Gary,
Nice work! Flown it? Do you have a slightly smaller pilot for it, though? That guy looks right for an F-16, but he'd be 9 feet tall in an Eagle!

I used an old MGA pilot I had lying around.....he is a bit big, but better than no pilot at all. If I run across one a little smaller I might swap him out.

an aside,,,a real israle f 15 had a mid air wioth a mig,,,it took all but 3 feet of the left wing,,,,,the pilot decided to bring it in,,!!! he had to mantain 225 to keep flying,,,needless to say he burnt the brakes and tires but didnt overrun the runway. shows you just how much lift is generated by the fuselage,,!!!!now back to the models, hehe

I had the very first F-15 produced by Philip Avonds back in 1986. Being his first customer, he invited me for dinner at his house when I picked up the kit, kinda cool to think about now. It was powered by K&B 7.5's in Turbax fans and weighed a scant 7 kilos. The airplane flew great, but the engines were a nightmare. I later sold it, it was flown at Florida Jets by Per Strommen, suffered some damage, and was again sold in the US. Maybe it's rebuilt and alive somewhere that side of the Atlantic? I'll try and find some pictures to post here.

I have to admit, I am surprised to read your post on your old F-15. I was just googling "Per Strommen F-15" to see if I could find anything on this plane. Then I came up on your post!
I was at Jets over Deland back in 94 or 95. My brother ran Telstar Video, and I was his brother and camera guy. We picked up Mike Cherry of Traplets RCJI from the airport. He was attending the event from the UK and covering it for the Mag. He shipped in his Avonds single F-15 and was going to fly it. I had an unbuilt twin version of the Avonds F-15 and I was excited to tell Mike about Per's twin version that I had seen in the pits that morning. When I told Mike about the twin, his reply was "Throw it away". I guess he was partial to his new single F-15.
In any case, I was eager to see inside the twin, as I was going to be building mine soon (I still have it NIB!). Per was very kind and spent considerable time showing me the plane. He had modified BVM rotating retracts for the mains, an innovative sweeping servo tray to sequence the gear and doors, and he had converted it to twin OS 91s with Ramtecs w 1/4 wave short pipes mounted on Weston UK soft mounts.
I remember seeing Mike fly his single 15, and it did fly nicely, albeit, it was not speed demon. I remember his quote to me about the twin, but I was still not sold against it.
Then, later in the afternoon, I heard the distinctive call of twin 91s running up in the pits. I ran over to see Per's plane taxi out and put the hammer down. It kept into the air and he pulled straight up for nearly 400 feet. Then he pulled the plane over and proceeded to tear holes in the sky like today's turbine planes perform. I have still only seen one DF plane, Kluhrs SU27 that flew on twin Angstrem .91s that performed similarly.
In any case, I was sold on the twin version over the single, and I waited to see the plane fly the next day. Per's flight was similar, however, at the bottom of a high speed maneuver, the airframe stressed slightly, compressing the balsa hatch stiffeners and cracking them off of the hatch. The hatch departed in flight and the plane was difficult to control. While making an attempt to belly it in, it snapped and cartwheeled in the grass. The nose was cracked and broken off on one side. The stbd wing had the tip broken off, and the tails and stabs cracked off at the glue joints.
Per gave me the plane after stripping the servos and gear out of it. I still have it tacked back together in one piece, but in its original paint. I just took it out of storage last month to finally get it in the air again. It is exciting to hear that it was the first kit produced!!
There was an article written about it in the Jets Over Deland issue of MAN, but the picture of Mike Cherry's single F-15 is mistakenly noted as Per's plane. The crash was also included in the Wipe Out crash video by Telstar Video. I captured it!
I'll get pics of it if you'd like to see it.
Best regards,
Anthony Kalil
