Thanks guys!
I have another idea that's been lying around for a while which would produce another effect
that would be equally cool!
A bit more engineering, but I'll get there!

RE: Afterburner effect!
this is nothing new,, the concept has been around EDF for over 4 years
a guy had LEDs inside the tail pipe of his WATTAGE F86 if you looked at one it has big cheater hole on the bottom,,
it had rained for a little while ,,when he took off from the runway
he notice the exhaust was lightning up just like AFTERBURNER effect
as he kept flying the drops that had splash from the gears kept going into the cheater hole
later he put an eye drop bottle with a vent dripping in to the front of the fan
I guess this the first time done on a turbine,, the AFTERBURNERS LEDs have being around for a while on electrics edf
I believe it was RCgoups will do a search
LOOKS GOOD

Tor.
Your afterburner worked much better than we could have hoped for! The effect in real life was at least as impressive as in the pics.
Can't wait to see it fly[8D]
Tor: You are one creative ba****** Hats off!!

RE: Afterburner effect!
Thanks, Ståle!!
Maybe if I work hard and you take some time to program the Weatronic with me, we can fly it this Saturday!
(But only if the temp is above freezing, or the effect may freeze!!)

RE: Afterburner effect!
Thanks again, guys -
I must admit I was very happy when I saw the effect!
I have contacted a couple of companies about the possibility of producing it
in different sizes and as a complete package - check this space for updates!

RE: Afterburner effect!
Most of the equipment is onboard now - we just have to cross our fingers for a good day
on Saturday!
These days, we have about 4-5 hours of daylight, and the forecast for Saturday so far is
2 degrees below freezing, light wind and sunny..!
Sunrise is 9:15 am, sunset 3 pm, and you can't really fly the first or last 45 minutes..
except for testing light effects!

RE: Afterburner effect!
We're all drooling to see one of your newest videos/in-flight pics with this... !
I have this AB ring too on my L-39, but the effect is not fully the same, your viewing angle for the light is unbelievable and VERY intense, even more because it is installed inside the tailcone of the F-16.
Your pics were taken with a running turbine, right ? Didn't I see you holding a bottle of Norvegian liquor on the first photo ??? Is it that cold there now ??

RE: Afterburner effect!
Nicolas -
it's below freezing - so we have to drink anti-freeze liquids!!
Yes, the turbine is indeed running, which (hopefully) means that the effect
will look the same while airborne!!
I hope to fly on Saturday, and there will be plenty of cameras, both still and video - and then we will
see... I'm very excited about this! BTW: The bottle was only Norwegian drinking water![:'(]

RE: Afterburner effect!
Just a quick question...
Where is the water injected in this system? Is it at the start of the pipe like a normal smoke system or is the water injected at the exhaust by the afterburner lights? I was just wondering whether this set up would also be easy to use with a bifurcated set up.
I understand if you dont want to answer to keep your very good idea a secret and probably earn yourself some money!

RE: Afterburner effect!
There will definitely be a solution for bifurcated pipes - but like you say, maybe it will be for sale soon.... at a reasonable price!

Look at the pictures. Self explanatory. (ie, after the light ring)
16 x 0.1mm holes drilled in 1/16" o/d brass pipe formed in a ring connected to a pump. Connected to a water tank. Simple and effective.
