ENGLISH ELECTRIC LIGHTNING ( Airworld's )
I'm looking for some feedback on Airworld's Electric Lightning as I'm ready to dive in this rare bird. Is anyone on planet Earth flying one that can share some info on this Jet? Airworld's USA nor Germany have much on this Jet aside from dimensions and a few pictures of the one that was lost.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mate
I doubt very much you will get any info on anyone actually flying one.
I ordered two kits the day they were released in Jet Power two years go. According to Airworld my first kit arrives next week. I will be happy to takes some pics when I start to unpack it for you Johnny?
The idea is that this one will go to uber perfectionist builder Marc S ( The guy that did the super neat Mig 15 Build thread of mine on here) so he can work his magic.
I gave my painter a dummy run on the scheme by getting him to play with an old Mick Reeves model that I had kicking about, and I think I will go with this scheme on the airworld one. What do you Think? Hopefully if he can bring a flat sided plain detailed model like this Lightning in such a manner imagine what he can do with all the surface prep on that Airworld beauty.
Regards Al

Thanks Ali,
I sent you an email regarding the kit, I figured that this wasn't around as much and if anyone knew anything about it would be you. I'm getting it as well and I will hand it over to the same builder that did my Mig 21, he's very creative and loves complicated different stuff. I'm not in love with that scheme you're showing there bud There's so many good schemes for this bird.... I'm almost sold on a White and Black one that looks like it's been through major battle

Hi Ali,
I think the colour scheme looks great, and since it would be RSAF FMk 53, you could hang overwing tanks (overburgers) and Matra missile pods on it. What are you planning on powering it with?
It will be interesting to see if your kit does arrive next week and how complete it is. Hans told me that it would be early in the new year before the gear would be ready.
Regards,
John

Ahhhh John. Overwing tanks!!!!!![:'(]
I was planning on powering it with a Jet Cat P200
I will keep you updated as soon as it arrives. But now you come to mention it I do remember an email from Hans of Airworld saying that the gear would follow after the model arrives. This is no issue for me as I can get Marc moving on the build without the gear.

That is a great colour scheme with great flag. But whatch out if you are intending to use it for a competition.

Thanks Vinny - the Lightening is aeroplane #1 in my book. Massively excited about seeing one of these get in the air. I've not looked into the specs of the kit but really hoping it's a full blown twin turbine version. It has to be able to take off as scale and pull vertical!

ONE P200?[:'(] Pah! That's a pathetic attempt to properly power a Lightning. Now two P 200's....
I read a report of a race, similar to that seen on Top Gear recently between a high performance car and a Typhoon, but between a high performance racing bike of the day and a Lightning. From a standing start the racing bike easily had the edge on the Lightning, up to 60MPH.
But after that, the Lightning was at five thousand feet before before the racing bike got to it's top speed......[8D]
If you can't put the tail of this thing in a milk bottle and launch straight up like it's November the 5th, then you ain't got enough power!

Hi Dave
Yep. It's English and it's electric.
Regrettably only a tiddler at 26in span and 600W input with a DS30 fan, Kontronik FUN480/42 and 3S lipos (soon to be 4S A123s). After a fair amount of experimentation with CG and washout its flying qualities are sufficiently encouraging nowadays for a bigger one to be on the cards for around 3.5-4kW in put, say about 4ft span.
My Lightning first flew in April 2005 and for the next 16 months was reluctant to turn at low speed as if suffering from a massive adverse yaw effect, and also it had a tendency to snap-roll into a banked turn when it felt like it, which often made turning finals a bit hairy. I fitted a rudder to help in the slow-speed turns, and as a by-product of that discovered that it would do a very nice almost axial roll on rudder alone, just like the old single-channel rudder-only aerobats I flew in the 1960s.
Matt Halton posted a video of it on Youtube, flying in high winds and demonstrating all sorts of wilful behaviour like tumbling end-over-end, uncommanded snap-rolls, incipient snaps whilst in a left-hand bank - a bit of a nightmare though the landing was one of the best I’d ever done with it.

Some stills taken from the video show it with its complement of Firestreaks fitted a few weeks before the video was shot and which, incidentally, didn’t affect the handling (such as it was!) at all.

That vid was shot was in August last year and I was almost ready to give up on the plane by then. As a last-ditch attempt to make it behave itself I decided to cut open the wing and re-jig the tip section to 5deg washout. And that totally transformed the handling. It really is nice to fly now, which is why I feel confident about making a bigger version for more power (and associated bigger financial input).
I sure wish you guys all success with your fabulous Airworld Lightnings, and if you get bored you can always try the end-over-end tumbles and rudder-only rolls. Regarding the tumbling, that’s caused by a high thrustline and low forward speed so that the thrust moment at full power is sufficient to bunt the plane erect from inverted. It frequently occurs if I try for too big a loop, with the result that the plane slows right down whilst approaching inverted at the top and then boosts itself upright. That is, of course, provided the dihedral effect of all that sweepback doesn’t get there first and roll the plane erect instead! No gyros in this model of course
Enjoy!!
Gordon.
