RE: Which Filler?
Hi Mark,
I got it from my regular PPG jobber. I wanted evercoat and once I told her what I was doing, she really pushed the split second.
Let me look at the can tonight to figure out who makes it
BTW what did you do to mess up that hydrogen sensor so bad ?? ;-)

RE: Which Filler?
Yeah, first tanking test had issues a few months ago, but they replaced some stuff in the Orbiter's point sensor box and thought they fixed the issue. Then, second tanking test using ET-120 (the original return to flight External Tank) was fine. Then we rolled back, replaced the tank (for other reasons, mainly ice debris minimization), and then on July 13th we had the issue with ET-121 on the pad. Bummer. But it’s not a fuel cell; it is the ECO (Engine Cut Off) sensors at the bottom of the liquid hydrogen tank. If you have to enter the tank, it’s a REALLY HUGE deal, and likely will not be done on the pad. That means another rollback and we therefore can not launch in the July window. Gotta wait until September. A HUGE bummer after waiting 2.5 years and working like dogs in heat.
But just to be absolutely certain that this remains jet related: have you guys seen the Air Force jets with the radar tracked cameras that will image STS-114 on ascent with hi-res video? Very cool. They might even have filler on them!

Could that filler be used for fiberglass repair?

It will stick like glue, if you do the repair as I stated. No peal out at all. Micro ballons and epoxy is one of the worst repairs you can do. Takes too long for set up time for one thing. And has no structural integretity. Iceing and the others are ready to sand down in 15 Minutes OR LESS. Most are ready in 5 minutes. GREAT STUFF. Been using them for 20 years.

RE: Which Filler?
i guess you guys thought I was kidding but seriously is it lighter than Pirannha Putty?
it's sold at the PPG dealers and comes in a giant tooth paste looking tube with appropriate tube of hardener
I like it. sets quick and sands smooth. however, I'm always looking for a better mouse trap.
cheers

Hi Buck,
I was not ignoring you, I just have not heard of that product. I have used a few grades of Evercoat glazing putty, and then this USC Split Second stuff. I have never seen anything as light as this stuff.
I am like you, always looking for new stuff, take advantage of other people's experimentation!!

RE: Which Filler?
The compound needs to be catalyzed. Two reasons first:better adhesion to the glass/primer, second: faster working time. Like Matt says if its like whipping cream then it will be easy to feather which is a multi-step process. I would not recommend it for filling a wing/ fuse gap, especially if the wings are removable, tends to be brittle.
Then there's the conversation about weight-- most guys are using 30 pounds of thrust on the 25 pound airframe so the light weight bondo conversation is funny.
Aloha

Bondo #801 works great also, feathers great with wet sanding paper
