Default Jet Legend F/A-22 Raptor build thread

I've been very impressed with the quality of the ARF and the service provided by Dante "CAMLEX" of Jet legend.

http://www.camlex-rc.com/jetlegend/f22raptor.html

For now, I'll just post some pictures.

Chris,

Looks like nice stuff so far! I'm keenly interested in this thread as I'm waiting for the rest of the parts and instructions on my new kit.

Did that light kit come with the ARF?

HI Chris,

You'll love this plane!! It flies supurb. I have flown mine off grass with a P80 and just recently put a P120se in it and it is just fantastic!! I locked my rudders and flaps and just coupled my ailerons with my tailerons. It flies great and and can be flown very slow with full control. At full throttle it is very quick and has great vertical preformance. Let me know if I can be any help.

Cheers

Jeremy

The lights are from Electrodynamics http://electrodynam.com/rc/EDR-117/index.shtml , super bright and visible in the day. The Raptor has very unique position lights that I will try and replicate.

Jeremy,
I'm hoping to get it airborne by October, the flying season here in upstate NY is very short. My plan is to get her functionally flying this year and repainting and detailing through the winter. The Arf comes painted in the mold, which is OK, but the plane is so nice it really deserves proper paint.
Power will be a Jetcat Titan, which I've been test flying in my Typhoon. The Turbine runs flawlessly, 6 perfect flights.

HI Chris,

The titan will be a good combo for the plane. You will never need full throttle during flight. This plane is fast due to its streamlined design. I only push it to full if I want a really fast low pass. Even flying on the P80 only required 3/4 throttle and it was really moving. With the 120se most of my flight is done at 1/2 throttle.

How are you going to do the rudders. This kit has a history of rudder flutter. I'm not trying to be critical as it is on my list of planes for my next project.

I'm using some 4kg mini servos with the smallest horn on the servo itself and a much larger one on the rudders. I hope to gain maximum torque through this and a slop-free linkage. Hopefully this will be okay. Failing that, I will sink a standard high torque servo in the base of the fin.

I'm struggling with the wheel (outer) door actuation at the moment; I just can't get the horn length right and achieve a solid opening and closing operation - ideas anyone?

Cheers

Jeff

I am also keenly interested in this thread. My next jet will probably be the F-22. What is that bulbish silver looking item on the pics?

Hi Jeff,

I cut down a control horn and mounted it half way along. I just got home so i'll take a pic and post it.

Upper doors. They work well.
You might have to file away part of the lip the door sits on to allow the pushrod to clear the wheels

I just finished the rudders yesterday, very straight forward with no problems. Jet legend supplies stainless steel rods for all the control surfaces, very strong. I usually don’t use the supplied ARF hardware but in this case, I did.
Flutter is always a concern, but the fins and rudders are very stiff and fit together like a glove. I’ve done many rudder systems on ARF's and never had a single problem or indication of flutter.
For the installation, I used the large Robart single point hinges with hinge glue instead of the supplied hinges. The supplied hinges are very similar to Robart, but I used what I knew worked in the past.
The rudder servos are the Hitech metal gear as shown in the first picture. Again, I’ve always used this servo for the rudders and have had zero problems.
All the gear doors are done except for the 2 main doors which seem a bit tricky. Jeremy’s pictures will help (Thanks) but a may choose different attachment points?
Work seems to be really interfering with this build, I need to win the lottery...Once the doors are complete, and it’s on to the wings and the fuse.
I’ll try and post some pictures today of my progress before I leave for the weekend. This really is the nicest Arf I’ve had, very strong, well designed, and the aluminum parts are beautiful!
I highly recommend this kit for all you beginners out there, it’s easy to build and will be an excellent trainer jet with a P-80 or P120. The best part is it looks way better then the goofy trainers on the market. The Jet Legend F/A-22 really captured the lines of the full-scale jet, trust me I know.

Hi mate,

Could you post a picture of the door cylinder and its attachment in the fuz. A couple more pictures of the doors would be great too.

Thanks, you a star...

Hi Chris,

I found it was best to install the door ram with the main gear installed so I could check for clearance. It is pretty tight in there!!

The jet flies really nice. Even with the flaps fixed it still slows down very nicely. In the air it has a very locked feel to it. It can also fly very slow with the nose pushed right up, looks very cool!! I've only had the 6 flights on it so far but i'm loving it more and more each time I fly it!! I'm looking forward to flying it off a tar runway next weekend at the Temora Jet Meet.

Jeff,

here is a shot of the lower door rams. I had bought the wrong size so made a mount in the middle which is screwed into the fuse. Very strong and works well.

Of course, a fine glass of Shiraz always goes together when building Jets.

The fuel tanks are done, the supplied hardware works fine. I'll need to fit a tank or two to increase the fuel capacity for the Titan.
