Stingray
JPOFL,
That's a gorgeous airplane! I've always been partial to the looks of the HotSpot (no surprise there!) but to me the Stingray is even cooler looking.
It sounds from your latest posts like you have flown it. I was just wondering if you have flown or are familiar with the flight characteristics of the HotSpot? If so, how does the Stingray compare?
Thanks,
Gene

Sorry i just re-read my post and maybe you get me wrong (i'm french so sometimes my english is not that good )
To be clearer i meant that 2 guys fly jet at my club without gyro. they fly a DF sport Jett called Panther ( clocked at 320km/h on a radar gun) and they dont use gyro. The take off is very straight.
i dont have any experiance with turbine model nor Stingray. So i will take your word, if you're flying since 15 years and you said that you need gyros to handle it on the groud i believe you. I dont have any experience with gyros either, so maybe i will need some advice from you for the setup
I will order the Stingray soon ( waiting for my next pay check ) and will order the turbine after Xmass everything should be ok for next season flying ( i live in Quebec, it's almost winter here will have to wait 6 month to fly again).
Thx for the info and sorry you find my post a little bit rude, my fault,
Claude Perron

Got My Kit !!!!!
Hi Guys,
Received my kit from Dean at Helijet . Best kit and value for the buck I've ever gotten. Beautiful glasswork and excellent attention to detail is evident. Should really go ! The wings panels are only a little bigger than the vertical stabs on my Super Reaper !

Doug,
Why not just give me a call? I got your one PM, but I'm without a computer these days. I'm using the ones you rent at Kinkos. Since I've only known your for 10 years, I figure you probably have my number :-)

Stingray
I saw Paul's bird at FIJR. As usual, very nicely done by a pro-builder.
I was impressed by the light weight. Personally, I think a 17lb thrust engine is too big. This bird will be a rocket with a 500 size engine.
I personally am not a big fan of small planes due to eyesight problems I have been developing, but this bird and the PCM AV8R really are 2 great simple to build designs, ready made for the 500 size engines.

Has anyone received the retracts from Yellow and have pics they can post? I am trying to pick out some gear for mine. I was looking at the Robart 550 series but they curently have a recall on them. What is everyone else using?

StringRay Retracks
The Robart 550 gear is what I am useing for my stringray. That Recall on the 550's is 6 months old,Just a few sets need a mod to the side frame. So I see nothing wrong with the gear at this time,They seam to work very well, even at low air PSI.
If you use the the Robart 550 gear you should use the 600 series struts depending on the size of wheel.

No Way !!! It's WAY too much engine for it. It was designed for a 12# engine. They fly well on a WM-44 or a WM-54. Even a K-60/P-60 is a little on the hot side. A P-80 may have enough residual thrust, that it won't land.. (lol)
A full sized HotSpot was designed for a P-80.

Unfortunately... they don't. Graupner stopped making them a while ago. I think Carlos is starting to make them again. (CM Jets) AND.... I know one of the guys I fly with has a set of molds, and was talking about pulled a couple. I can find out if/when they were going to work on them.
FYI... the HotSpot evolved into the Rookie. CARF still sells the Rookie 2.

I am VERY SLOWLY building a Stingray, I will be putting the K60 on it.
I bought it as a started kit and the PO screwed up everything he started, fortunately he did not start much. It is hard for me to get the ambition up to get it back on track so I can build it right.
Everything I have read is that it is hard to get it to slow down for landing with a 60 size turbine, the 80 may need to land dead stick.

This is a really nice flying kit airplane. I also bought this kit already astarted. The wing panels were very badly build but since it is wood it was a easy fix. Check my build at the electric jet sub forum.
My plane ended at 13 lb and needs to fly all the way to land it. The brake spoiler is a necesesity since you need to slow it down and at same time throtle up to keep it flying all the way to the landing. Gliding it to landing is to fast and will bounce.
The P60 is ok but will recomend only the carry a limited amount of fuel to fly max 6 min. There are some really good reviews using a wren 44 which uses 40 oz of fuel. With 13 lb of flying wheight think I´m on the limit of having a docile stingray jet.
cheers,
Juan

I have had one of these for a long time (over 8 years?) and had maybe 1/2 a dozen deadsticks over that time. I finally bounced it the last time and had to change out a gear mount for the first time. This is a very rugged plane and easy to repair. There were no cracks at all on the carry through formers.
I would agree with the notes on flying characteristics. is best to fly it in under power. I cant the rudders in for additional drag if there is no wind. The upper speedbrake is very effective. I have the stock tanks (+ UAT) and fly for 6 minutes.
I think this is a very good value but you have to be a_decent_pilot (not a hero by any means), I think it is more about eyesight than anything and fly it with power on landing
A local guy put a P-80 on one but I don't think the plane lasted, I forgot what happened to it. It might have fluttered. I fly with an ancient P-60. It looks faster than it is because of the small size. Mine might hit 200 MPH out of a dive (I just put a JetCat speed sensor in it and it gets up in the high 190s typically).
