Realistic Aluminum paint?
Hey all, i am doing a scale panther project and wanted to do the bluetail fly this go-around. Any ideas, besides BVM METAL KOTE, as to which aluminum paint is pretty good and realistic looking, for an airbrush. I have only used the krylon spray on the leading edges of my first panther, and it was pretty good, but i need to spray the first 2/3 or so of the fuse and all the wings in alum finish, so krylon is out. Any feedback would be good and appreciated. Thanks, nick

RE: Realistic Aluminum paint?
I personally have never heard of anyone with a metal finish having any additional problems with static electricity over what painted models have, so that should not be a consideration.
The most realistic metal finish is either FliteMetal or you can actually get the plane plated:

RE: Realistic Aluminum paint?
I cannot suggest any aluminum paint better than BVM's metal Kote. All others rub off when handled and change colors when clear coated. I have used " Bright Silver Metalic " by Imron, looks good, will not rub off, but not true aluminum look. Also very, very spendy. But I do like to use the alumnum tape. Have done 7 over the years now with no problems what so ever. The only thing is you must fly PCM and the antenna needs to come out of the aluminum skin. Good luck and make sure we all see pics when done.

How about
http://www.alclad2.com
but it requires a smooth gloss black undercoat, and then protective clear coats like BVM metal kote does, so not much advantage apart from coming in smaller cheaper bottles.

RE: Realistic Aluminum paint?
I have a whole article in Jet power magazine that describes the painting process of the "Blue tail fly" April-june 2004 issue. issue# 1610-014x. This includes the paints that were used.

RE: Realistic Aluminum paint?
With no offense to anyone, I have NEVER seen ANY aluminum paint, even Metal-kote, that really looked anything like aluminum.
Maybe go for tape instead. I saw on Dino DiGeorgio's site, I think meisterscale.com the other day that he was selling the tape for much, much less than Flite-metal.
Also...not sure, but maybe the Blue-Tail fly was actually PAINTED silver, not natural metal? Big difference...

you can try ghost chrome from Alsa. kinda hard to work with and fairly $$$$$$ but it does look like alumunum.

RE: Realistic Aluminum paint?
Nick, the aluminum tape is actually very easy to put on, I have done a BVM F-86 in less than a week, with rivets. At first you do waste a bit but after you get the hang of it, it goes pretty fast. Much easier than painting an aircraft, no filling pin holes, no primer, no clear coat. I have now found stuff that is .0015 thick, very light. I still use the .005 thick tape in fillets or anywhere you need to stretch it a bit. I would suggest giving it a try. You will like the results much better than anything else out there. You can purchase the tape in 1/2" to 14" wide rolls, 60 yards long. I like the stuff without the backing paper, but have used both. Also use the .012 thick tape to apply panels and hatches, this gives it just a bit of raised effect. My first one was a Yellow P-47 that I did back in 1995. I have never had a piece peel off, gas has never gotten under the tape. One nice thing is that if you get a ding, you just make a hatch to cover it with and you never see it again. If you want to give it a go , email me and I can send you a couple places to purchase the tape

All I can say about Metal Kote II is that it is, and looks just like, what it is...silver paint. Good silver paint, but still just silver paint.
Flite Metal, the various tapes, versus silver paint? Apples and oranges. You can't even compare. The tape looks SOOOO much better.

www.aero-accessories.com has the tape...
There are some real experts around here on the application of Flite-metal, maybe some of them can chime in...

RE: Realistic Aluminum paint?
E.T. The paint used in the article actually does have aluminium particles in it !! Normal metallic paint utilizes glittering metallic particles , not aluminium. It is completely different. Look it up

RE: Realistic Aluminum paint?
I still don't understand...lots of silver paint uses aluminum in it...including plain old aluminum dope, which, in my opinion, actually still looks the best of the paints. Excepting that very exotic and expensive system by Adza.
I just think flite-metal looks SOOO much better.
PS I did see that article in Jet Power, it was nicely done, but still looked like a painted model to me.
But look at something liek Joe Grice's F-100. It simply looks like metal. Because it IS metal.

I would also suggest using Alclad2 for metal representation, i have used this paint on my plastic models and it worked pretty good for me and i would use same on RC Jets also....
