Default Attack of the Clones (Hawk's that is)

O.K. this have beeen beaten to death. With all the hype of the Eletric Vio Fa, Here is my first attempt at a Decently powered EDF Jet. Now I don't know exactly how many copies of the JHH hawk are out there but I seen at least three or four Different versions. Although all still use the JHH stickers, all the clones are not JHH aproved or JHH gets no royalties.

Day one, Unpack everything, trim things out and start applying Aeropoxy all over the Glue joints. All of the glue joints look like they where done with Hot Glue, so two bottles of Aeropoxy where used to reinforce the entire plane. Since Sonnich (SNJ or SJN) did a full review, this is just a quickie.

Default RE: Attack of the Clones

Well none of the Aileron covers fit, so I had to make new ones. One of the first things I did was to cut out a location on the fin for the rudder servo. Since most of my building has to take place in the storage where I have my planes (House is not done yet) my tools are limited. In this case most of the cutting is done with Exacto knife Painful, slow and easy to slip.

Since I want to rudder and fin to be strong. I am adding two pieces of spruce to stiffen it up.

Day two. Glue the wings together, put in some JR DS 9411 for Flaps, Put in some JR DS 3421 for Ailerons. Added some grease to the hinges and Aeropoxied them on to the Ailerons and Flaps. I added a third hinge to the Flaps and to the rudder since they each only had two each. Here is a picture of the power system, i am still waiting for the Speed controler to show up. A Castle Creations Phoenix 110. Also attached is a picture of the struts. Now on the fourth picture is some of the hardware that comes with the kit. I HAVE no Clue as to what the piece with the Arrow does. I have trown away most of the stuff that came with the kit and be WARNED some of the kits including mine had no instructions. I like to thank Robert at EJF.COM for helping me get most to the stuff for the plane. (Fan, Motor, ESC and struts so far).

The piece with the arrow pointing towards it is the tuned pipe mount, not that it worked as designed but that's what it was

What size EDF you going to use it? 90mm or 120mm? power? Looks like a very interesting project.
Clones? You knew copies exist in every where, what can we do?

Scuze me? "Attack of the Clones" was MY thread title. Do I get any royalties or credit from this knockoff thread? Nope.
Hope you have good attorneys. How big is this new house? Will I like it, after my lawyers get done chewing every scrap of meat off your bones?

Nice LG struts, what brand are they? Eurokit?

How did you like the wheel well, is it big enough?

Someday I may just finish mine. Would like to see what you do with the elevator linkeage, which is kinda crappy the way it is out of the box.

Dear Turbulence,

I am curious about the Eurokit gear you are using. I used Eurokit for the mains but found it not suitable for the nose. The bolt that holds the spring kept binding against the retract cylinder. How did you overcome this problem. Also. the nose wheel required quite a short strut. I could barely trim the Eurokit one short enough to work.

Thanks,

Not only does the nose strut need to be short but if the strut has any angle in it like the Euro Kits it wont fit all the way into the retract bay. The cylinder isnt mounted up high enough into the nose to keep the wheel inside. The only way to do it is with a straight strut, at least thats how it is with my Hawk.

Sorry, I have no clue. My first question was if they where from Eurokit, Robert at EJF.COM was going to build a plane like mine, so I figure I get in and start the same project. I asked him to get me a set of whatever he was getting for himself, whne he sent me a picture and a price, I asked him to get me two sets. A main one and then a spare set for Back ups. They where somewhere in the range of $50-65 for a set of three so I thought it was wise to get two. I hope to be able to mount the nose gear High so it can hide in the wheel well but mainly I am going to use a BVM nose gear so the cylinder thing will not affect my Install.

Has anyone flown this Plane? What CG and control Throws where used?

Which straight strut did you use? I tried a robart and ended up 1/2 inch too long. I would have had to use a 1 1/2 inch wheel.

Thanks,

If I remember correctly the nose gear well is not cut out as delivered? You might consider making the nose unit retract conventionally - to the rear. That's what I eventually wound up doing with mine...

I'll get you the CG and what not, not a big deal. Throws are elevator - ALL you can get with a nuetral incidence of -3, aileron about a 1/2" each way - they are not overly powerful so don't worry about that. Flaps - no more than 15 degrees or you can run out of up elevator on landing.

