Sean, here is the lathe I have, a 10 inch Clausing.
I'd convert it to CNC but Butch has enough to complain about now.

As you guys are all very experienced, and this project looks fantastic, I have attached a link to a US company who make mechanical conversions for retracts and alike, redering them scale in operation - they may have a use somewhere in your project (canopy - air brakes etc....)

I am sure you all know of them, but a bonus if not.

Will watch you thread with interest.

[link]http://www.lado-tech.com[/link]
I talked to that co ref another project (40 lb) about a month or two ago...and (at that time at least) they didn't make anything strong enough for even THAT application, let alone this one. Cool concept tho.

The Voodoo and the Thud are two airplanes that are sorely needed in this hobby. You guys are working too big for me to deal with.. but wow what a project!

Sure would love to see a Tbird Thud someday.

David don't worry about our project, finish yours! You have all your parts finished for your F-8 and we will probably fly before you (2009). You will crash before us but that doesn't count. Ha Ha ! Butch

Almost done... just have to work out the scissors. I think it will certainly be hefty enough for the job.
Yeah I know, the bottom end is for the other side, I grabbed the wrong drawing but hey, it has to be made anyway.

Wow! You get a real feel for the size of those gear when you see them sitting on a sheet of 8.5x11 paper [X(]

Nice job guys, can't wait to see what comes next.

I didn't realize there was no size reference in the other shots, maybe you can get a better feel for the size from this shot. The wheel is 5.75 inches.
It's gonna be a brute!

Thanks for the good words everyone.

Awesome dude. What'd you start off with a 3 deep chunk by 5 inches by something? That's a big chunk of aluminum. The rotation pin looks a little Micky Mouse, could be the angle.

Ha that's about right Sean -- start with a big block of aluminum and cut away everything that doesn't look like a 105 retract.
The rotation pins are 3/16 steel in bronze bushings. I think it will be adequate but there's only one way to find out!

Well, there's some perspective! Never mind, looked much smaller to me [X(]

Paul,
You're not actually going to use those wheels are you? I mean you will get some rubber ones right??

Looks SWEET man! How long did it take you to make them?
If you take that plane to Top Gun, can I get a ride in it?

Les,
Things were getting heavy so I decided to use balsa tires. Should help to keep the rollout short, don't you think?

I was going to suggest using large bagels for tires.

If they're too soft, just wait a couple days.

Nose gear mockup so far. The hard part is figuring out how to mount the cylinder and steering.

Paul, I'm glad I am not you, because I thought real hard for about 10 seconds about how to mount a cylinder and make it turn, and I gave up from overload having to think.

I am impressed and someday hope to benefit from your thinking about it

Got the cylinder mounted and working. I have a couple of options on the steering but it will take some trial and error.
It works with just 20 psi on the mockup; I wonder why it will take 110 psi when it's installed in the jet.
Notice I have more than 90 degrees available, probably up to 110 degrees or so. Nice to have that if you need it.

The mockup is done! The steering setup was copied from Lynn McCauley's B-58 gear - I'm sure there is another way to make it work but this one is proven.
