Big ME 262
A big thank you to all fellow modellers who provided encouragement for me to repair my big ME 262 after the accident at Pampa earlier this year and then again at Wroughton at the end of the season.
Two bad luck crashes with the same model in one year was a hard thing to face but I am now pleased to say the model is all back together again just waiting for some decent weather.
The model is approx 2kg lighter after the rebuild as I took the oppertunity to change a few things and lighten some parts. details of the model are :-
Scale 1 : 2.76
Wingspan 4.6m
Weight 60 kg dry
Fuel capacity 15 litres
Power 2 x AMT Olympus.
I must say a big thank you to Bennie at AMT for servicing one of my motors over christmas when I noticed some damage to the compressor wheel as I was bolting it back into the model. Looks like it had eaten something in the crash. To fix it over christmas and return it to me in 1 week is superb service.

RE: Big ME 262
Hi John,
Glad to see you got the 262 in the air again.
Would you like to come up to Bentwaters in 2005, as we are organizing Monthly Jet/Warbird Meetings.
It would be good to see you and your 262 in 2005
Cheers Graham

Deat John
I'm glad to see the 262 is airworthy again.
Would you like to bring it to RAF COltishall some time.
Provisional date for Battle of Britain at RAF Coltishall 2005 is Sunday the 4th
of September, Saturday the 3rd of Sept also for people travelling great distances.
Any chance you might grace us with your presence.
Regards Phil Goff.

Good on yer John, it is one impressive model. when I got back from Pampas I had more shots of your 262 than any other model. here are a couple. I look forward to seeing it fly again in 2005.

John

Yes, well done John, amazing determination in the face of so much adversity. Looking forward to seeing you around the Jet and LMA meetings during '05, should be a bumper year for big jets around the UK and European show circuits.
By the way Dick....any pics of yesterday's CJ at Abingdon....posted anywhere ?

RE: Big ME 262
Well done John,
I frequently land under the surface of the ground!!!
It pains me to rebuild and rebuild. Your project is in a different dimension, I have never rebuilt an aircraft twice (would probably weigh 3 times what it should).
I have seen Ghost squadron and their aircraft at many shows and exhibitions and they always entertain. i beleive I am right in saying in terms of big jets, you were certanly a pioneer!!
Congratulations on the rebuild, I really hope you don't have the same bad luck this year.
Regards,
Gazzer

I think that Graham Hughes was taking pictures for the JMAs website (www.ukjets.co.uk) and the chaps who run the Bumpy Green Site were there snapping away too, so maybe some there. I have a few still in the camera...will download later and post any that are reasonable!
Happy New Year,
Dick

RE: Big ME 262
Update
Took the big ME 262 out last weekend with the intention of having a flight. Got to the field and found over 30k of wind. taxied around a bit to check all was well and found that even at 60kg plus 12 kg of fuel it would lift off into the strong wind at a very low airspeed. Had fun hoping it off the ground at low power and flying down the field in ground effect.
Can't wait now for some good weather.
I did manage to re create the fault of one motor not coming back to idle (The cause of the Wroughton crash) so all the trundling around the field was well worthwhile. Looks like the problem is a cell in the pump battery has gone high resistance and so the battery can not pass the current required at full power. as the cell voltage is dropping so fast the ECU can,t cope and gets confused.
Before you all panic, I am not using the normal set up of one battery for each motor. I have one big 5500mha battery in the nose feeding both pumps. In cold weather at full power the current draw is about 14 amps total and it is this that is causing the problem. With only one motor running I could not replicate the problem.
Proves the point of testing and going out even if the conditions are not good.
Have ordered new batteries and when fitted I will try again.
