Four flying days and eight flights later I stuffed it.
Putting it together without taking the proper precautions and I connected
the elevator wires on one side the wrong way. Mistake number 1.

Checking all surfaces moving during taxi roll I missed the fact that the
elevator wasn't. Should have checked each individually. Mistake number two.

I had the model trimmed to climb slightly at full power so it actually took off and
gently climbed out, turned to left and suddenly realized that I had no
elevator, nursed it around by rudder and slight aileron until clear of all
obstacles then killed the engine and tried to turn back to field. The nose
dropped in the turn and she went in.

No-one or nothing to blame except myself. Got too familiar with the routine
and missed steps.

Ahhh well.

OUCH! Sorry to hear that! I lost a 35% Carden Extra 330 like that once…. I learned a hard lesson that day...

So sorry to hear about the loss. I lost my first Navy Cat to pilot error (servos were working but the brain was not ) so I know how you feel. Did the turbine make it thru?

I have a somewhat damaged Falcon (fixable) that will need a home for pretty cheap - I bought a BVM Bobcat.

Sorry to hear this Col. I think most modellers do something like this at least once in their careers. I lost a very expensive pattern plane to crossed ailerons a few years back. Very humbling.

Kudos to you for having the foresight to shut down the engine prior the to crash..

Thanks Z, Ed and Roger. Yes it is a lesson I won't soon forget. The main reason that killing the engine popped into my head was fire. I was hoping no flame would mean no fire. As it is the FOD screen was still in position and there is no obvious signs of ingestion. The fuel solenoid was destroyed and I will need to replace some wiring. Anyone got a spare front housing for a K80?



Hobbyaire, I would love to take you up on the offer but I fear freight from Texas to Queensland would be excessive.

Yes indeed. Hitting the kill switch, even just moments prior to impact seems to be the best way to avoid the fire ball. And there is much less chance of internal damage if the motor is not actually running when you turn it into a spade..

I am sure Ken Mollison will be able to help you out with parts..

Hey everyone just some pics showing off my latest tornado/navy cat/falcon 120, (Ive had four now, everyone a winner) I got this one from the vendor here on RCU. added a little silver pin striping and decals that I did not use from one of my old modelbau USA tornados.
Maiden was uneventful as usual CG at 12 3/4". No climbing with power increase at all. I found that a wheel collar works perfect for this. Currently flying with a rabbit 90 but im going to swap it out for a Bee II that I am acquiring to help shave a few ounces. We will see how long I keep this one I just picked up a BVM bobcat so I may be listing this Navy cat for sale.....

Ah no Col!

so sorry to hear that she's gone! I was hoping we would get a chance to fly together at some point.

I've made the same mistake before when people have been talking to me while assembling the falcon120 but picked it up on the preflight. Like you said, you do learn the lesson! I Lost an EDF model to that mistake 10 years ago and since have always done a control check before every flight.

Hope the turbines ok and you get straight back onto the horse.

Hello Dave,

Ordered and paid for another Falcon from Ken at KMRCJets this afternoon. I am hoping the turbine is ok, it didn't ingest anything and was not making power when the model went in.
I am intending to do the new one in the same scheme and the last so we will still make up a "late cold war pair" .
Nothing fancy this time, no nav lights, no power regulators etc,, simple and basic.

Damn! so sorry to see that. I almost did the same thing with mine. was in a big hurry to show off for a friend had the engine running was taxiing out checked the feathers and knew thats not right, so I shut her down. I can tell by the pics You did a nice job of building her. I know You can do it again. Ron.

Got the colour scheme completed other than the final paint on the nose section done for this weekend's big event at the full sized airport at Maryborough!

It flew great and I have some onboard footage I'll have to work out what to edit before posting, but seeing as it was the first time in nearly 20 yrs of model flying that I have flown off bitumen, it was a great experience. Not being allowed to fly my BAe Hawk because it is an EDF and it would generate complaints was a bit of a sad point of the weekend, but I will work with the QTF committee to see if we can resolve this for the next event.

The model proved not to be an issue to see, which is good because I was a little scared about that.

More pic's of the model without the dad, and nephew helpers coming!

Hi guys,

Seem to me I have found the right thread, with all the Falcon 120 guru's. After the 2014 QTFly-in up north the QTF (Queensland Turbine Flyers) committee decided to spend some of it's war chest and acquired a new Carbon Falcon 120/Navy Cat airframe from Ken Mollison of KMRC. The idea is to have it done as a-have-a-go-jet for when we go to visit clubs and there are guys that wish to get the kero burning feel.

I have ended up with the build and have a few questions as there is no manual or instructions in the box. I would like to get some idea of what all the bits and pieces in the box are for, so can any of you point me in the right direction please? It will be helpful if I can get a link to a basic how to, otherwise I am gonna have to bore you bunch with all the detail.
