Instead of making two halves, can't you just melt the foam out of a one piece tank?

Yes you can, though disolving the foam results in a messy goo that can be a pain to clean out completely.

I'm not bothered about the construction methods though - I'm happy with my past experience of how to do that.

All I'm interested in for now is whether there are any cool new rubberized materials that I can experiment with.

I tried the melting foam process; thus, why I now choose to wrap the foam halves in clear tape. Too messy otherwise!

I see, messy. I just thought that since most tanks split at the seams they could be done away with or most of the glassing done after the two halves are joined. I think I would like to try my hand at making some custom shaped tanks.

Yup - avoiding splits at the seams is certainly a valid goal ; there again if we can prevent having the energy focus at the seam by having our custom tank simply distort rather than shatter, all the better.

If you are serious about wanting to build some of your own tanks, let me know ; I can look out the tank-building articles that I used and forward them to you. You can also see my experiments with building custom tanks for my Hunter starting here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=3538308
