More Scale jet gear plugs
These are gear sets that im working on for future projects. I thought Id post a few PRE-DETAIL pics for feedback. additionally, to get some advice on a small issue. this issue is the boltheads on the wheels. on my gears, you see them represented simply as holes at this point. id rather not try to fabricate the bolts at such a small size.(just under 3/16) but i dont think they make these real bolts in the small size i need. I remember that SDcrashmaster used www.microfasteners.com for some of his projects, but they said they didnt have the 12-16 corner boltheads I need. If I must, then ill fabricate a few and recast them, but Im hoping other detailers on this forum may have other ideas????
This first set is F-14 gear

WOW those are really nice. Sorry I can not offer you any advise on those bolts. I have a set of wax gear that I need to get cast in aluminum, do you know where I might be able to get this done. How are you going to cast your gear. thanks john

And for once, it isn't me
The bolts I use from Micro Fasteners are .090, .080 & .072. Don't know what the precise measurements of the heads are, but any smaller you'd be hard pressed to see flat sides.
Nice, nice work.

Hi guys.
I'm doing some work on an F-4 gear at the moment. How do you go about aluminum casting them? I was going about having them made from stock aluminum on a 5-axis CNC mill, but if there are easier ways i'd be glad to hear about them.
Also, how much do you have to calculate pricewise for a cast part?
Thanks
Hank

Thanx 2 all,
Jedi, Im not sure where you would go to get the casting done, but my suggestion is to experiment with a sandcasting product called petrobond. Its oil based foundry sand, is very forgiving of begginers mistakes and gives relatively smooth surfaced castings. Here is a link. http://budgetcastingsupply.com/Jupit...ndry_Sand.html
Hi Nick and john, I am working on the final gear plugs of this set, which will be for 1/6th scale f-16, which wont fit adjets. The A-7 gear done Truely scale would really set off your already impressive project, but Im sure you will be flying before im able to take on anything new.
DelGato, no prolem with your english man, but these F-15 arent the same scale as your jet, and will actually be funtional anyway, as opposed to being something that would just slide over an existing gear.
Gordon Your correct, the bolts need not be functional, just accurate looking. to me, these type of details place a project over the top. but anyway, come to think of it, I think you're right about the model railroad companies! I will have to check those resources. thanx for the idea.
Paul.......I might be a little sick....But YOU.. may need a little counseling! LOL! those numbers you mentioned, are they shank length, or head width? with all the products that company has available, its amazing how weak thier graphical references are. thier website is completely useless for me.
doing these gear, Ive noticed the need again and again for micro boltheads.
Hank, Im no expert, but in my opinion, and with my experiments, ive noticed that certain parts will best benefit by cnc, some by casting, some, by hand tooling. additionally the casting process need not all be aluminum as long as those parts are non-stressed. resin filled with atomized aluminum powder at a 60-40 ratio remains pourable in molds yet gives approximate strength of zinc casting, but in a cold cast process. btw, we have a large scale phantom in the works as well, pm me, maybe we can xchange some ideas?

THOSE ARE AWESOME!!!! Can you do an AD F-16 sized pair scale, and without a 2000.00 dollar price tag? I live right down the alley from you! nick

If you wanna dance, you gotta pay the piper. For the work that goes into them, $2K is a bargain.

RE: More Scale jet gear plugs
Amen to that,Paul! it's not so easy, which is why 90% of the jets you see, only have standoff scale gear. despite being called scale.
Hi Terry, the fulcrum gear is 1/6th scale.
Hank, here are a couple of pics of our phantom plug on hold now, due to a temporary switch to a higher priority project. the panels, screws and rivets havent been started yet, but measurements for the cockpits and gears are done. Sorry about the quality of the shots, the sheer size makes it difficult to shoot in close quarters.I would love to see some of your phantom as well, I expect that with your access to an f-4f, it will be wickedly detailed.

What is the "sheer size" of it? :-)
Sorry, no pictures of my project yet, it's just beginning to come to life in CAD. I'll start a thread when the time comes.
Cheers

Ok, I thought you were alot farther along on your project. the size of this phantom is just over 120 inches not including the pitot. tube.

Nope, just some drawing, calculating and putting together some riggs for functional testing. Will be at least 1 year to get the prototype airborne.
Over 120"? That would make it 1/6ish scale.....holy cow and i thought we were totally insane. :-). You do have a truck to get it to the field, don't ya? ;-)

ya, no throwing this one in the back seat.
for those requesting pics of the falcon gear, ill post a couple pics in about 6 days. Im doing some gear/hub angle adjustments now.

RE: More Scale jet gear plugs
after an exhaustive search, for this bolt type in the size i needed, (12 point hollow head). i realize that i would have to have to model it. after a few tries here is the result. also, i came across an old quick and dirty draft of the f-18 gear i did to work out the geometry, I thought id post it in case it may be useful to someone. the f18 plugs are again pre-detailing. and finally here are more recent f-16 gear plugs, the final of the batch assignment. as always, feedback greatly appreciated.
