Default NEW ROOKIE - PARROT SCHEME PHOTOS

Here are a few pictures of this jet I got last week. I will attempt to build this plane over the summer. Any questions or suggestions, please reply. My first impression of this kit right out of the box is that it's extremely impressive. All formers, cutouts and paint quality is exceptional. I will enjoy putting this together .

I've contacted C-ARF about and updated version of the manual, since it doesn't have any reference to the addition of the canards or canopy mounting [&o]. I hope to here from them soon on this. In the mean time I'll start this week assembling the wings and vertical stabilizers.

Hi John,

It sure does look good in person. Sounds like your on the fast track with yours. Please post a few pictures of the canard setup and canopy when you get done. I'm also curious what you are planning for a fuel cell, 2 liter coke bottle or custom Kevlar (15.5" L x 4" OD)? The retract cutouts worry me a little because they seem larger than the complete retract set I can buy at Dreamworks. It appears the struts have already been cut to size for the older fuselage frame.

Here are some additional photos for others viewing this post.

Hi guys,

Same here. I received my Rookie with yellow/orange scheme last Friday and sent three e-mails so far to Comp-Arf regarding canard setup as well as new C.G. points, but no answers yet. Very frustrating indeed.

I got an e-mail from a C-ARF rep in Germany named Marc Froehn today and he said all the new Rookie's are being shipped with the old version of the manual (V1.2). He also said that 95% of the instructions are the same (beg to differ) and that the CG is the same as the older model.

I intend to look to this forum for additional postings for help in complete this jet.

I can see where the C/G will Stay the same, I am more concerned on how the canards are going to hook-up and the throws along with will they remain active thru the entire speed range or do we need to use a mix and switch off at higher speeds , or for that matter will they really make a difference? Thought about leaving mine off or just making them fixed.
I am not geting any answeres yet also, my rep has not sent a e-mail back about my issues .........JOHN

Use 10 MM trailing edge up and down and that should be docile on the first fligths on the canard. The euro goes 15 and way more depending on how you fly.

There is lift charachteristics in the canards, but I agree, the CG should be the same. Being a delta, you have to really mess up to make a tail heavy airplane. I would go with stock CG and move back a 1/4 inch at a time to find the sweet spot. This airplane should be able to stop on a dime on landing. Once I get one, I'll find that CG point.

After my Superbandit and YA F-15, this is going to be a must have airplane, I have a feeling this is giong to be a great winner and very cool flying jet. Can't wait to hear flight reports.

Here is a question I was PM'd,

So do you hook the canards with a Y harness with elevator?
Or put them on a seperate chanell with a mix?
Also i have not used canards before is this right when up elevator is
applied the Trailing edge of the canard goes down is this correct?
Thanks

Hope the anonymous doesn't mind me sharing, but here you go:

The best way to run them together (and you do run them together) is seperate channels and a computer mix percentage wise, for specifics on that, send me your phone number if you use JR, if you don't call someone else cause I can't help you

The canard works opposite your elevons. The trailing edge goes down and when it does, it works kind of like a big flap, air hits it and the pushes the nose of the airplane UP.

I cut the speed brake out last night and it went fairly smoothly. I made it 330mm x 60mm or approximately the same width as the built in glass hinge width and length allowed by the unglued support rails. I did however have some complications with getting the hinge to pivot down to 90 degrees because the thickness of the fuselage in that area is twice as thick as the hinge point for the motor hatch. As I bent it down, the resin cracked on the inside and the white paint on the bottom side showed an uneven hinge line. I attempted to scribe a line for a better hinge point, but was afraid to go to deep. It hinges OK for now and will decide later after installation of the servo whether or not to completely cut it out and add off-set hinges.

