No airbags needed in that .....well, you can't call it a "cockpit" now can you?

This was at Fentress NALF (2500 Lockheed Ave. Chesapeake, VA).
We are allowed to fly here on weekends, holidays, & Thurs. mornings. Occassionally, the Navy "bounces" aircraft during these times and we cannot fly, but that is very rare. Come out and introduce yourself.
Look forward to meeting you.

Great Pictures all!! I am tring to get mine together to post. As everyone can see the pictures are great. That goes along with the fantastic weather, very light breeze right down the runway, and taking off left to right. Some very impressive models, flying, and piloting skills was seen this past weekend. The electric contingent was there too. Those aircraft really screamed (some whined too). They put on an incredible show of the new electric technology that is out. The Navy F18's shooting touch and goes on Friday were also neat to see. Thanks to Frank and crew for another fantastic event. Also a big thanks to the base Fire crew for being there to feed us and all the spectators. Cant wait for next year

Last but not least is the sad evidence of what used to be great looking jet: The SAAB Grippen, flown by Ted Olsen. It was probalbly the most spectacular jet crash you have seen. When it hit the ground it disintegrated into a ball of flames and set the ground on fire. The Fentress Fire crew came with its big Fire truck and extinguished the brushfire. All in all were four jets lost.

I would like to clarify the fire extinguish situation. The fire was extinguished by pilots and crew with on hand fire extinguishers. The Fentress NALF fire crew arrived and sprayed water on the area to verify all hot spots were taken care of.
Though I was flying a sniper at the time, I did catch the crash in my perifieral (sp) vision, and was spectacular oh and ....show center.
It was also safely away from all personel.
Had a great time this year, got lots of time on the sabre again and of course the old standby Mav Pro on DF power.

Anthony,
Your are correct in that several pilots and other people contained the fire with hand held fire extinguishes. Since the grass was so dry the fire spread quickly and the smoke was getting heavy. When the fire fighting crew came they sprayed the smoldering ground to make sure every spark was extinguished. Regarding the distance to the spectators I think it was darn close. It was straight across the runway, which is about 50 ft wide and then roughly another 20 ft after the edge of the runway. So, the crash was approx. 70 -80 ft in front of the pilots. Luckily it happened parallel to the flight line.

Had a great time at the event guys. It was my first time attending a jet meet, and I really appreciate all the info that was offered up to me when asked. ( I know I worried "Doc" to death!) Been looking to enter the world of jets, and was told by Anthony this would be a good chance to get a close up view of several different types. I was standing show center when the "Worm Burner" crash took place, and was impressed how quickly the crews were on top of it. As the smoke settled down, Anthony turned back to me and yelled, "So Larry, you still wanna try Jets?" !!! LOL My reply was, "heck yeah. I like this stuff. If ya crash it, ya dont have to fix it!
Looking forward to next years event, but I wont be spectating. Ya see,,,,,,,,,I ordered a Jet before leaving the event on Saturday.
