Default Alfa F-86 Sabre

Just got mine in the mail today, with a Mega motor and all the trimmings...what a neat little bird! Anybody else have one?

Yup! Just keep it in the car and fly anywhere...
I got the Mega motor, not sure if it is the hottest out there, or how it compares to the Himaxx. I do know the prefabrication on this plane is pretty staggering...

Hey ET,

I have one and it is awesome i know Adil has a mig and Don has both the mig and the f86 we were doing some dog fighting at the maine jet rally and had a blast. I have the himax 2015-5400 and I tached it at 45k rpm I also tried the castle creations 6k motor and got 51k rpm thats just the fan unit no ducting, by the way good idea to do the extra duct at the rear. The mig is a little faster or about the same but the F-86 has better vertical. Iuse the 1570mah or 1550 tanic and you will get around 10 minutes of flight.

I also use the Castle creations ESC. I flew this originally with the MP Jet
motor. not very fast. with the Himax, it has more zip, and is easy to
hand launch.

I have a new fan and motor coming now. mine after about 25 flights is
getting a little out of balance, and is noisy. I may also bump up my battery
pack.

I also added a piece of clear lexan under the upper section, just below the tail
feathers as noted in above post. it smooths out the exit air considerably

After having built 2 F-86's and 7 Mig's, have tried 4 different motors and by far the best is the Hi-Max 2025 5300. CC 25 amp ECS, with the Kokam 2000 20 C battery. Clocked on the radar gun at 97 mph. No matter what you do make sure you open up the rear of the motor housing as to allow air flow around the motor. Also used a dremel with a small tapered stone to open four inlet ducts at the front of the motor housing. Do it between the stator vanes. have burned up 3 motors ( not the Hi-Max ) before this was done. Can run full throttle for 10 plus minutes and the battery and motor are just barely warm to the touch. The Mig, IMHO, is the better flyer. Can take off from grass, tar and now the snow with no problem where the Saber's wing hard points dig in and will not allow this. Both are great fun to fly and I would recommend either to anyone that wants to try an EDF. Good luck with yours.

Fantastic!

How fast do you estimate on the MPjets motor?

And is access to the fan an issue, if I want to swap out to the Himaxx later? Besides getting the fan rotor back off, will there be a problem doing this?

using the MP motor ET is slow. I really cant give you a number as I never
radared it. but, when you hand launch it, it barely wants to fly. with it, it will not
ROG.

with the Himax, hand launching is easy, and she comes up on step pretty quick.

when I removed my MP motor, I replaced the fan and all. getting the fan off
was a problem, so I just bought a new one with the Himax motor

Use the prop adapter that you get with the Hi-Max motors instead of that small aluminum adapter that comes with the kit. You are suppose to glue it on, it does not center well. If you use the bolt on prop adapter it centers perfectly and to remove the fan is as easy as taking off the nut on the front side.

Hey P47dman can you post a pic how you mod the prop adapter? and which other motors have you tried? did you try the mega 16/7/3? or the castle creations 6k or 8k motors?

Model Motors 12/15/3 don't quote me on the #'s, that one was over a year ago and I'm getting old. One of the Great Planes " Ammo " motors did not even make it one flight. You know something is wrong when you are flying and you see exhaust smoke coming out of your EDF.
Pics are not the best, but you'll get the idea. You do need to chuck up the part in a drill and touch it to a belt sander to make it fit inside the rotor, don't take much off. I also use a star washer inside to give it good bite. Don't want the fan to slip on the shaft. this mod will make it center perfect in the housing. Makes it easy to swap out motors, I kept breaking the adapter that comes with the kit. With whatever method you use, just make sure you have air flow over the motor.

Thanks for the pics P47dman, how far back does the fan sit back in the unit using this method and did you use the nose cone over the prop hub?

Hey ET i heard many good things about the mega 16/7/4 or /3 even thow i havent tried one yet i do however have the himax 2015-5400 and the 2025-5300 and i opted for the 2015-5400 because it is less in weight, i can use the smaller and less weighted 1500mah batteries rather than the 2000mah batteries and i can get a full 10 min of flight at full power. However with the mega motor it would be tougher to get the airflow to cool it since its larger in diameter and you have to dremel the case to get it to fit flush. If you go with the himax you can even get a heat sink around it with some mod. I belive the max rpm on the mega is around 45k, the 2015-5400 with just the fan unit will spin at 45k rpm as i stated in above thread i also just recently tried the castle creations 6k motor which is actually smaller than the himax by small margin and I get tach reading of 51k rpm wow havent tried it in the plane thow. I think i will put it in a mig.

I would just start with the Himax. the MPjet isOK, but it just doesnt have the zip,
or any vertical performance.

I would also get at least a 20 amp ESC, min. I use the 25 amp. my packs
are warm (135 degrees) after a 6-7 minute run. the ESC isnt even hot at all.

The fan sits back into the housing 1/8" or so. It is not exposed. Yes you can use the nose cone, depending on the prop adapter you use you might have to open the very tip of it to clear. If I remember correctly the MP Jet adapter fit perfect with no mods.

Mine had a 16/7/4 mega motor with cc25 esc and a 2000 lipo
top speed on the radar gun was 105mph then the fan unit went bang and fell out in bits and pieces
have just converted it to a VASA 65 fan unit same motor but a bigger lipo to sustain the voltage
will let you know how it goes

Yes a vasa65 it just drops in and is epoxied to the rear former
front induction liner has to be modified to fit the bigger housing and
a new rear duct has to be made for the unit.
I would think with just a slight bit of modification the 70mm fan would fit
now whether the foam fus will stand up to it is anyones guess
The best one to modify is the Mig super smooth to fly and very fast with the vasa65 setup
over 115 mph on the radar gun.
Easiest to mod is the Huck but not so nice to fly

regards
Brian

ps before you say anything about the decals on the Huck i did`nt build it

Guys....lots of info on both models in the Electric Jets forum...gotta go back quite a ways. I've an Alfa MiG w/ the Phoenix 25 and HiMax 2025-5300. Great combo, seems long lasting; great jet practice model/love it. Check out e-flightline.com, they have MiG/2025/Ph25 for $258 shipped; just need battery (I Use the TP 2100s...need that for balance in the MiG) Rx, and I use two JR micro digitals. Makes the plane fly on rails; great ROGs, etc., three 7-8 minute flights/battery. All stays cool. Much prefer the MIG.....more robust looks better w/ the large intake flies better, ROGs, but more work to build.

The '6K' CC motors? What are the specs, exact model number. I get 42K w/ the 2025, balanced fan, but 51K w/ the CC? Sounds terrific and we all want a little more...

All great stuff!
I was reading the instructions, and how critical the fan balance and such is, so I think I will just order up the Himaxx now, I think trying to swap motors later may lead to balance and install problems.
I have the TP1320 3s pack, and the Jeti 12 controller...should work okay with the Himax?