Only a couple of things done to it on Monday. Here are some shot of the butchered up nose gear former to make the BVM nose gear to fit. That' the original former and it I can cut it with and exacto, then it's crap, so it will have to go. I will have to make a bew design for it. I have some spare T-33 nose gear formers maybe I will just place that in there I am. not tryingg to make it heavy like a turbine bird, but I want it to be able to land without a problem. I saw a picture of the intall Chris did on his and it looked like he moved everything foward to get a decent CG without trying to add lead (Chris did you have to add lead?)

Default RE: Attack of the Clones

Someone asked me about the Elevator set up. My had four pieces of wood that are to be used as bushings or something. I am problably going to trow them out and use two brass bushing in there. One to support the actual elevator arms and one to support the elevator machanism. Mine elevator machanism has two hex screws to hold each elevator rod. I just inserted a 1 inch 4-40 screw throught the middle for use as a control rod. Maybe a longer would be nicer, but that is what I had laying around already. Anyway Ailerosn are in and adjusted, I made sure I get at least 3/4 inch travel on each, they are programed into the radion. Flaps are adjusted and programed into the radio, Although I really don't think I will use them much, they have a almost two inch travel. Other than that, just started work in the canopy. Not going to get a chance to do anything on it today, so well see what shows up tomorrow.

No, no lead needed. I moved the nose gear forward and made it retract to the rear for other reasons - so I could use a large wheel for grass ops and allow it to retract inside the fuselage.

Let's be clear here - you are building an electric There is no reason to worry about nose weight! #1, move the batteries to balance, #2 - there is not a 12 ounce tuned pipe back in the tail. In fact, if you would like to put you batteries in the nose area at the inlet V you would need to move the fan back so it's front edge is about even with the TE of the wing. Otherwise plan on a pack on each side of the fan and one in the nose.

O.K. back to work. I did not get a chance to post stuff all week. Tuesday I had to take care of a little driving infraction that cot me all day, Wednesday the kids just have way too much going on so Let's pick up on Thrsday. So far I spend about 4 hours a day on it for Four days (including Thursday and Friday) take into consideration that if you have power tools available it will go a little quicker.

So we start off on Thursday with glassing the wings, since I have to wait for glue to dry, then I start cutting the vents on the hatch (most likely location for ESC since fresh air will try to keep it cooler), then since glues is not dr yet, Paint some parts on the plane. No we have glue and paint waiting to dry, why not work on the elevator and Rudder mounts. Aeropoxy the parts and now I have more waiting to do.

So on Thursday it was all about trying to get something done with the elevator and nose gear. I had to file some of the OD of the strut to make it fit into the strut, but it fianlly gave in. I van not cut it shorter yet, I have to wait until I can mount it on the plane to measure the length. I aslo added apiece of light ply at the nose of the canopy opening (under the fuse) to hold the canopy in tight after I place two pins on it.

Well now on to Friday's work. It was all about getting the nose gear to fit. First picture you can see the evolution of the nose gear mount. N#1 is the original mount and then #2-4 in the work done. (when was the last time you cut ply with an EXACTO, Pain the ***** and fingers too) So then I added one more vertical spar on the rear part of the nose and then Aeropxied the entire thing. I got creative (lazy while the glue dried) and just spryed some more Red paint insisde the Fuselage. I am down to my last retract mount I had purchased, so I need to find this guy again. D R lazer works, he was here on RCU, well the package has his number, I will call him for more.

Last ones for now. Here are two more of the nose gear mount and then just one more of the inside of the plane, with the retract mount. Up for Monday is a the Elevator servo and mount and fish off the rudder servo and mount. Then Tuesday will be for the retracts on the wing and nose gear servo. The basic install will be done and just need to concentrate on the EDF stuff.

Did yours come with a manua? I got a copy of a manual that I think might have been done by JHH now JHI and I still have questions about the correct CG. Chris True has two I beleive so I will wait for him to chime in. Also when he gets a chance I am sure he will chime in about the power this fan puts out. I beleive he is playing with a Lehner (spelling ?) 2230 motor while I have a 2250, next time I will go for the gusto and get a 2280.

Pictures for tomorrow. I have the nose gear in and servo for steering, Got the rudder servo all hooked up, started the wiring of servo extensions and could not get any of the main gear to work. the retract mount is TOO NARROW for any of the Robarts I have, so now I need to Spring Air Mains. Anyone got a set that they like to part with?
