RE: PST F-84G Build Thread
After making some changes, I have the speedbrake working near perfect. The horizontal stabs are mounted and I have started on the nose gear setup. The fuselage skin was a little too flimsy for my liking so I broke out the carbon fiber and borrowed my daughters favorite scissors to cut 1 1/2" wide strips to reinforce the gear opening. After the epoxy gels up, I will come back and clean up the excess a little and start mounting the doors and nose gear. Until then, I am going to start sketching ideas out on paper to figure out the sliding canopy!!!

Nose gear and door install is complete. I somehow managed to nail the door horns and cylinder mounts the first time without having to modify them??? Anyway here it is! Pressing on with the canopy and then onto scale blow in doors!!!!!!

Lookin good Chris.
My approach is a bit different. I decided to do the install/setup and fly it and then focus on the scale features and flite metal covering.
Thanks for blazing the trail.

RE: PST F-84G Build Thread
Well, after countless hours in CAD, sleepless nights and a couple cases of beer, I have the canopy rolling in its tracks!!!! WOW what a pain in the butt!!! I am down to building the drive mechanism, 1735 RPM will give me a 5 second transit time that should look about right, I hope! I still have a lot of work to do but the concept is nailed down enough to make something that I will be satisfied with. I am going to try to take a couple days off so my brain can rest a little. Until next time!!!

Chris,
I'm almost ready to maiden. I wanted to cover the ailerons, flaps and elevator surfaces with flite metal before hinging but I'm still waiting for the material to arrive[>:]. As soon as it comes, I'll have this puppy in the air. Hopefully by the end of the month.
The canopy project looks GREAT!

Chris,
Were you having a conversation with yourself ("This sucks", "You know u love it!") on the side pannel? LOL! I think you should paint the jet like a "Bud Light" can.
Question: Is the canopy framework going to be able to clear the main fuel tank? The tank rides above the cockpit rim and former.

RE: PST F-84G Build Thread
Steve, I wrote the "this sucks" at about the 8 hour mark of work, was really early in the morning! The mother in law wrote the "You know you love it" which is true for the most part! I will be cutting the top of the fuel tank out to make a channel that allows everything to function. When everything is good, I will lay up the glasswork to close the tank back up. I may be adding some aux fuel tanks to compensate for what I take out of the upper tank. The functional blow in doors will(should) be the last difficult thing to figure out then I can get this puppy rigged up and painted!

RE: PST F-84G Build Thread
Canopy update! I managed to get in the shop tonight and make some progress on the canopy. I had to rip out the rear track and redo it so the back of the frame would not hit the fuselage. Once I had that figured out, I fired up the lathe and made the nut to drive the canopy on the lead screw. Once I get the motor, belt reduction and limit switches all wired up we should be good to go!

Thanks for the kind words Steve, the canopy and speedbrake were a pain in the backside but worth the effort! I should have the canopy running on a motor in the next couple days. There are a couple things that I have to fight with but I think I can beat them, I hope!!!

6 years if you count the all the beer that I drank!!! I have the motor setup in my head, just got to get it into CAD and machine some parts. The only hurdle is getting the allthread straight enough to keep the canopy from shaking. I will have it heat treated to make it stiffer once it is running smooth.

I finally got tired of trying to hold the canopy assembly wile working on it so I made up a maintenance/storage stand for it! Now progress can continue without things getting hurled across the shop!!!

I hate scroll saws now, the laser has spoiled me! I an Emmission Technologies machine, it was about 15K when I built it a couple years ago, his systems have become very advanced since I purchased mine. There should be some good stuff up on the thread here in a while, I am actually making forward progress now that I can use both hands to build! I have been machining and laser cutting for a couple hours now, stay tuned, it is going to get good!!!

Here is a little teaser of things to come. This is the rear bearing carrier that the drive shaft runs through. Back to work!!!
