Thx guys - I met Brett at a Jets Over Temora meeting a while back.

Is he still doing Turbine maintenance?

I got the feeling he was getting out of that scene...

    Oh, Kewl

Good to see/hear from you again, Brett.

    How things?

I'm glad to hear you're still in the game - still planning to get you to give my 2 x JJ3000's the once-over before I eventually put them in an aircraft/boat.

Haven't started them for well over a year now - just been soooo busy on all sorts of things (as well as trying to juggle around work etc.) I still have the pair mounted on the 'test bench', covered with a plastic painters drop sheet to keep the general garage crud out. I wonder if they're still ok to start up again? Or is there the chance of some sort of corrosion having taken place in the absence of consistent starts?

Anyways mate, how have you been and what are you up to?

    RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread

    Hi Tony,

Your 3000's should be good to go as long as the bearings have had a small amount of residual oil on them and no corrosion has set in. Give the rotors a good spin by hand first to see if there's nothing silly going on in there, if they're still smooth, you should be ok. Make sure you flush the old fuel out of the system/tank/lines and pumps first as it will probably be stale and will possibly have the dreaded fungus and a bit of moisture happening..! Smells 'orrible too.!

Still running my little 1/4 scale afterburning jet dragster, mainly at car shows, drag race meetings etc... has a nice new "Kingtech K180G" 40lbs turbine fitted in it now which I started for the first time last week...she's got plenty of grunt too!!....
Also now have an afterburning turbine powered full size go-kart, has a highly modified Garrett 6041 turbo and produces ~220lbs of thrust...!!!!.....which I will also take to the car shows soon. I've just bought myself a cheap VW transporter van on the weekend to carry them both around in....just need to get a new gearbox for it and will be good to go..!

    Cheers,
    Smithy.

Sounds like you've been a busy boy, Brett

I'll check my blades for smoothness before next start up - if they still spin freely and take a while to slow down, all should be good I hope.

How does the afterburning RC Dragster go these days?

The go-kart sounds interesting. Is that the one you have a vid of fitting a switch or something for? That one is a turbo-charger remote burner can jobbie, yah?

    RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread

    Hi Sean,

The "new G" model Kingtech engines are indeed red, they also differ with the inclusion of "onboard" solenoids which now live under the front cover, the new K100G and K180G just has a single fuel line and no external solenoids. Not sure about the 100 but the 180G also has an "internal" thermocouple which is actually in between the NGV and the turbine wheel, a very clean looking engine indeed. Very quick and very powerful, my 180G has well over the rated 40lbs....I've measured mine at 41.2lbs @15c (also @ sea-level).

The 100 is pretty much the same size at the K80 and the K180 is the same size as the old K170.

    Cheers,
    Smithy

I saw a little 8lb'er a while back - I think it was a KingTech? Yellowish anodized casings.

Can't remember if it was a kero-starter or not now, but it was a sweet little machine and started no probs.

I see HobbyKing have entered the Turbine market too these days, though no-one's actually sighted/tested one yet that I know of.

Still - I have my JJ's. Starts are now perfect (though it's been a while now), thanks to Brett's help getting me on the right track. Good to see someone else chipping in to get your 170 sorted out on another thread, Brett. You've given a lot of people a helping hand, so it's nice that some of that good Karma has come back your way

Xjet has the HK prototype for testing of course, haven't heard of him spooling it up yet though. He had it strapped to a bench last month. I wonder if he's working with HK to improve it before releasing public comments.

    RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread

Yah - Bruce has had one for a while. But as 'RCModelReviews' instead of Xjet.

He hasn't posted much since all that crap went down with SWDC/SWIM. Which is a bit of pity, as he put in a lot of work for that club and in his vids, IMHO.

Unfortunately, he took on the the Establishment - and lost.

A great shame. Again, just my opinion - I think Bruce was good for the sport. Put them on the map over there in NZ, and showed some of the fun we can (safely) have flying all things RC. Enter the "Grouchy Old Men". The rest is history - but it reinforces why I hate "Clubs". Period. And not just in RC - I've come across the same attitudes in other areas. When the powers that be start getting greater than the sport/hobby that they're supposed to represent, it's time to take a good hard look at who is running things and why they are there. Usually, they are where they are because they have an axe to grind and don't give a rats who/what they take down with them. All in the name of "right"...

    Nuff said on that one...

Neat pics......it is a later version than the JJ1400 I have. There is some wear on the impellor.....ate a few bugs or grass...thanks for posting. The pic of how the fuel lines are distributed is great....much better than earlier version of the JJ or Wren that I own and since had upgraded to this design.

The wear could simple be small dust moving at high velocity over soft material. The aluminun of the difusser is fairly soft in a JJ engine. Same stuff that caused impellor wear.

    RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread

haha...that is my engine in the pictures above.
I sent it to Christian in Italy for a service.
Did not realize that he had uploaded pictures here.

I must say that he did a great job on my engine and documentation.
He sent me pictures of what he was doing, and videos of the test runs.
Live via facebook, so response was instant......what else could you ask for
I doubt any other turbine service shops has the same customer service.......so thanks Christian.

I bought my JJ-1400 ages ago, but have only flown it about 8 times.
I trashed the bearings only after the first 2 flights when I replaced the starter motor, and pinched the lube line under front cover when I assembled it again......my bad mistake....
I replaced the bearings myself, and had 3 more flights, until 1/4 of a turbine blade left the turbine wheel.
I ordered a new turbine wheel, and replaced it, Also the the internal lube line was leaking, so I replaced it with a new one. But I noticed the new one was a little larger in diameter for more flow.
    Flew 3 more times.
But the bearings sounded bad, and it was thirsty, as the new lube line was giving the bearings too much fuel/oil now, and I shelved the turbine for some time.

I recently decided to give it a last chance and send it to Christian for new bearings, and a propper balance.
I bought my JJ-1400 when they first came out.
It turns out mine has a 1200 compressor, and front cover.
It only makes 5kg thrust, but it runs well.

    RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread

Received the turbine a few days ago.

I ordered and installed a lube line restrictor from this site in the UK:
    http://www.sportsturbine.com/index.html

Fast service and delivery of JJ spares.

My front cover was scratched and dis-colored, so I dopped it in phosforic acid until the blue anodizing was gone....just to make it look different/nicer.
Use glovs if you do this, as your fingers will be blue for a few days if you get any on you.....dont ask how i know

A few years ago when I got my engine, and destroyed the bearings because of the front cover kinking the lines, I drilled holes in the front cover for the 3 lines so they would not kink under it again.
I see the current engine now have 90 degree fittings under the cover, so that is sorted out.......as mine does not.

But.... Christian sent me 2 videos of it running, so it take a little of the suprise out of it

I bought a used Composite ARF rookie realy cheap for it.
With 5kg of thrust, I expect it to perform like a stock china EDF plane

Heres the last flight of my JJ 2 years ago in my Falcon 120:

Unfortunatly, I sold it.......it flew realy well. Just had to replace the hobbyking retracts
