing-in of the bulkheads (or even a glue bead from what I think I see in the pictures), though it's called for in the instructions. When I built one from the kit which had those bulkheads, I reinforced the bulkhead by doubling it with some carbon/aluminum composite. On the next one, I used 1/8" carbon plate. You would probably be ok with just 1/4" ply (Midwest or other good quality), but I would use Hysol and still glass those two main bulkheads in.

I'm really not sure what I'm looking at pipe-wise. It looks like there are stock DF exhaust tubes in there with a GEN 1 pipe of some sort inside it. You're definitely going to have to cut that bulkhead out to get the pipe out, but that's not going to be as big of a deal as it might seem. You would only need to draw an oval shape that is big enough to allow the widest part of a new pipe to pass through, then use a dremel to cut your hole. You definitely want to go with a modern pipe, though. Ours are very high quality, and rated to P-180.

It seems like you might have had more than one builder on this. You see that sometimes with a second (or third) hand build, where parts of the construction are obviously done by a competent craftsman; then other items are monkeyed to the point where you know that the person had no clue. Anyway, let me know if you need anything for it.

ok ....great i will be call soon for and order, i just need a little time to put a list together, also cylinders for the doors and the speed break.....now a few more questions
the wings and stabs look and feel very strong, but i dont know what is in side?
do you sell builk heads from the new generation jets?
if i cut the builk head for the pipe then what, just double it up again?
do i need to reinforce any other area with carbon cloth?
do you think maybe i shoud cut the builk heads out comletely out and just install newer stronger ones

If it was me. I would scrap the bulkheads inside the fuselage and replace them with the newer style ones. I would also replace the wings with the new carbon reinforced wings.

Looks from the pics like he already has the newer wings. If you look inside the servo pockets, you can see the carbon cloth.

I don't know that it would be worth it to redo all of the internals. I think you just need to double up the front former, and you need not worry about the rear former, even after you cut it for the pipe. As long as the spar receivers are properly attached, there's plenty of meat there to render it safe.
