Which turbine for a Boomerang XL?
Need to decide between these engines. I can get the PST for 2895 or the Simjet for 3000. How do these engines compare? Spool up times? I see on the PST site they say the engine takes 5 secs to go from idle to 100%. How does this compare to the Simjet?

I'm not sure your poll works. I wasn't abel to vote.
Anyway. The new SimJet 3000 will be at full power in about 2,5 seconds. Also, take a look at the fuel economy if you have a chance to compare them. I do not know the PST, but I'm sure it's agood engine too.

RE: Which turbine for a Boomerang XL?
Started mine today for the last (only) test. As this thread is a engine question, I`d like to say I have some worries to give full throttle on mine..
Let me put it this way. A full calibration run was performed today, and every time I start this engine, I`m overwhealmed about the thrust.
Had a "hard" time to hold it with one hand, and I guess my neighbours are well satisfied today... [:-]
A gallon is burned, and systems are go, exept from my brand new JetTronic kerosene valve.. Leaks as a toilet on overtime.. I guess Horst is cind enough to give me another one...
The engine is a Frankturbine 70/16, and yes I woted for "others"[>:]
If anyone have seen the German SR 71, four meters long, this is the same engine as this is equipped with..
But anything will do, as long as it developes at least 10 kilo 22 Lbs.
Can fly well with 8 kilos, but plan ahead, and do it once and for all, meaning do not take this very large model with a engine size you almost sertainly know will be replaced.
So when I`m back in 3 weeks, I plan to do some stick-time....
About all the ARF`s in jets I`ve seen yet, this model is about the top 3. (!)
If I had a MZ 14 channel Futaba, I could do all I have on mine..
Now, it`s a matter of needs..[8D]

RE: Which turbine for a Boomerang XL?
Will a 18.7 lbs thrust turbine fly this XL? I have the old Simjet 85 flying on my Kangaroo and thought of buying the XL for every sunday flying with it. Any suggestions?
Thank you.
Henry

I fly my Boomer XL with an AMT 180, putting out between 18 and 20 pounds of thrust. The XL takes off with half flaps in 200 feet of hard runway.
I added 700 grams of lead for ballast, the dry weight is 29 pounds. I had the plane ready to fly in 6 days, 4 nights after work plus Saturday and Sunday, about 28 hours.
The Boomer is very light on the sticks, everyone who flys my plane is amazed how nicely it flys and lands. I am using the wire legs as "training wheels" then I will install Robart struts.

RE: Which turbine for a Boomerang XL?
I can back John up on His story. He let me fly his Boomer at Ky Jet meet and I was suprised how well it flew with only 18# 180 on it. Top speed was just as good as with other turbines,I don't this this airframe will go much faster anyway. We flew at 60 to 80 % power and didn't have any problem with many acrobatic maneuvers. I think It's a great combo . Scott

Thank you John and S Harris,
I will then proceed to order the XL then.
Best regards
Henry

I am flying mine with Jetcat P-80! It flies with good authority. Take off in less than 200ft with no flaps. Verticals are a bit limited at first but after burn some fuel she go up very well. Really is a confortable jet to fly with any 20 pound class turbine. I really enjoy mine with that power. But if I want unlimited fun then I will need to change to a bigger class. My 2 cents.

RE: Which turbine for a Boomerang XL?
I have the PST 1300R in my Big Boomer and it does not spool up as fast as some other turbines, but hauls all the fuel I want to put on board. I have the McMasters 4 liter Nalgene jug and two 20 oz smoke tanks and it flys for 9 plus minutes. It will take off in less than 200 ft but has limited vertical due to the heavy fuel load. But as soon as I burn off half of the fuel and half of the smoke, then it has unlimited vertical. I went to the Maple Flag Jet meet a couple of weeks ago and got it to hover in the 10 to 12 knot headwind. With all that fuel, it almost acts like an anchor. When it finally stalled, it just nosed over with no bad tendencies. What a great airframe. I love to fly the Big Boomer.

Maybe for 18-20 lbs thrust installation, install fix gear to reduce the weight for slightly improved performance? Then again, the drag from the gear will surface. Can't have the best of both world, I guess.
