Reinstall complete, back to the field. It has been a while since the last flight, so it was a bit like a new maiden flight. Joel was there to make sure I didn't screw things up too badly. All the previous settings and trims were good, and it is still a ton of fun to fly. Visibility is much improved, and the yellow/red scheme is easy for me to see.

Thanks to the Sequin gang for support along the way, and thanks to everyone for following the thread and posting kind comments.

For those scratch builders out there, I'll post the numbers for the plane below.

I'm very pleased with the performance of the plane. The numbers for the design are "plane vanilla", which is probably the reason it performs well. The biggest unknown for me was the engine mounting and ducting design. However, the airframe stays quite cool (even with the 120 size motor), the motor seems to be getting adequate air, and drag isn't too bad judging from the speed of the airframe. The only thing I'd change in the design is to adjust the stab incidence slightly because it originally took 5 clicks of up trim for straight and level flight.

I know I like to scavenge for design data from other builders, so I thought I'd post it here for those who are interested in this kind of arcane stuff.

Length: 71 in.
Wingspan: 62 in.
Wing area: 900 in. sq.
Wing dihedral: 2.0 degrees
Wing washout: 1.5 degrees
Stab anhedral: -12.0 degrees
Wing and stab airfoil: NACA 0012
Incidences:
Fuse bottom: 0.0 degrees
Wing @ root: +1.3 degrees
Stab @ root: +.75 degrees (too much, should probably be about .5 degrees)
Motor downthrust angle: 9.0 degrees
Flap angle deployed: 33 degrees
CG: 25% MAC with full UAT
Main landing gear placement: 1.6" behind cg

The attached image is very close to the final configuration.

Once again, thanks to everyone for the support and kind comments.

Regards,
Bob

Did you ever give it a name? If not, you really need to. It is unbelievable gorgeous. You are a craftsman (not a Sears tool!).

Thanks Woketman. I've got no name for it, but I'm sure open to suggestions. Back when the original concept had side ducts and a little F4 styling, I was thinking about Phantasy. However, I lost the ducts to save weight and drag, so there isn't much F4 resemblance any more.

Hey Sean, Tom and I keep threatening to get up to Austin the middle of the week, but so far other stuff keeps interfering. I'll let you know when we are headed up.

Bob ought to call his design the "Projectile" because this lil gal scoots! Just my opinion but it out performs the swept fin Balsa Bandit I used to own.
He nailed the design...blistering passes with high g pulls, over and over, with no signs of stress. The jet presents very well in all flight attitudes and landings are a piece of cake.
The new colors are highly visible and the Spektrum link has been absolutely solid.

Dear Bob saw your nice design and at present I´m thinking about building some similar trainer for easy transport, easy flying, easy handing, something for every day flying.
I like the design you.
Do you have any CAD drawings or models I might use?
Best Regards

Matthias

Matthias, I do not have any usable/readable construction drawings. However, I can email you a .dwg file of the image in post #103 if that would be helpful.

Regards,
Bob

Hi Cel. I have 130 flights on this thing, but no video. I really should have one of my fly'n amigos shoot a little footage. I'm leaving for the day, but I'll send you an email tomorrow with a dwg attached.

Regards,
Bob

Is there already a jet called Turbinator? It was the name of the world record holder speed car

I don't think Bob named it, I think it was named by his peers, But since you asked, yes, there is a speed car called the turbinator: http://www.ugofadini.com/turbinatorstory.html

I know this topic is very old. But I have built this kind of plane. Is not 9 degrees angle of downthrust much?
