Y/A F-4 Phantom: I've FINALLY started painting
At long last, I finally got off my butt and started painting my Phantom. I have most of the camo laid out on the fuse, and now it is just the matter of filling it all in.
This is my first paint job ( have farmed all my other aircraft out), and starting with the southeast asia camo was a little imtimidating at first, but once I got into it, it was actually fun.
Here's what I have so far:
Brg,
Jeff

Testors Model Master Acrylics. They spray fairly easy, and you gotta love the water cleanup.
I hear tale that polycrylic is fuel proof, so I may use that to clear coat it once paint is finished.
Here it is with all the camo filled in. Going to wetsand it tomorrow with #2000, and get it ready for clear. Wings/ect will be painted tonight.

Jeff

Great to see you back on your F-4. I was beginning to wonder where all the F-4 activities went. You gave me a chance for some catch up time. I'll be glassing my wings & tail surfaces next week. I really liked the camo scheme, especially the desert camo, but poor eye sight is keeping me from go ahead with it.
Kevin, have you done your first flight?
Cheers,
Phil

RE: Y/A F-4 Phantom: I've FINALLY started painting
Thanks for the kind words, guys.
Between moving into a new house, and the remodeling projects I have had going, there has been little time to get busy on the Phantom.
I was a little intimidated at the thought of painting it myself, but it really has been easy to do. It has been a valuable learning experience, and I will continue to do my own paint jobs from now on. This beats the hell out of Krylon in a can!
David Rosado (AKA: Falcon Wings) turned me on to this method, and, David, you were right......it is easy! Thanks bro!
I'll post more when it is complete.
Kevin, I thought you would be done with your Phantom by now! Get busy!

I have only two latches to install, then prime the fuse, Wings are primed(not sanded).
The landing gear thing stalled me long enough to build three other planes, sell my F-18, and start the F-15.
I did get the canopy worked out, thanks for the ideas.
Anyway.....Your right I need to get back on it.

They were ARFs, one was done and flown in two days. The goal is to get the 15 flying by our jet meet in July, I should make if I don't have to wait on "stuff".
Are you still going D\F on the F-4?

Kevin,
Was going to ask if the glue even dried on the planes you built before you flew them! lol Takes me awhile to finish an ARF
Yes....still going the d/f route. Since I bought this house and took on the remodeling, turbines are going to have to wait till next year.
Many years ago, I had a ducted fan Y/A F-4 that I flew the wings off of. It was a great flier, as long as you didn't get behind the power curve. What are you putting in yours?

Here's a couple more. I have the stabs mostly done, all is left on them is some fill in. Going to have to wait on the wings; I need to re- wetsand them, cause I'm a dumb*****.
I'm pretty pleased with the results for my first time painting.

Jeff,
Way to go man,. Be careful with that 2000 wetsand, Acrylic is very delicate, so don't put too much elbow grease.
I have used the Flat Clear Lusterkote and it is OK. If I could do it again I would ahve bought the PPG or Dupont Flat Clear and airbrushed it. But still Im happy with my results.
Don't you love the coverage of the ModelMasters?, and how quickly you can get done?
Your Phantom rocks!
(Too bad it isn't a twin, I have a spare Dynamax/OS/JMP)

Sure the glue was dry! It take 15 minutes to drive to the field!
My time with ducted fan is over. I found that I do'nt have the ear for tuning that system, so when I get back to the F-4 it will be turbine. I tip my hat to you guys that can make D/F work, I would like to get more time on jets with it but.....
I plan on using the same paint to paint mine also, then clear with Omni clear.

Looks great JK!! Makes me want to get back to mine. I recommend the PPG 2021 with the flattening additive. Goes down good and lasts forever! I use it all the time and can give you a hand if you like. I got that idea from the old BVM Inlet Finishing Finese series. I still have the series if you want to check them out. You're on pace though to fly it this season!!!!

Thanks David.......your painting technique, so gotta give you the credit for the results! Thanks again, bro. I'll call you later...wanna talk to you about your F-16 problems.
Kevin,
If you need anything, let me know. I have some decent documentation of that paint job, as well as all the color #'s if you desire. Now get busy and finish that thing!
Commet,
Thanks for the compliments. I'd happily take you up on your offer of help with the clear. I'll PM you my #. I'm nearby to you...actually in Stratford. I'd also like to have a look at the BVM Inlet series.
Thanks!
Jeff
