Realistically, minimum of $3k to get a used one flying, You might get lucky and find something for less, but then again, you might inherit someone elses problems... For new start at 5k and go up from there.....

Johny, this is a cheap combo. But remember that in order to fit the turbine in that cat, it have to be reinforce very well if not it will not be safe. In the last RCJI mag is an article about it and they say fly at your own risk at the end. About the JetJoe, you know all the issues with those engine in the past. I don't know about now. Is a long time don't heard about them. I'll not recomend this combo for a new commers.
Erik, take a look at x-tremejets they have the A-10X in a good price complete with gears. Then you can find a good used turbine in the market place for about $1500 and up. This will give you a new jet for about $2300. It's just depend where you want to stay. There is a lot planes for the 12 - 18 thrust class range.

IMO you can look for this in two ways. You can buy the cheapest engine and adapt it to a propeller designed airplane. The adquisition cost
will be very low, but the cost per flight could vary from inifinite (total expended/number of flights) to about $300 (if you can squeeze from it 5 flights)
Or, buy a decent engine, a proven and reliable design etc, and spend about $5000. Unless you are very unfortunate you will easily extract from it 500 flights (it could be much more) and spend about $10 per flight , excluding fuel costs. Not to mention the pleasure of having a
excelent performing aircraft with a turbine that works anytime you want.

I just recently took the plunge. After careful study of all the avenues I have to agree with erbroens and go with a dependable and reliable setup. I spent numerous hours on RCU classifieds and the jet forum until I found what I wanted and could afford. I purchased a Reaction 54 for $1200 RTF without the turbine and reciever. Add a new P70 for $2500 and some support equipment (extinguisher, fuel filler, etc.) and I got started for $4500. I could not be happier with this setup. My advise, do not go cheap. You will regret it later!!!

I bought a RTF BVM Maverick with a new Simjet 1200 two years ago for around $3200.
I wouldn't look into buying anything brand spanking new for your first jet. Try finding a Rookie or Hotspot with a good running Ram 500 for less than $3K RTF. Im sure there's one out there.

I bought a used Ram 500 from a friend for $1000 and built a Balsa USA Enforcer modified for turbine. So I got my first turbine powered plane for under $2K. The Enforcer is fast and a very stable flier. It required extensive modifications, so you need to be an experienced builder. You can kit bash it into give it a variety of different looks. I've been flying it regularly for two seasons now.
The engine failed after about 120 flights. The Ram was difficult to start and more trouble than it was worth, so you have to be careful when buying a used turbine. It's now flying with an Artes Bee that I bought used on RCU for $1500. The Artes works flawlessly and I'm up to about 150 flights so far.
If you aren't an experienced builder and into kit bashing the best bet would be the A-10X from X-treme Jets as Avicom suggested. Buy a name brand turbine with a good reputatiion.

IMHO best way to go is with a Baby Boomerang or A-10X with a Ram 500 engine. Easily in the air for under $3,000. You could go with a P-60 or Artez Bee, but that will add another $1,000 to the price. I had a 500 in a Baby Boomerang w/Spring Air gear and standard servos on everything but elevator. Great flying combination. Sold the airframe to another club member as his first turbine and have the 500 for sale in the RCU classifieds.

I found an inexpensive combo. I purchased a Five-Jet for $350 and put a kit-built Wren MW54 I purchased for around $1,500 on it. The plane looks like an 80% Boomerang which is ideal for a 54 size turbine, Wren, Ram 500, PST, etc. Should be very docile. Check Wren's web site for a picture of the Wrenegade which is an updated version of the Five-Jet.
I have also put a Wren MW44 on one of the pusher Bobcats with no retracts. I paid $150 for the plane and $1950 for the 44. The 44 fits with no modifications to the plane. The speed with no retracts is around 100-120 mph. Some people have put a bigger engine on it but it is really going to make the wing loading go way up. The little 44 is perfect.

I think you will find 3K to be about the magic number. I have had quite a few jets, some high dollar, some not so expensive. The cheaper ones are more relaxing to fly for sure. I am now finishing a Baby Boomer that is getting a P-80 that I bought used for $1600. I will wind up with about 3K in it total using servos I had on hand. I think you are much better off with a used Jetcat, Artes, or even a T-500 than a new Jetjoe. You will probably never get the joe to run, and the others probably will work great out of the box. PST, Wren, etc. All are very good engines. Or go a few more bucks for a new 12lb engine like the Wren, Artes, P-60. Then you are set for a long time. My 2 cents. Bob

Remember you get what you pay for. There are other things to consider, for instance, brakes. You can go cheap with some scrubber type brakes, but the first time you have to abort a takeoff, a good set of brakes will pay for themselves (don't ask how I know, my thumbs forget they are there [&o].
Some deals can be had - right now I'm re-building a wrecked Super Reaper. I bought it for $500, with a new set of retracts. I sold the retracts on Ebay for $450, so I now have a cheap jet. It will be a little ugly, but it's going together to be a beater jet. My first Reaper was uglier, but flew just fine with a P-80. I'm hoping my T-500 will fly it OK.
I'm thinking a Baby Boomerang, with a 12 to 14 pound turbine. Should be the best value for the money.
