SM BAE HAWK gear doors
Hi guys,
Anyone has nice closeup pictures of the gear door set up for the SM Hawk? Mine is almost ready to go and I'll probably be initially flying around without the doors but eventually like to add them. I'm particularly interested in how you guys did the outer main doors (attachment to the wing and strut?)
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - Adil

Adil. I just ordered a set of gear door hinges from dreamworks. should have them in a few days. I hope these will work on my SM Hawk

RE: SM BAE HAWK gear doors
Here's how I did mine and didnt like it after the fact. I used offset door hinges on the main doors and mounted the strut doors to the strut. Next time I will use Robart piano hinges on the mains. When the struts extends the door hits the wing/retract if you dont cut the gap. Havent looked at a solution to this problem as I crashed the jet on the test flight due to wing flutter.

A few close up pics of the way the main door cyls are installed under the intakes would be nice as well. I will be doing the split nose gear doors too. Pics would be fantastic.

RE: SM BAE HAWK gear doors
First flight, took off and came around at about half throttle.. not fast at all. Both wings went wild...looked like a bird. Slowed down to get the flutter to stop and it eventually rolled over and died. When the wreckage was inspected both aileron mounts had been torn from the wing, pushrods bent. Servos were 9411s. The servos were not damaged beyond stripped gears.

Aileron mount? Or aileron servo mount? could it be an error in gluing the servo mounts to the wing? I just finished this part yesterday and made sure I used extra glue

RE: SM BAE HAWK gear doors
Hi Tom and others,
Thanks a lot. This is tremendous help. I had the main and the nose figured out but just wanted to see how others did the outer mains. I think I'm going to do just as the pictures show above
Tom, Sorry to hear about your mishap. I was a little concerned about the servo mounts etc. as there is some flex in the skins etc. so I did go ahead and beefed them up a bit.
I have test flown a couple of these for some friends and liked the flying so much, decided to get one as well. One of the planes was powered by RAM1000 with gear doors and the other with a P-80 without gear doors. Apart from some veritcals etc. the planes flew identical (much to my surprise).
Mine is powered by a Jet Central (Artes) Super Eagle but I'm sure, full throttle will hardly be required
I may be able to put mine in the air this weekend (If I can spend 4-5 hours on it to finish final rigging) so I'll let you know how it goes. I'll post some pictures either way over the weekend. I did some dressing up I have functional light in the nose and the pitot / probe. I also went ahead and added some details to the wings like the fences (small vertical pieces) not sure what they are called but look like vortex generators ?? As well as a fully detailed cockpit....
Regards,
Adil

RE: SM BAE HAWK gear doors
I believe you are correct. Typically, the instructions show that you glue the servo blocks to the (top) wing skin. I personally feel that there is a lot of spacing between the wing ribs and such and hence a little skin-flex so I added some vertical wood webbing between the two skins (top and bottom) around the servo cutout area to make it sturdy. In SM defence however, they do mention in the manual to beef up the opening for exactly the same reason.
I'm not sure what the procedure / problem happened in Tom's situation so I'll let him comment on that.

Adil

RE: SM BAE HAWK gear doors
I have mounted my servos ON the wing..rather than the covers which could be rather flimsy. The wings do have some flex, but not as much as the covers for sure.

RE: SM BAE HAWK gear doors
Mine was mounted on the upper wing skin as they show. The wing skins are too flexible. The next time I will cut out a larger servo cover so I can access the area better. Then I will put a ply doubler on the top of the wing then use 1/4 balsa to form a servo box that will be joined on the top and bottom of the wing skins. The box will be longer fore and aft to help spread the load. After the area is reinforced as described then BVM aileron servo mounts or something like them will be used to mount the servos. The only way you can do this is to enlarge the opening but this is minor in comparison with stuffing the remains in the garbage as I did.

Hello im Posting for my friend

Here are some shots on how he did his doors.
The rod to open the main door uses a piano wire in a open clip.

Hi Duke, In the second pic above, what kind of hinge is used to secure the strut door to the fuse? Looks like a metal door hinge used on regular doors??

Hi Duke and guys,
Thanks for the pictures - I like the nelson hinge method a lot since it lessen the gaps between the doors and the fuse.
Here is the link for anyone else wondering about nelson ...
