One of the biggest mistakes made when spraying any of the aluminum paints, is thinking you can do it well with anything less than a very high end paint gun. I don't care what paint you spray, if it doesn't atomize the paint fine enough and allow it to flow out dead smooth, the BEST paints will look like nothing more than paint when they have an orange peel to them. Even if you sand and polish the clear, the paint itself will reflect the orange peel and look like nothing more than shiny paint. This requires patience, and skill. You need to spray at the right temps, using the right air pressure, and the right paint reducers and amounts. If you are using a horror freight gun, or anything less than a top line gun, results will be marginal. I'm not saying this to sound like a paint snob, I'm saying it because it's true. Real metal doesn't have orange peel, if you are spraying a reflective paint and there is orange peel in it, it is going to look like paint and there is nothing you can do about it. There is a reason professional painters use Sata and Iwata paint guns, it's not because we like the name, it's because they decrease the work load in the final finishing department. There are extremely fine silver paints out there that will look very much like aluminum, not a high polished aluminum, but for something like the blue tail, with a little weathering and airbrushing it would be hard to tell that it was paint instead of metal. Again though, this requires good equipment, a good understanding of how paint works, skill, and some luck.

Mark H. Do you have a part number for that paint on the F-89? Did Ralle ever do a write up on this paint?

Jeremy, it would be fantastic if you could lay out a mini tutorial on these "metallic" paints (or whatever the proper terminology is), things like BVM metalcote, Ralles paint, etc........maybe these silver nitrate systems like Spectrachrome......etc etc.

Thanks

Interesting stuff. The technique that uses Rustoleum is intriguing but I have never had any luck with their paints. They take forever to dry(even if you think they are dry, they are not and can take 2 weeks to dry fully). They have both "oil modified" alkyd resins which I guess is their enamel line and acrylic resins and I am not sure how compatible all of their paints are. Apparently the oil plays a large role in the drying time as does temperature... doesnt seem like Rustoleum would be a great choice to use in the winter time based on what I have read.

The paint can be bought direct from Ralle , Taylor made decals its called Platanum I think, he pre- mixes it in a ready to spray bottle and bingo it works for me, I do use good spray gear though:-) and clean dry air, so important.
Regards.

Last year I used this metallic paint on the wings and belly of my Super Connie model, if you like it, it's Krylon's Chrome metallic spray bomb...

The paint that Mark H is referring to from Tailor Made Decals is Lesonal Porsche Platinum. Lesonal branded paints are only available in certain countries but they belong to a much larger group, for instance in the UK the same paint is available from the Sikkens brand, called Argentum. Sikkens is part of Akzo Nobel so the paint may be available in other countries under yet another name from the local subsidiary of Akzo Nobel. I used Sikkens Argentum on my F-100 that was on the cover of RCJI a couple of years ago. These paints are made specially to replicate aluminium for example on car wheels, custom cars etc so they are very realistic but the black base and the top clear coats must be done very well otherwise it looks like toy silver paint with clear coats instead of sheet metal! As Mark and LGM have said, if you think you can do it with cheap airbrushes in a poor environment with bad technique you will waste a lot of money. These specialised paints are rather expensive, 4 years ago Sikkens Argentum list price was £120 per litre though I was given a discount that brought it down to £80/litre !! The F-100 used 1/2 litre.
