Rafale complete kit from X-tremejets

RE: Rafale complete kit from X-tremejets
None of the X-Tremejet models are made of polyester... That much said!
In the "claimed" diffusion of smelling Hysol, polyester or other composites, is like expecting a Big Horn Steak, but getting a Bigmack withot cheese..
Stig, you got your medium Big Horn steak for sure... ;-) Some here said, you get what you pay for. Some then again forgot this is a new era..
Enjoy it, I`ll wait for the sportjet. Soon to come...
Now, we expect some progress, Stig;-) ...

Sorry. I'm working on a AD Rafale and a Airworld L-39 for a customer at the moment, so I won't be able to work on the Xrafale before they are done.[&o] Hopefully someone else will post pictures of their progress in this thread.

RE: Rafale complete kit from X-tremejets
I was strongly considering one of these Rafs but I have heard the mains are in the scale position and the C.G on the model is further forward than the fly by wire full size one, this makes them very difficult to rotate. Can those who have flown them confirm that or have I heard wrong?

According to the instructions, the CG is placed 130 mm behind the wing leading edge. As far as I could figure out, the main gear will be 270 mm behind the leading edge. So that gives you a 140 mm. I would recommend to move the main gears as far forward as possible and also make sure that the plane has some positive incidence on the ground. It could also help to tilt the main units so that the wheels come closer to the CG. That will help rotation. Here is another picture from the instuction.

Hi Jason,
As long as you have positive angle on the stance, there will be no problem with rotating. It will not "leap" in air like some have done with Gripen. I mixed in some canard and it helps. But if you do not know what you are doing leave canard mix for later. CG is spot on and will be a bit nose heavy for advance pilots. I will try edit a video for low res and mail you.
Regards
Morne

Voy,
FYI, when Skymaster re-did the Gripen ARF+ they moved the mains forward about 1 1/2 inch. From the videos I've seen it seems to take off fine. I haven't flown mine yet. Along with being 2# lighter it should be a much better plane.
Anton should have learned from that experience. If the Rafale has main gears in the scale position it will probably take off similar to the original SM Gripen.

Hi Stig,
Anton took it to Taiwan to send via EMS today. So you should receive it soon. All other customers missing parts will also receive by EMS soon.
Packing list and new QC worker were problem. Now sorted out! I hope!

Hello Bruce.
I saw your F-15 on the other thread. Looks pretty good. I have owned a Skymaster F-15 and it is a great flier. You'll have lots of fun with it.
As far as I can remember there is no carbon fibre in any of the molded parts. Only the wing spar is carbon fibre.

Hello all,
I am putting my X-Treme Rafale together. It appears that my JR 8611 does not fit in the wing. Portions of the servo towards the trailing edge sticks out - above the wings' surface. What servo do I need to use so it gets hidden in the wing? The instructions uses the JR 8511 which is about the same dimensions. I have no idea how they were able to fit their servo in place!!!
btw, how does one upload pictures to a posting in here?
thanks,
Amir

I have some images attached which show the servo sticking up above the wing. Also note, if the images come through properly, the L-Brackets are actually thicker than the wing!!
any one has any suggestions on how to fit the servos into the wing?
thanks,
Amir

RE: Rafale complete kit from X-tremejets
Amir,
I had the same problem with mine. I'm using JR 8411s. Here's what I did, I sanded the cover in the areas that the servo/bracket were hitting. The screws provided actually add to the problem as well. I went and got some better mounting screws all around. See photos below.
Watch the wings too. There's a fine balancing act going on with the elevons pivot. The elevon basically has a fixed position as it continues on into the fuselage, but you have to sand the trailing edge of the wing in order to get the recommended throw (30mm up/down) as well as find the proper hinge point. I think I'm there, but I haven't glued the hinge pins yet. I'll check it sometime Monday evening.
Interesting note, the Rafale overall length isn't 82 inches, it's 80. I quickly measured after I was able to successfully put it in the back of my truck (6' long bed x 20" tall inside with bed cover closed). I was surprised that it fit so well, at an angle of course.
I started messing with the gear and tried the Airpower gear valve and it was leaking massively. I'll come back to that when I get more serious with the gear installation. I just wanted to see if I could move the gear, which I couldn't.
The image with the exhaust nozzles shows some screws I used so that I can detach them. I wanted that option because the SST pipe would be easier to remove/install for me.

Ok, thank you for the pointers. I am disappointed that the cover for wing servos will not fit properly.
Are you planning to install gear doors? Has anyone installed gear doors on their Rafale?
Any pictures or instructions on how to install gear doors?
thanks,

autorot,
Did you get any servo mounting hardware with your A-10X?
Also have you tried if the supplied flap hinges are the correct size?
Or maybe Morne could answer the servo mounting hardware question?
Some pictures posted here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=5370029

Todd at Dreamworks has covers ( i think originally marketed for the bobcatXL ) that have a protruding bulge .. I had used these on a SM Grippen to cover 8611s i had in the wings ..

HI,
No servo mounting hardware with me A-10X also.
For the flap, i made a control in the wing which attacks the flap directly

RE: Rafale complete kit from X-tremejets
Got the rudder done last night. Also finished the fuel tanks and pressure tested them with kero. The fuel tanks held up with just a tiny bit of cracking of the glue joints along the edge that touched the smooth part of the tank. I used some thin CA to re-seal the seam. Something to keep an eye on over time as the tanks are repeatedly filled. I think I've spent 3-4 hours on the tanks alone to get them to this point.
Starting to get crowded under the canopy. I see a lot of Velcro use in the future for the rest of the remaining items. I'm going to drop a 16oz tank in behind the nose gear for smoke. I've found another spot to tee in two additional 8oz tanks near the main gear. The air tanks are behind the main gear formers as well.
I'm still debating doing the gear doors. May just get the Rafale airworthy and come back to them later. There are some threads here on RCU that show some good images of gear door setup. If and when I do mine I'll post pictures of my interpretation.
