Default question about oil (23699)?

After looking through alot of the posts I see that people are using this mil spec oil. Since areoshell 500 and the others are fairly hard to come by unless I want to pay buku bucks is it ok to use any of those turbine oils as long as it meets the 23699 mil specs.

I have a "FRIEND" who happens to work on helicopters for the military and all the turbine oil they use is 23699. Would this be ok?

Just wondering because I am very new to turbines (just bought my first a week ago) and want to hear a more recent answer from the experts out there.

Thank you,

Harry

You can always get Aeroshell 500 from the Oil Store (Purvis Bros.) in any quantity:

24 Qt cases are cheaper.

Be careful with any warranty issues. Being pennywise and pound foolish can be expensive.

$8 a qt isn't "buku" expensive! 5 gallons of kero for a 54 class turbine gives alot of flying time. I bet you won't go thru 7 qts a year living in Mn!

I know I can't afford cheap!

I have always said if you can afford turbines you cant afford to be cheap. I would never risk burning up 5k+ worth of airplane over 170 bucks of oil. I should not have said buku bucks but rather I do not want to order it if I dont have too.

For me its not about going the cheap route but going the extremely convienient route. Grab and go vs order and wait is why I ask.

The 2 makers of the 23699 at the hangar happen to be shell and mobil but they are just specificlly canned for the government. I think its just as easy for me to call and fine out if I would void anything by going this route.

thanks all,

Harry

Harry, the green cans of turbine oil (23699) that the military use are just fine. We haved used it in just about every make of turbine with zero issues for a few years now. We lost our "supplier" recently [], so we have since gone back to BP 2380 (the only thing we can get locally).

If you can get it, it will work just the same. If I could still get it, I'd still be using it.

I've been using AMSOIL for several years. I use the saber Professional, 100 to 1 Pre-mix . same mix as the turbine oil. One qt to 4.75 gal.!
I have used it in 2 P80's, a P120 and a Titan. It has nothing to do with the cost as it is almost as much as regular turbine oils ! I don't like the exposure to the turbine oil. It is not designed to be burned. It is purely a lubricant!

One of the 80's has been back to JetCat for the required maintenance and they didn't notice anything different about it at all. I'm not saying change to this, just giving information about something that has worked for me. I will continue to use the Amsoil ! Any good 2 cycle oil will work just as well!

Default RE: question about oil (23699)?

I plan on going with a 23699 but basicly what I am getting from here and reading on the forums is that people are having no problems with the high quality 2 cycle synthetic and any of the other oils that meet the 23699 mil spec.

I am not endorsing using anything other than what the MFG says or be cheap but it seems like there are ALOT more safe and reliable options out there than what people believe. Because I am new to this I am finding that some of this stuff is a pain in the rear to get locally. I am the type of R/Cer who wants to be able to walk into a store and buy what I need instead of having to buy online or in bulk that takes up space in my already over crowded house.

Thanks all it really helps.

Harry
