BVM F16
Hi Guys, I need your help here.
I have a chance of buying a BVM F16 Ducted Fan c/w BVM91R, Viojett & BVM pipe. My only limitation is I have a grass strip 550-600ft long. My previous Y/A one handled it ok but I'd like your opinions before I buy it. Would it take off ok in that distance?
Thanks
Scott

Scott,
500-600 ft is plenty. How smooth is the grass? If the grass is too long, it may hang up on the gear doors and rip them off. Happened to a friend of mine's plane. Also, if there are a lot of holes and rocks, it may snag on the small-ish nose wheel and flip the plane. Seen that one too. If it's a good deal, try it out. You can always resell it if it doesn't work well on the grass. It's one of the best flying DF's out there. If your Yellow F-16 flew off it fine, you are okay. You won't be sorry. Hope that helps.

RE: BVM F16
keep in mind that Yellow had two versions. One with scale gear at the scale location. The other one had sport gear with the mains located one inch forward to help with rotation.

RE: BVM F16
Thanks for your input guys... my strip's just been relayed after new drainage was put in. It's pretty smooth and we keep the grass very short. I've had both versions of the Yellow kit and both were fine.
Looks like I have some "negotiating" to do

If memory serves (which it doesn't always! [&o] ) I think it was about 11lbs without any underwing stores or wingtip missiles on it.
You won't be disappointed in it!!

RE: BVM F16
Dear Sir,
Fist of all I would like to introduce myself.
Me Farhan Mahmood from Pakistan working as IT Administrator in a well know
Company. From my childhood I have Great attraction towards flying and still
now my interest is growing day by day.
I have visited many web sites and found very useful information about
flying. But, unfortunately I did not find my desirous requirement for which
I am searching for a long time but did not find the right spot, but I do
hope that being a specialist in flying field you can help me in the matter.
In fact I want to build F-16/or Other Jetplane with Ducted Fan or Turbine
Engine. For this very purpose I need its Complete Drawing/Plan and other
related information's in the form of one stop user manual/operation
manual/Catalogue or any other stuff which you think that can be useful for
me.
I hope that you will do the needful in the matter and will show your
personal interest for which I shall be thankful to you.
Bets Regards,
Farhan Mahmood.

If you ask me that model is not meant for grass, the landing gear is just too delicate. The yellow landing gear is a lot beffier, and has no oleos which help keep those doors away from the ground. I just don't see the nose gear withstanding th roughness of grass.
I had one and it flew great off pavement, probably 400-500 ft roll. I wish I hadn't sold it, it was my firt jet ever and it flew great.

I flew my BVM off the grass quite a lot... (Including Top Gun at West Palm and other places).
It works fine off of relatively smooth grass.
The BVM Gear is VERY sturdy. (There is an aluminum pivot block in the nose gear made (or was made).... if your is plastic.... it is more durable.)
Probably want to start the Takeoff roll with FULL UP, reduce to 1/3 as speed picks up and the controls get a bite... Then Rotate when the speed is appropriate.
(This technique helps due to the fact that the gear is in the scale location, so there is a lot of weight on the nose wheel.)
Make sure your ground stance is at least a little positive (and absolutely NOT negative).
Have Fun,
David

Well, my landing gear was not new for sure but it wasn't that beat up either.
First of all, this model is quite unstable due to the oleos, wouldn't know how it would handle off grass on that aspect. I had a gyro locked to my NG steering servo and it did help. My doors would touch the pavement every now and then even on smooth landings, it all depends how worn out are your oleos.
My main concern is that the NG retract has no locking mechanism, the pneumatic cylinder keep it locked. How much grass field beating could this take?
Nope, I wouldn't call them sturdy. I would actually call them somewhat delicate. The Yellow ones ARE sturdy, but that is only my opinion.

Not sure I follow this.... As far as I know.... NO F-16 models have problems with doors near the ground! Certainly the BVM has no trouble with doors at all.

'doors touch the pavement on smooth landings'
Surely you jest??? If the doors touch... you broke something!
I still fly my BVM F-16 with stock gear and a Turbine.... 17 lbs DRY!
The BVM nose gear has an over the center down lock.
Which generation of Yellow are you referring to as Sturdy?

Well, I have both versions of the landing gear. No functional difference between the two, unless you mean the "A" verison which only used Springairs or similar. The only problem I see with the Y/A retracts is that they don't have oleos, so all of your loads go the main AFT former. But they make the airplane very stable.
On my first YA F-16 takeoff, I pancacked the jet flat out of a stall. The airplane bounced and lifted 6-8 ft and then fell upside down. The retracts took it and only the doors broke.
Had it been my BVM it wouldn't have survived, the oleos would ave ended up on my ducting.
My nose gear in the BVM had no over the center locking mechanism that I could recall, did you upgrade to the aluminum one piece-self contained unit?
I didn't say that main gear doors touched all the time, but hey have. Not only that, the BVM retratcs have so many set-up parameters.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved mine. Jst didn't like dealing with the landing gear, that's all.

RE: BVM F16
The nose wheel absolutely has an over the center down lock. Yes, the air cylinder is located separately (Not related to the fact that it has a down lock).
I have never used the NEWER all metal nose gear in and F-16.
I am still a little unclear on the main doors. Do you agree that the only way to touch the main (or nose) doors on the hard surface is to break the landing gear (assuming it is installed properly of course)?
Perhaps it would help me understand if you would explain the circumstances/LG configuration that occasionally allowed the Doors to touch in a bit more detail?
Have Fun!
