Gentlemen.

I have not read all of the thread so i hope what i have to say has not been mentioned before.

Many years ago in the UK there was a jet competition called Top Gun.

It ran for around 10 years and finished maybe 2 years after turbines started to appear.

Turbines did enter the comp and i believe that in the last year 1 of them won.

For the early years of course it was all ducted fan.

This meeting was 'THE' meeting of the year and competitors came from all over Europe.

The event ran as follows.

1) High speed pass over measured distance (no GPS then)
2) Low speed pass over measured distance.,
3) Vertical rolls.
4) Noise measurement.

Each category would have an outright winner, that may or may not have been the same person/plane.
But the 'Top Gun' winner would need to do well in all categories, so his total score was the highest.

The effect of the rules was such that they all interacted with each other i.e.

You want to go faster ....put a bigger engine in....but that put the weight up....that screws your low speed etc.

Power to weight and drag effect vertical performance and rolls.

And just slapping a bigger engine in makes more noise...etc...etc.

This formula worked really well and produces some high speeds with DF of over 250mph and low speed passes of 16mph.

It made an interesting competition with no one knowing who was the overall winner until the end.

It was great fun and sadly missed.

Public was allowed and flocked to it in the 1000's. It was stopped because it just became too big for a small model club to handle.

Maybe the above is food for thought......?

Pauls post is actually a great idea and a good point. As I can well imagine with simple rules of just fastest wins it would take no time at all for the wealthiest person with the most time on his/her hands to break Mach 1 with a model. Most great competitions have eventually had to strike the balance between no holds barred all out speed/duration and making it open and competitive to more than just the very elite (F5B, F3A, F3J, Formula 1 !, etc etc).

Suunds like a great event though, i would certainly travel the distance to see it!

It will happen, stay tuned ! The only thing that stopped it was the Burn Ban in Texas.

Now Butch, don't take the cheap shots.
It's been all over everywhere that Rei Gonzales of RAM fame flew his Bandit at something like 280 mph in Spain years ago.
The AMA will tell you that the speed limit is 200, not the record.
Current "records" are all from other countries.

There are rumors of someone flying over 360 mph. I would tell you who but I would have to kill you! Or he would kill me for telling. Butch

As far as I am aware, the Official world record for ‘Guinness book of Wold records’ is. 254.5 mph (average of both directions).

[link]http://www.amtjets.com/[/link]

Look for the Blue speed record button on the left hand side of the page.

2 listed 1998 and 1999.

All info is available on equipment used.
If you are going to do it properly and have it acknowledged then you really have to involve the Guinness World Records people!

i tried to contact GWR few years ago they responded that their where not interested anymore to cover a modelplane speed record..
we measured our delta to about 570 KMH
there was about a 100 kmh difference between flying with 15 degrees or 25 degrees...
there still a few video,s around somewhere..
there is even a guy from germany who flew his delta i think even faster , they where flying this in poland (no speed regulations)

As far as I know that the fastest documented speed by a r/c airplane in the USA is 300 mph.........in a slope soarer glider!

some jets can be 100 mph faster than this.