Without seeing what you are doing, I can tell you in a tango I built a couple years ago, I had to dremel some thick glass down a little bit without going through the glass to get a hinge to work properly on a speed brake, don't know if that will help you, but it's worked for me.

if you do an advanced search here for "rookie" in "r/c jets" you will find tons of threads on everything you need to know to finish the rookie except info on the canards.. here is one of the best , you should read thru it , it may save some time and mistakes---[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1127794/anchors_1127794/mpage_1/key_rookie/anchor/tm.htm#1127794]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1127794/anchors_1127794/mpage_1/key_rookie/anchor/tm.htm#1127794[/link]

dug up some pics of some fellow rookie/harpoon flyers nice birds... note in pic #1 that this mod-ed bird and the new rookie have 1 common canard pivot shaft, which looks to be easier to set up than the eurosport's dual differing angle design.. and note canopy on doug "afterburners" rookie II in pic #3. also, i have never heard of anyone being able to make the airbrake hinge work well without cutting it completely out and adding some type of nice robart or offset hinges..assuming tht the belly is curved in that area, as is the old rookie anyway, it is pretty much impossible to not cut out and make work right. the airbrake has its max effect at 90 degrees to the belly (less than 90 increases landing speed exponentially).. and it can be made a little larger too if u want. the benefit to larger is u can come in with a little more power on which comes in very handy for go arounds..

I decided to cut out the air brake last night. I wasn't comfortable with the underside of the fuselage warping slightly when the brake was deployed. There is still a slight curve in the fuselage in that area. I planned on using the larger fuel tank (104 oz, 15.5!QUOT! L x 3.8!QUOT! OD), but that would overhang the electronics plate by a few inches, plus you wouldn't be able to get access to the sides if need be. You can't put anything ion the nose (i.e air tanks) because it is completely blocked. However there seems to be room around the gear area or up into the canopy space. I plan to add some additional ply for mounting the steering servo and possibly the canard servo close to the nose gear opening. I also dimensioned the gear openings, see photos below.

imo ,and other rookie flyers tht i know agree, a lot of things about the rookie are variable, not just the nozzle.. the big tank will work- you just have to make it work- if u really want it.. and some stuff may not be asper mfgs instructions or be very pretty (like the back of my airbrake (pic # 5), but nobody ever sees it... as for the electronics tray, i cut it off a lot in back, to get in side tanks, etc.... the main tank size/total fuel quantity decision should be based on engine size.. i have found tht with my 98 ozs (74oz main +(24oz du bro- pic #4) i get a comfortable 8 min flt (with about 1/6 or 1 min left as reserve) with my artes 120 size engine (derated to 124000 rpm from 128000... if ur using an 80 size engine the 74 oz tank by it self would probably last 8 mins, surely.. but i'm planning to put the big 104 oz in mine with 2 - 32 oz smoke tanks on the sides (recycled alcohol bottles in pic #1-2-3), probably 55+ ozs for smoke, after squashing the tanks a little to get them in.. it will work, believe me.. mine is taking off with the help of the nozzle (but no canards) in about 70 ft (grass and asphalt) with a 98 oz fuel load.. and i have my engines power limited to about 85%.. .... is there room, before any canard work, to cut a hole and put the air tanks in the nose? (one by one is how i had to do it, with hoses connected and stuffed polyfoam padding in between as they went in..

u do realize the canard's differences on the es and rookie, right? a single linkage setup is all it appears to need.. what will u use from the euro set-up? has someone done a new rookie with tht already? and - a lip in front and 2 hatch latchs in rear would be the way to go on tht canopy.. my smaller canopy works great with 1 latch.

John,

I have not yet started the canopy mounting yet. There appears to be a small zip lock bag with parts that appear to be used for the canopy mounting I'm guessing. There is no reference to it in the manual. It includes a single spring loaded latch, which I'll probably use on the back end of the canopy.

I finished up the engine hatch this weekend and applying the thin play around the openings. I'll see what I can do with these parts this week. If you manage to get it done by the end of this week please post some pics, I'll do the same. After this week I'll be out of town and wont get a chance to work on the jet for a week.

Did you notice that the rudders bind? The outer painted surface at the hinge catches the lip as the rudder tucks inside. I'll have to bend the hinge line out a little or sand it back some.

Guy's

I've had one of two Rookies to arrive in the UK for couple of weeks-no time to start it yet, but

I expect the C of G to go forward slighly-Not back! Anyway if you go back it will never sit on it's wheels!
I'm going for 20mm forward to start with when I do mine...

I have two Harpoons both with the Kevlar airbrake hinge, never had a problem with them!

The canard arm is a tube with a single arm on one side (left) mine arrived today in the mail.
The servo is designed to mount on the left hand side of the radio plate.

If I get time I'll photo it when back in the office tomorrow AM

Regards

A question- Is one 8411 enough servo per wing panel? I like the idea of fuseing the ailerons but dont really want to buy new servos. I dont fly very fast also. THanks, Scott
