Does the starfire 2 take off of grass very well?
When doing the cg, do you have the jet right side up or upside down?

And does anybody know where the cg is from the leading edge of the wing?

cg located at 3/4 in. aft of former b-1, that's the former at the fan unit. Measuring from the leading edge, 6.375 in. at the wing joint. You should do this inverted. I haven't flown one off grass, but if it were cut very short and smooth and long runway, should work. I recommend pavement. Good luck, Randy

I flew my starfire off grass. It was powered by a RAM 750 Plus

I modified the main gear area to make it work

Randy, Have you flown the Star Fire II?
What are the characteristics of the jet in flight.
Seeing how this is suppose to be the trainer jet

I have the JMP version. Yellow aquired the rights from Tom Cook. It's the same plane.
It is a 175+mph jet. Some consider it to be a trainer.
It goes where you point it, flies on a rail. Takes off in less than 200ft. Pretty straight forward landings. Set it up as per instruction book to start, you may want to monkey with the flap settings later. Feel free to e mail me if you have any questions. Good luck, Randy

Hey Randy, on the YellowAircraft StarFire II with the CG, does it matter with the ARF version?

Cause I have the ARF kit.
Thanks.

Default ARF CG

I wouldn't think it would be any different. It should say in the assembly instructions. Call Yellow if concerned. If Shaun is out there, he should know.
Happy flying, Randy

Hi,

The CG is the same whether it's kit built or the ARF.

For grass ops, I don't think you need to change anything except, perhaps, using bigger wheels on the landing gear. Depending on how far back you bend the nose wire, you can get up to a 2.25" wheel in there, and I used a small Testors paint cap with some sticky-back sandpaper to enlarge the wells for the mains. Even on fan power, the airplane will get up quickly on grass.

There are some subtle differences on the JMP vs. the Yellow version, I found out at Florida Jets. For one thing, the tail area on the Yellow is slightly larger (horizontals), and the wings on the Yellow version are swept. On the JMP version, the leading edge is swept, but on the Yellow version, the leading and trailing edges are swept. Also, the Yellow version has a much more pronounced undercamber at the trailing edge of the wing. This is supposed to make it more flyable in deadstick situations. The airplane deadsticks very well.

Hope this helps,

Shaun

Shaun, If it's a kit or arf version on the yellow starfire should the cg be at 6 3/8 from the leading edge of the wing?

Thanks.

Default starfire II vs. IIc

The yellow starfire II is the final version of the JMP Starfire II. Swept leading and trailing edges on the wings identify it. The Jmp Starfire II was foam core wings and stabs also. Jmp sold all the molds and rights to the Starfire II to Yellow but retained the rights to the II C.
The JMP Starfire II C was/is all composite including all control surfaces. The wing was "cranked" foward which gave a little more span. It was readily identifiable by the straight trailing edge and also had about 80-100 sq inches more area than the II. The airfoil on th IIC was a modified semi-symetrical section with flaps that extended to the root.
My II C has been flying since Superman 1997 with 3 different turbines;Goldenwest FD3-67 at 18lbs wet;Jetcat p-80 at 22lbs wet;and now with a Jetcat P-120 set at 17lbs thrust and 22.25 lbs wet. The total fuel load is only 58 oz which means 4-5 min flights with a 2 go around reserve.
Any Starfire is an excellent flying aircraft The original,Yellow, Or composite ;fan or turbine.
Oh yeah- I flew the IIC at Denver with the FD3-67 which had 8.25 lb of thrust at sea level. The A/C only needed to use 20 degrees of flaps here to rotate instead of the 10 deg at low altitudes.
The original flight was shown on the 1997 Superman video by SKS.
