RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey
Wow, that's alot of changes. My thoughts on the intake change is that you will not get enough air into the fan. On the full flying tail, since there is obviously enough power in the tail of the original design, it seems like you may run into an overcontrol problem in pitch. There is lots of room in the back to do whatever you want but putting stuff into the exhaust path will only cause alot of turbulence in there and decrease thrust as well. Just my thoughts.

If you want a scale F-15, you would be better off starting with a more scale kit. The Regal Eagle is great for what it was designed, a DF trainer. Here are some pics of the last one I built. It took an awful lot of modifications to get it to look like this....and it's no where near scale.
Do not make the inlets smaller, the DF needs as much as it can get. There is not a lot of room for a stabilator mechanism. The key to a good flying RE is building it light.

well shucks, lol, id make the inlets smaller only for looks, when taxing, they close for high speed flying to keep flame outf from happenings. Do yall know, a nice scale 15 DF kit???, sorry to take this thread from the RE for a bit. Im going to try to model one after out wing jet, or squadron jet. wont be long till were getting 22's in, but i wont work on those. thanks for the comments!!!!!

Picked this up second hand, nose broken off and needs a bit of work !
Bit confussed with the tail end, wonder did it have two outlet pipes each side of the duct with half of them cut away ?
Dont have a plan or anything else

This isn't a normal Regal Eagle setup. It looks to me, and anyone else please chime in if you feel differently, that a smaller fan was used than are normally used in a Regal Eagle. The builder apparently then installed a smaller exhaust duct to fit the smaller fan. Normally a Regal Eagle, if that is what this is, uses a larger fan. Its usually set up with a duct that expands from the fan shroud to the full opening at the back of the fuse. A plastic exhaust cone provides the back of the fuse esthetically. In the current version of the kit they are plastic exhaust nozzles that come off esthetically pretty decent. I have seen older versions that have a more rectangular, sort of shape of the fuse opening. The photos you show show a much smaller exhaust duct.
Can you give us the diameter of that duct so we can get an idea what size fan and motor might have been onboard and also the wingspan so we can determine if its a full size Regal Eagle?

Yup, that sounds right for a Regal Eagle. Have not seen the aft duct like that. Should work though its alot less exhaust area than the plans use.
Anyone want to offer an opinion of performance with this mod vs the larger normal aft end?

For grass and shorter stuff that is the byron is what Bob Parkinson recommends. You will want to open a cheater hole in the bottom if it doesn't have one to get enough air into it.

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey
Hi guys. Just as a note, I am sorry to hear of the demise of the eagle in this thread. I have just retired my RE after many many years of service. Fist flight took place in Oct. 1991 flew off and on through the years sometimes weekly sometimes only a few times a year. I ran the OS .77 Byro fan and #5 Byron pipe with the pipe ring at 11.75 in. to the plug. This worked well and my setup performed flawless. I had my tanks in the wings and fixed gear. All the radio stuff was up front and ni-rods were plumbed for controls. I also used the same servos for its flight life. The aircraft only went through 2 OS .77s and the second one is still in great shape. I used Boca bearings with great success.
After all the years of where on the airframe it was getting weak and the last time I flew it I had a major malfunction of the engine mount and the fan struck the shroud and broke two blades off the fan and broke the shroud. I landed with power, it sounded like a boat. I then decided it had had enough.

Re my earlier post no. 554 I dont think it is a regal eagle, as I have just bought one S/H and it is completly different, in construction. The one above would be more scale, retract and engine mountings servo positions etc are totally different.

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey
Hi guys.
I'm thinking of building a RE sometime soon. I'm thinking of installing an OS91 + Ramtec fan. According to the plan, the fan looks like it will stick out a little so I'm thinking of increasing the height of the fuselage. Anyone else carry out the same mod?
thanks
m.

The last time I visited Bob Parkinson's site a month or so ago it said that the kits could be ordered thru hobby shops. As a pure trainer trainer, I do not think it would be a good plane. As a jet trainer lots of folks had tehir first jet flights on Regal Eagles. It seems to be pretty good at fitting that bill.

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey
Unfortunately, all that was wrong with the Eagle in this thread is that it was tail heavy.
My test flight was very similar as described, nose high, gaining very little airspeed.
I was lucky enough to get mine back home safely though.
The trick was re-balancing with the fuel tanks full, and that did the trick.
Build another one, it is a GREAT airplane!

Hi pilots,
I had a R.E. back in the 1980s. Rossi.81 , In flight mixture control , Byrojet fan and pipe. Flew very well. 115mph plus. 14lbs. with fuel . Rhom air retracts. Gear doors and rudders . Rudders were VERY effective - they were the scale size. All in all a nice aircraft.
