Lubbock, TX T-38 Jet Rally 2007
GREAT NEWS!!! Guys, it was a little shaky about our event this year, but everything is now settled -- and WE'RE A GO! We will hold the T-38 Jet Rally at Abernathy Airport with full support of the city of Abernathy and the FAA. The city of Abernathy is a short 12 miles North of Lubbock (about the same distance from Lubbock as Reese AFB is -- where we held it last year). The runway is 4000 feet long and 75 feet wide, will feature concrete pits, and plenty of camping room (no hookups) for free. Bring your own shelter or call Robert Masten for tent rentals if needed (806) 793-7777.
The event starts with setup day on Wednesday, August 15 (also open flying), Pilot's meeting at 0900 on Thursday morning to kick the event off, and will go Friday and Saturday all day -- August 16 through 18, 2007. Sunday will be open flying since most participants will want to start leaving for home early, but you are welcome to stay and fly if desired. Impound will be in effect Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. AMA membership and Waivers will required.
Features will include:
* ARF Sport Jet Kit give-away (type to be announced) for registered pilots raffle (Don't want to miss this!)
* Raffle for spectators.
* FREE "all you can eat" Texas Brisket BBQ, baked beans, and potato salad on Friday night for all comers -- Provided by Randy Brown - and if you've eaten his cooking before, you know what a treat this is gonna be!
* "Dutch Treat" Awards Banquet with trophies on Saturday night (location to be announced).
* Pilot's registration fee of $30.00 for the event -- includes one noon meal ticket.
* Concessions on site Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Plenty of food, soft drinks, water. Restrooms on site.
* Tent rental available -- Contact Robert Masten for details and prices (prepayment to secure your tent) -- 806 793-7777 -- Also if you need early arrival information.
* Email Les Morrow for questions: -- or Mike Danchek CD:
For more information, please access the Wings Miniature Aircraft Society Website: www.Wingsmas.org
Plenty of reasonably priced hotels, motels in the Lubbock area within easy driving distance to Abernathy.
Gonna be a great time, hope to see you there for the food and festivities, not to mention the great Jet flying activities.
Come enjoy the great Texas weather with us -- GUARANTEED to have a good time!
See you there!! August 15 through 18, 2007

You can't get anymore wide open or flatter than this is. I hope the one and only tree is not in the flight path

I think you and Paul Lott need to get a chainsaw and put it to the tree to be safe!

If I remember the layout of the airport correctly, that tree will be on the same side as the pits, impound, concessions, and port-a-potties. Our setup area will be north of the tree. James or Les can confirm or not if I'm right on this.
Additional information that I was told to post here was that you need to take Exit 2 off of I-27 in Abernathy and then drive east 4 miles to the airport.
Also, this is the 8th year that we have put this event on. So you don't want to miss it.

Here's a link to the [link=http://www.wingsmas.org/Our_Flying_Site.html]new site[/link]. I gotta ask this question out loud: Do we RON at the same places in Lubbock or are there other reasonable lodging choices in Abernathy? Inquiring minds want to know ...
Thanks.

No places to stay in Abernathy, Lubbock is closes. Go Hotels .com and put in Lubbock for a list of places/rates or have Dawn book a place for you. She has a travel agency.
New subject, you take exit 21 off I27 comming from Lubbock and then turn right onto FM 2060 and go east 4.7 mi. Don't know the exit number comming from the north, but if you get off at the first available exit then go to main st and turn east and cross I27, turn right and then turn left onto FM Rd 2060 go 4.7 mi to end of highway and airport will be on your left.
Abernathy is just a small farming town that has seen it's hayday. They do have a nice Dairy Queen and a gas station or two, but that is about it.
However the city is behind our jet meet, so anything we can do to show our apprication will be points in our favor.

Hope to see a good turn out, jet flyers in west Texas are in short supply. A lot of people around here don't even know there are true turbin powered RC model aircraft.

RE: Lubbock, TX T-38 Jet Rally 2007
Friends,
We should have another great event this year. For our purposes, the facility at Abernathy is comparable to Reese. Moh and I used to fly our jets there before we were able to fly at Reese. We held our pattern contests there from 1994 through 1999, and we were never disappointed.
Abernathy's airport is 24 miles from my house while Reese is 17. There should be no problem staying in the usual places in Lubbock and driving up there. The drive is interstate all the way.
We are just beginning to make our preparations for the event. More news to follow...
