I built one a couple of years ago.(Ziroli) Fiberglas fuse, with built up everything else. I covered the wings and stabs with carbon fibervail under 1/2 oz glass cloth. I applied both at the same time so I could squeegee the excess wpoxy away with out messing up the CF vail. The wings could have been used as a Machetti. Verry strong, yet very light. Almost as light as my PST Panther wings. I know they were stronger. (Don't ask) Pictures of the Ziroli on my web site. Google my name, if interested.............+

First picture is the Ziroli at Michigan Jets. The second is the PST at Kentucky Jets last year. Both weigh about 25 lbs dry.

Hi Dennis,
Everyone notice on my tidy workshop!!!! Man - you should see it right now! I have just done - like all decent housewives do - before the guests arrive - I did a major clean-up - before every photo session - believe it or not!

Hi Terry,
I have considered the colour scheme you´ve got on your Panthers - but I changed my mind after seeing too many of this scheme, so I have decided for the grey/black fuse and yellow wings with red stripes. Highly visible.
The one I have enclosed here is a FeiBao - but colour of the fuse is completely wrong.
I´ll cover my wings with 49grams/sqmeter glasscloth. Since I used a thicker balsa (3mm) for covering the wings, they are strong but still light.

The photos here are showing the tanks and the formers which hold them in place. On top I have made shelves on two rails of aluminum. One for the switch for the PowerBox. The other will serve the switch for the turbine. Up front - another shelf. Here I intend to place the PowerBox and the electronic valves for landing gear and gear doors. Three air bottles will supply gear doors, brakes and retracts with air.

The gear doors? I have given this question some thoughts! Should I keep it simple and just let the gear retract into open wheel wells? Or should I construct working gear doors? And if yes, how? To make a long story short - I actually made three different set-ups - I eventually chose to use air rams. Air out and spring in. With the rams from the airbrake of a HotSpot, with a 7,5cm stroke I succeeded in making a very reliable system.
But first I had to open up a bit more to let the wheels go in. Then I had to make a set of gear doors. See photos. Light ply/0,8mmplywood hinged with Kavan pin hinges. The door following the gear leg was attatched to the leg with a rubberband and had a small spacer to keep it in the right position.

Unfortunately I discovered that my Robart retracts were leaking air! [:@] I´m still waiting for the noseretract unit to be returned from Ziroli. (Last news: It has been shipped). The mains I sent to one of our local vizards, who fixed them in less than one week.
On the photos you see one of the gearleg doors, the spacer and the small carbon ring for the rubber band. And the air ram in the out position.

Here comes a couple of photos of the modeler himself! I think it´s a good idea to enclose a photo of yourself. It makes the thread more personal...?[:'(] Shot at the Jet Camp Holstebro, Denmark -summer of 2007, and one from Laxå, Sweden-September 2007. Taxiing with my boomer XL

Hello Peter.

Nice to meet you here the world is small perhaps the hair style has something to do with scandinavian weather.
I have said it before but it is a very nice projekt you have with the Panther.

Best Regards

Hi Henrik,

Sure is a small world. Yep - the Scandinavian weather has inspired this ultra short hair cut - no sun in the eyes when flying jets
The Panther is coming along - soon it´s time for glassing.

Hello Ronnie,

Glad that my thread can help. I haven´t got any interesting updates right now. I´m in the proccess of gluing the wingtanks on. Not a lot of fun. I have been using a lot of time on my geardoors, and they are working fine now. Had a problem with leaking aircylinders on all three retracts. That´s fixed now. Checked the system yesterday and it works fine as well.
In fact I just need to do some final sanding and glass the whole airframe, that´s how far I am now. Most of the interior systems are in place and I´ll return again, when I´ve got something to show!
Good luck with the construction - you are always welcome to ask, if you´ve got questions!

Peter,

Great build, you have inspired me to dig out my ziroli panther plans and wood kit that I brought years ago and never got around to starting, I even see on Ebay I guy selling the wood kits for those who have the plans only, but I don't know how well they are cut, so you maybe safer going to an approved cutter (see ziroli's site) and obtaining one.

Excellent work Peter, will you be adding a flightmetal or similar covering?

keep us posted.

Hi GW,
Originally I set out to build what was going to be a "first Jet"! However I discovered that it was a far more time consuming job than I had expected. So I had several pauses from when I started more than 3 years ago and bought some Chinese ARF´s in between, so I could start flying Jets, before passing away!!!
My intentions have never been to create a super scale model, - no panel lines etc, so after glassing and primer it will just be painted in the: Dark grey, yellow and red colour scheme, showing somewhere in my thread.
I´ll keep you posted on any progress - I wasn´t on R/C Universe when I started and thus had no inputs and encouragements from jet colleagues world wide, so I know the value of these feed backs!

This photo series show the proccess of producing the nose gear door.
Starting with a block of blue foam. Cutting it to suit inside the wheels well. Next you cut and sand it to follow the outside contours of fuselage. 5 layers of fiberglass and resin. The outside layers were 20grams/sqm cloth and the 3 inner layers 80 gr/sqm. After curing it was an easy job to remove the foam. The last rests were removed with acetone. As you can tell from the shape, the doors are not scale. Three pin hinges of Kavan type were used on each side. These doors will be activated mechanically using the gearleg and a 0,5mm pianowire fixated to each door half with a small horn. More on that later.

Interesting that you used blue foam to make the mold for the doors. Normally I just monokote over the balsa and put the glass right over it. Works perfectly every time. I'm enjoying your build. The Panther is one of my favorite jets.

These two photos show how the hinges have been glued onto the doors with medium cyano. Later to be secured with a piece of glass cloth.
I have cut out in the fuselage for the hinges. Next they´ll be glued in with cyano, a thin layer of balsa on top, and finally covered with glass and resin.

The wing tanks are made of thin ABS plast, and require quite some accuracy! Three balsa formers help guiding and alligning the two halves. The wing spar goes all out into the wingtank and makes it a lot more rigid than on earlier models.
I glued everything with medium cyano. A ribbon of thin glass cloth was glued all around the tank where the two halves met to keep them together. A final layer of fiberglass will make the tanks very solid, but before glassing some filler and sanding is neccessary.
