RE: FeiBao F-9-F Panther
Hi Guys.
I must say that Wagner is awesome to deal with and does indeed listen to our feedback in regards to his products. For example: I was concerned with the fuel tank stopper location as it relates to clunk movement..the location has changed for my kit. I was also concerned with fuel capacity. My kit came with two saddle tanks in addition to the main tank. Now that was fast response!! Great Customer Service. Fei Bao and Wagner....I'll be back.

Hi Guys.
Well I have been working on the Panther and here is where I am at:
I started with the tail section. Here I am dry fitting the elevators to the stabs. This required some small wooden blocks to ensure the right spacing between the elevator and stab. The counter balance on the elevator required some minor trimming to provide the right gap and ensure smooth operation with no binding. After sanding I brushed on some yellow paint to finish up.

Next I mounted the elevator servos using the provided mounts. There is a neat plywood structure in the stab that is ready to accept the servo mounts. Next I installed the fiberglass control horn and cover. I painted the control horn yellow.

The stab and fin were designed to be a bolt on afair but the instructions have you glue it together as well. This is what I did for added security. My fuse saddle required some trimming for a tight fit of the fin and stab. The rudder servo was shoe horned in place. The size of the opening is actually smaller than the servo but I was able to get it in working the angles. The rudder linkage is shown as well. I am using Futaba 3050 digital servos (90 oz @ 6V) on the elevators, rudder and ailerons. Flap servos are Hitec 645MG.

I have completed one wing panel. The aileron servo mounts the same way as the elevator and rudder servos. The flap servo mounts directly to a rib inside the wing. I had to enlarge the opening in the wing root to get the servo in. There is no hatch needed for the flap servo so I cut a slot into the wing skin for the servo arm. I did some trimming to the TE of the wing skins to get smooth movement from the flap and aileron. The wing tank bolts in place. The tanks have two aluminum dowels glue in them that slide into the wing and are held in place with bolts. The aluminum is drilled and tapped for the bolts from the factory.
Now off to the other wing!!

While I'm waiting for my bell mouth (Tam came to the rescue) I decided to work on the cockpit. It is nice to complete this early since it will have an impact on C.G. and equipment placement. The cockpit will not be true to scale but rather fun scale. Still quite convincing nonetheless. I will be using a Hangar 9 1/5 scale jet pilot which fits the cockpit perfectly. The 1/6 scale pilot is shown for reference and is clearly too small in my opinion. Instruments came from Hobby Lobby and the instrument panel , ejection seat and various knobs will be made from the plastic materials shown. These are great cause you can recreate the look of ejection seat rails and knobs with the different types and sizes / shapes of material offered. Switches will be made from aluminum tubing (thanks for the tip Terry Holston). Also pictured is an example of how the instruments look when complete. This is the Cockpit tub from my T-45. I cut to size and wet sanded the glare shield prior to spraying it flat black. I did not care for the factory finish on the cockpit parts. I tack glued it in place with ca then feathered in a "weld" of goop to permanently hold it in place.

Dom,
That Panther deserves a much better looking pilot than that one! How about this 1/5th scale guy. Incredibly detailed and realistic looking:

How about this guy, right size, good looking and a servo connected to the nose wheel, making his head turn as the plane taxies..

How goes it Dom!
I too have been working on the Panther and was wondering what you are going to do with gear and door sequencing? I bought a UP3 valve and although it works great, the main gear doors stay down with the main gear down. I do not believe that is scale. The main doors should go up after the gear are down. Also I'm afraid I might wipe them out during a grass landing or something, and believe me you DO NOT want to replace a broken door hinge. (ask me how I know). I was thinking a MH valve controller but then I would need at least 3 valves and servos. Anyway I have the wing and tail servos in their postions,(still need the control horns installed) the fuel tanks figured out and installed, the inlet relieved so that the P120 fits nice, the gluing surface on the empanage all sanded (WHAT A PAIN), the air lines all rigged up (by the way I replaced the airlines with HD stuff from DreamworksRC) and I am doing a double decker platform arrangement of the turbine and RC equipment.
Also what pilot did you decide on?

Gary,
The inner main gear doors should open and close with each movement of the mian gear and be closed when they are deployed. In former Panthers I used the same principal that has been described elsewhere here in the forums ( I think by Terry). I used a clippard valve on the front gear doors and hook them into the airlines for the retracts. The clippard valve is on the retracting line and will not let the doors close unless the gear is up. The main gear doors are on a separate circuit and vlave, actuated with a MiniHobby gear door cycler. The outer main gear doors I attached to the struts with either a clevis or elastic cord. They go with the gear. Using this method you only need two valves (standard valves) and one gear door cycler.

Hi Guys.
The cockpit is almost done. Pilot is 1/5 scale Hangar 9 Jet Pilot. I am using a UP-2 valve to get the proper sequencing. The clippard valve on the nose gear doors will keep those open as described above. One valve will do everything correctly with the addition of the clippard up front.
More later,
Dom
