WOW !
I can't believe how far this post has come, when I first saw the Falcon 120 I was impressed with it's size and thought about putting a mid size turbine in it, there were some doubts . It's nice to see that it has become a reality." Great job guys ". Now that you have done all the hard work , I'm thinking the Falcon 120 would make a great winter project for me.
Good luck Guys.

Hi Guys, had another 5 good flights today, @ 6.5 mins airbourne with fuel to spare. Another 90deg cross wind as usual. Short clip here of couple of loops and a go-around. Engine was at idle, so a lot of lag before the power came on, cheers Tim

Would anyone be interested in selling me on of these fully built up? If so, name a price.

Forgot to mention, you may recall I recently had 3 flame outs in flight. The last 5 flights were perfect. As I could not find anything wrong, I reprogramed the ECU starting profile, to try to sort of reboot it. I also repositioned the Master and Slave RX's (2.4 Ghz radio), with the aerials at 90 degs to there original positions, in case they were seeing a split second loss of signal, causing the ECU to shut down, but too fast for the ECU to record a reception failure, and just giving a low temp failure. Anyway all was well for 5 subsequent flights.

On my 4th start up, I had problems starting, it was basically that the initial propane heat was not giving a great enough temp rise. I am using the highest Propane butane mix i can find. I tried a new bottle, no good. I found that after the gas had lite up, I turned the gas canister gentely onto its side, to enable a small amount of liquified gas to enter the system. The temp rise was much more rapid, racing up to around 220 degs C, where the fuel came on faster and spool up was a lot quicker. As the rpm rose, I returned the propane can to upright, and the fuel took over quicker.
The EGT was a lot lower throughout the start and spool up faster. I will use this method in furure, especially as the days are getting colder.
This has worked on my engine, it might not be the same on yours, please be carefull.

I also experimented with 45 deg flap, instead of just the 20mm deflection. The model really slows down with 45 degs. I had a cross wind and the flaps do allow the wind to swing you around a bit more in the crosswind. I found that no elevator adjustment was required with 45 deg selected. In fact I think maybe a little Down elevator trim would help. The model definatley ballons a lot, and on the landing you have to be quite gentle in the flare. I tried two landings like this, both balloned on landing. The landing distance was a lot shorter. As I am used to 20mm flap, I landed in this configuration for rest of flights, but will try again in low wind conditions, in an attempt to offset some of the residual thrust at idle that we experience. Also with a bit of throttle on, to drag the plane to the threshold, the spool up should be quicker in a go-around situation.
Cheers Tim

Hmm...nice but no dice. I need something more complete...engine included. I don't have the time to do any assembly at all otherwise I would build it up from an ARF.

Today I had a sucessful maiden flight with my Falcon 120. This is my second Falcon 120 as the first met an unfortunate demise on its maiden. The first was slightly tail heavy which proved VERY uncontrollable in pitch and crashed nose straight in while trying to land. The CG on the first bird was slightly aft of 13".

I was very sad to see number 1 go in but I liked the plane so I built another. I set the CG a little further foward on it at 11 3/4" instead of 13 inches. It flew a little nose heavy so I'm taking a little nose weight out and I'll try again.

My Falcon 120 is powered by and OS 1.60 FX 2 stroke turning a Zinger 15x14 cut down to 14x14. I''ll have to do some experimenting with props but I'm hoping to get more speed out of this bird. I wish APC made a pusher in a similar size/pitch.

Weight is 14.0 lbs. I have the engine exhaust running down through the wing after it exits the muffler - using an aluminum tube and coupler. This makes for an exceptionally clean plane and is a pleasure. My 1st one had the exhaust running out the top of the muffler and it made a mess all over.

I have not really opened it up yet since I'm slighly paranoid after the first Falcon 120 crashed.

One thing I've found very benficial from following this thread is the starting elevator position. The plane seems to like the elevator flush with the top curve of the stab instead on the flat bottom. Thanks OPJOSE!! Another warning about this plane is keep the CG at 13 or foward. going aft of 13" is lethal for this plane for sure. I'll try to post some pics asap.

Dave - excellent addition to the forum

This is my planned setup. My Falcon came yesterday and your posts are timely information on this setup.

I / we've been waiting for someone with an OS 160 setup following lots of comments that 120, 130 & 140 were all too docile.
I think a few people here will be very interested to read your posts on the OS 160 performance so please keep them coming.

I know this wont shift it like a turbine but thats not what many of us are concerneed about right now - eh guys??

More engine, engine mount and internal shots please.

Any video yet or anybody know of video with OS 160 anywhere??

Keep up the posts and share your knowledge. This is a great forum for this bird and your setup has just widened the scope.

Martin

Here are a few more shots and details on my Falcon 120.

A note of interest is the nose gear. I'm using a 110 degree spring-air nose gear and made my own nose wheel well from balsa, which allows the nose gear to fully retract into the fuselage, instead of only halfway.

Here are a couple belly shots. The small black dots inside the main wheel wells are rubber bumpers so the gear doesn't slam the plastic liner.

On another note, I had to add about 11 oz. of lead to the nose to get it to balance. The combo of the extra weight in the nose, plus the weight of the OS 1.60 w/muffler as opposed to the OS 1.20 w/muffler is about 21 oz. more weight.

We'll have to see what happens with the engine and prop combos. I'm using the OS 1.60FX because that is all I had in this engine range. I also have a OS 91VRDF that might somehow work. I figure I'm going to need about 17-18,000 rpm plus a 14" pitch to achieve a 200 MPH prop speed. I don't think the OS 1.60 can rev that high, but may prove to have good vertical pulling power.

The canopy attachment was made front making a 3/32 medium balsa sheet floor that follows the contour of the fuselage where the canopy fits. As you can see from the photo, hard balsa stringers are cut to follow the contour of the canopy floor. I used a hardwood block to support the carbon rods in front and a solid balsa block with a 1/16 plywood end cap in the read for the hatch pin to enter. A front and rear half bulkhead is made from plywood. I used a spring loaded hatch pin I had from another plane kit and soldered an extension to it with an L-bend coming out the back.

I can post some pics to clarify.
